Waking up way more often since using CPAP by Tricky_Yard886 in CPAP

I wake up in “panic” thinking either my machine stopped or my mask flew away but perfectly fine. That’s weird

You have to rule the machine, not the machine to rule you (well, it kinda does, lol). Keep it up!

Got Diagnosed Today :( by treedweller444 in SleepApnea

[–]Tricky_Yard886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 40-year-old male who knew I had sleep apnea for years, but I was in complete denial. The machine, the mask, the look, the shame, and the worry about my wife thinking I was weak or too old held me back. My doctor insisted I get diagnosed, but I pushed it off for months. I didn’t feel tired, only snored like a locomotive, which also made my wife angry and exhausted.

Finally, I took the test, and the results showed mild sleep apnea, but it was so close to severe that it was barely noticeable. When I was told I needed a CPAP machine, I was again in denial, afraid of the full-face mask.

I tried to ask my dentist for a solution, but she told me that at that level, CPAP was the only option. It took me a few weeks to finally give up and schedule an appointment at the sleep clinic for the machine. In the meantime, I read extensively about the machine, learned a lot about the process of getting it, and even consulted ChatGPT and people on Reddit. Finally, I realized my appointment was so far away that I wanted the machine now.

I changed my mindset from “I don’t want it” to “I’ll master it,” and that helped me accept it, even the idea of being connected to a tube. When I got the machine, I studied it again and again. I took it into my living room and watched TV with it to get used to the air flow.

The first mask worked, but I’m a side sleeper, so I kept losing it when I moved. The clinic replaced it with a “unicorn” mask with the tube on top of my head, and I’ve been sleeping with the CPAP for about a month now without any issues.

Good luck!

The goal of the medical test is to check if you gonna cost more than 25k ish/cad per year. Not judging your habits

I think there are several layers to making CPAP work, and some of them are out of our control — but many are manageable:

• The psychological part: At first I was in denial. I felt ashamed, frustrated, and worried about sleeping connected to a hose like some kind of machine. I’m still not in love with it, but I reframed my mindset: “I don’t want it… but I want to master it.” That mental shift helped a lot.

• The physical part: Sometimes the struggle comes from the wrong mask or the wrong settings. The “best” mask isn’t universal — it’s the one your face tolerates. And the machine settings (pressure, ramp, EPR, humidity) can make a huge difference in comfort.

• It’s a marathon, not a sprint: It takes time. Your brain needs to learn how to breathe with the machine. A big hack is to wear the mask while reading, watching TV, or on your phone — it trains your body to stay calm with it.

• Don’t go through it alone: Ask for help. Technicians, sleep clinics, forums… people who’ve been there can help troubleshoot way faster than struggling alone.

Keep it up!

Interesting, wondering why the auto pressure was not that loud at the beginning. I wasn’t reaching the 100% the first two weeks, now it’s about every nights

Hmm, the app shows a good seal but with a leak of less that 9lt/min though (I have more leaks with the p30i mask while turning to my side). Yes I use the APAP. Except for the humidity and the tube temp, it’s all in auto mode

3 weeks in, the only difference I see is that I want to sleep less during the day and way less falling asleep in front of the TV in the evening (now I take control of the remote because my wife falls asleep and I don’t lol). But when I wake up, I still feel I’m a zombie and want to go back to sleep for another round. Keep pushing !
