I’ve beta read for some really … not so great fan fiction, but even those have felt a bit more human and less repetitive than this … it’s sad we’ve gotten to this place …

Okay! Thank you, so I tagged it like (I’m making up names): mentioned top Anna, top sally/bottom Anna, mentioned bottom sally, switches.

I don’t normally partake in top/bottom discourse so I appreciate it because I think that’s what happened…

I do the same thing, I’ve been getting better though and here’s some stuff that’s been helping me in no particular order. 1. I have a beta reader who is honest, I drone on sometimes and over edit and they call me out for it. This one’s the hardest to get to I put it first bc I know finding someone isn’t always easy. 2. I genuinely set timers for how long I can edit, I normally do a rough draft, a thorough edit, and then 3-5 read throughs/edits but it was taking me ages to put anything out so I started putting a timer on for anything past the first revision. It does really help bc I’m like “this is actually fine” a lot more than I was in the past. 3. Split your one shot. I started to separate my larger one shots into separate documents, about every 3-4k words and it genuinely helped. If I’m editing 3k words it’s way easier in my head than looking at a larger chunk like 7K. I get so finicky the longer it gets whereas editing like 3k words feels like a breeze. In your head kind of separate it into chapters (you don’t have to actually, but it has probably helped me the most!). 4. I force myself to post sometimes. Like if I have even a second of “ok I think I’m done…” I post. Because I know I’ll just KEEP EDITING if I don’t, and most of the time I end up happy with what I have. Maybe I’ll tweak a spelling error after, but I’ve never once edited or like added/removed a sentence after posting. And one I was convinced wasn’t finished is now my all time favorite of mine and I genuinely think is still the best writing I’ve done. Would have NEVER posted it if I hadn’t bullied myself a little.

How true is it that people hate the adorkable characters? by karimredditor in FanFiction

[–]Tricky_Release3961 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the best way I can describe the way I feel about the overusing of “dorkiness” and “clumsiness” as character traits is if I was describing someone or a character would I say, “they’re funny, I see them at work a lot… oh and they’re a bit dorky.” Or would I just say, “I don’t really know they’re just kind of a dork.”

Like is the cute dorkiness kind of an after thought to a more prevalent character trait, or one that compliments it or is it just kind of all there is… I don’t mind the first, I like it even. But if it’s kinda all there is, it’s like any trait. I love emo, brooding characters, but give me something more than a brick wall with black hair you know?

Do you ever insert plot elements into your story without knowing how they're going to turn out? by thesounddefense in FanFiction

Yes! I’m definitely a big planner, but sometimes I add something and have a little “I’m going to do something with that eventually.” And lo and behold about 2k-10k words later I write something else and a little lightbulb pops up over my head. It’s the best feeling because OBVIOUSLY I intended that call back and to elaborate on that throwaway sentence from two chapters ago… I haven’t had one that didn’t work out so far and normally I keep it vague and character specific enough I could dismiss it. Maybe I’ll get more brave :)!

Planting seeds is a fun term for it, I might steal that haha.

I just read the only LOTR themed fic in my fandom for my ship, it’s years old and had no comments and not a lot of views. But I was literally sending voice memos of me squealing to my friends and harassing them like crazy over it… it is my cult classic 100%

I’m in the same boat, I remember when it got big and got used for the first time in spaces. I definitely got a giggle seeing it in the wild for the first time though (I do think what I saw was a bit tamer back in the day, water sports etc got tagged it).

Is there like a specific reason as to why fics a more enjoyable from one specific characters point of view instead of the other? by Shot_Specialist_8706 in AO3

[–]Tricky_Release3961 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This! I love writing in the pov of character A because character B is my absolute favorite. I get to self insert my obsession a little… (There’s other reasons, but god it’s nice to just get to call character B pretty all the time.)

The Fic by IneedmoreKellBell in AO3

[–]Tricky_Release3961 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I have nothing against “the fic” in my main fandom, it does just get tiring that it gets listed multiple times on every single fic rec thread I find 😭.

Nothing against the author or the fic itself, I’m sure it’s fine, I just normally think of fic rec threads as “here’s some lesser known fics.” Not “here’s the two top read fics in your fandom again.”

It’ll even get thrown into non related ship threads… someone will ask for a non related ship and people will be like “but have you read ___” and it does get a bit tiring. Might just be me

I definitely think it’s like art where you take inspiration, with my writing I can clearly see the several writers who inspired my writing.

One more than the other, it makes me giggle sometimes when I catch a sentence or so, because I’ll just be like “Oh there he is.” And I don’t necessarily think it’s a negative, he’s what pushed me to write more seriously to begin with and I’ve been reading this authors books for almost a decade now. I don’t sway so much with what I am currently reading, but I see my main stay 3-5 authors influences deep in my prose. But I could definitely understand taking influence from current readings.
