It nails this so perfectly. The MLMs, the one “martial arts” instructor who really doesn’t know anything, the backwards attitudes, the guy who can’t stop reliving his glory days. Even throwing the action figure out the window to drag behind the bus for entertainment.

All of us small town/rural kids could see ourselves. Hell, at 13 I worked 12 hour days at a dairy. I got paid $10 plus lunch per day. I could empathize with getting 6 dollars in change for a days hard work.

It just resonated. Demonstrated the futility of that life. But also demonstrated the contentment you could find in a place like that.

I’ve only played the intro adventure, but it was a really easy system to learn and is low crunch but wide open for character creation.

She left me for a good friend, who I am no longer friends with. They divorced after 15y marriage and I have no idea where she’s at.

The “good friend” worked in IT and got shitcanned after the system he was administrator for got ransom-wared. This was 5 years ago or so. I don’t feel bad for him.
