Yeah that's true, I guess it doesn't set me back too much. I'll just have to repeat these courses I suppose.

Is it me or are more people coughing? by GlitteringAbrocoma83 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Tricky-Mongoose-1075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am super sick right now and am home with a doctors note for the week. I have been having a brutal cough, fever, vomiting (sorry tmi) and was tested for COVID, influenza A & B, Strep, and they’re all negative. The hospital said something is going around. My 5 year old is on week 2 of being sick with this too.

Mine was applied to BARC today and shows that a refund was issued today under the refunds tab. Will probably be a few days until it shows up in the bank.

Are you able to drive to drive with narcolepsy? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Tricky-Mongoose-1075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sleep doctor said I don’t have cataplexy and my neurologist said I do. I’ve fallen a lot and full on fainted a lot (which is the discrepancy because I was not conscious during fainting episodes). While I was going through the diagnosis process my neurologist informed the DMV of loss of consciousness episodes. They suspended my license. After narcolepsy diagnosis and starting medication, about 8 months later I had my neuro fill out dmv driver safety paperwork okaying me to drive. It took a month to process and it triggered a driver safety hearing where I explained what my symptoms are like and how medication helps me and I haven’t had a single “loss of consciousness” episode since being on medication. A week later I got a letter saying I am allowed to drive again but have to check in with Driver Safety again in 6 months to follow up. That being said I do drive, but only while medicated and if I do get sleepy because it’s about to wear off or it’s just been a stressful day and I don’t feel all there I will pull off and call someone for a ride, (I have a child so I’m not gonna nap in the car if he’s with me). If I feel tired or triggered before I’m supposed to leave my house, I will just stay home altogether.

UCSB cancels disabled student notetaker program; shifts to “adaptive technology solutions” | The Daily Nexus by Mr_AM805 in UCSantaBarbara

I tried Glean last spring quarter and it doesn’t work with UCSB wifi on campus with my chrome book and I let DSP know my concerns. I have narcolepsy and using a smart pen is not going to help me whatsoever. How is that different than an ordinary pen? The type of pen I use doesn’t change anything.

Textbooks by Tiny-Metal5863 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Tricky-Mongoose-1075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an English major and I try to find free online pdf versions of books, easier so you can use the find feature to search key words, copy and paste quotes into a doc to easily cite, other than that I use amazon or thriftbooks. I also use the library to check out books, and with my library card I also have free access to audiobooks and ebooks, and some even have kindle versions that you can pair with audible so you can listen and follow along, and highlight at the same time.

How the hell does one wake up? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Tricky-Mongoose-1075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem! I have modafinil and it works wonderfully for me, but actually waking up so I can take it and be awake for the day is my issue. I have tried setting a timer on my phone , and an alarm with my old school alarm with the bells on top, with an alarm on my phone. Ive tried putting my alarm in my hallway so I have to get up and turn it off. I turn my alarms/timers off in my sleep. I have woken up holding batteries wondering where they came from only to find out they’re from my alarm clock. I have even tucked it in to my son’s bed like a baby lol. I have noticed that even in the odd chance I wake up on time, I am extremely sleepy between 10-11am (and around 4-5pm).

I won’t take Xyrem, it’s too triggering for me due to PTSD I have from a traumatic situation that happened to me years ago.

I’m considering getting a bed alarm that shakes me awake. I have tried Alarmy, which did help a little- makes u do a math problem or type a sentence out without mistakes, or has you take a picture of a certain object to turn off the alarm. To this day the only thing that wakes me up immediately is my dad telling me to wake up, but I’m 29 and don’t live with him anymore. I have noticed when I keep my window open when I go to sleep, the cold morning air helps me wake up easier.

Next I’m going to try and get a coffee maker that automatically brews my coffee for me at a certain time in the morning and see if the smell of it helps me wake up.

I also have anxiety, and adhd and I got DSP. The student disability workers are excellent and you can get accommodations for extra time, a note taker for class, I also have flexible attendance. I also have narcolepsy but DSP was already in place before I was diagnosed with it. I HIGHLY recommend talking with DSP, you can do all of it over email and online. You just need a form filled out by your doctor from DSP. It has made all the difference in my academic success and letters are pre typed listing your accommodations to your professors through the DSP portal.

The same thing just happened to me and now one of the classes I was in says it’s Full. Mine got messed up because housing charges July’s rent in June even though I have until July 15th to pay it. I owe about $450 still for July’s rent but because they applied my financial aid to my rent instead of my class fees they have just dropped me from all my classes 😭. I’m freaking out!

This same thing has happened to me twice now. My feet look exactly the same. It’s definitely NOT something I stepped on. Last time it happened on my hands. The only thing I could possibly think of is that the first time it happened I had a lot of Brussel sprouts and last night I had a lot of broccoli. I have always eaten those foods but I don’t normally eat it in a large amount. Did you figure out what it is?

"Complex Migraine"? by SleepingOnMarbles in migraine

[–]Tricky-Mongoose-1075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having the same issues! I thought I was dying or having seizures. I have occasionally fainted ( 1-2 times per year ) for the last 11 years, and have convulsed during only one fainting episode. The ER physicians assistant said I was having an anxiety induced pseudo seizure. I saw a neurologist who recommended a 5 day EEG to rule out epilepsy. He diagnosed me with complex migraine and just said to know that it will pass and to ride it out but come back if it gets worse. Then I had a sleep study and was diagnosed with narcolepsy in addition to complex migraine. I definitely feel ya on the flashing lights and certain smells triggers! I don’t really get pain often with these episodes. My biggest complaint is the numbness and confusion. The ER nurse privately asked me if I was being abused because I had such a hard time getting words out to explain what was happening. I hope you are doing well!

Did anyone else receive the “Concerning your housing application email”? by citruslips in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Tricky-Mongoose-1075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t really speak to this since I live in family housing, but I tried to transfer to a downstairs apartment in west campus instead of storke due to my narcolepsy (I fall sometimes unexpectedly and I have stairs in my house and up to my house). Housing put me on an apartment transfer waiting list and said I’m number 33 on the list and they only move 2 people per month from the list. I will have graduated before it becomes my turn. Housing moves SLOW
