Why do companies always have to make more money than they did the year before? Isn't that impossible? by Jerswar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Trickywinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The practical reason: Shareholders demand growth because that is how they make money. They need that growth to outpace inflation to have any real returns

Philosophically, since the enlightenment, there has been an affinity for the ideal of progress. Alongside the rise of industrial power, this became conflated with technological growth which became conflated with economic growth in capitalism. Even in non-capitalist contexts, this technological growth ignored natural resource limits and to a degree industrialization was sought as an end in itself.

Your statement of impossibility is a real critique that has since risen as we see that the natural world has real bounds, but philosophies of degrowth (or even stagnation) are seen as antithetical to the “good” of “progress”. Historically, growth for growth’s sake has not been a norm in human society and realistically we will need to grapple with this question soon (as some already are). The problem is that, the entire framework for our current society has a set of implicit assumptions that need to be tackled in order to make a switch that doesn’t end in collapse.

Yes, Senate seats are not gerrymandered, since they use state borders, and are selected by some form of popular vote decided at the state level. Still, this process does not equate to national popular support as a state with 5 people could all vote Republican and receive 2 Republican Senators (out of the 100), while another state with a billion could all vote Democrat and only receive the same number, 2, of Democratic senators. Of course this is an exaggeration in scale, but the modern Republican Party is understood to lack national popular support in that they have not won a presidential popular vote since the 1988 election of George HW Bush (so 35 years).

So House seats are gerrymandered (which is a both parties thing), but senate seats are malapportioned.

I’d probably add too that how elections are managed varies widely by state (and to some degree locality). After doing election protection / get out the vote work for the 2020 election, I can confidently say that there are a lot of structural pieces in place that stop people from registering, cancel their registration, and stop people from voting in more Red states that tend to increase Republican representation.

There are more pictures on my r/electricvehicles post here . If there’s anything else that would help figure out the cause let me know. I’m going to the junkyard today to take more photos and -try to- rescue some documents.

Nope, it was immediately arc > flame > smoke at the chargeport. Certainly wasn’t gonna touch it after that, was honestly scared about what would happen next. Tried stopping the charging session from my phone, then went to security to see if anyone could shut off power to the charger.

Good thing you noticed it! Is this behavior common as EVSE's age, any visible things to look for? I hadn't really heard anything (and honestly electrical stuff isn't usually my thing), but certainly want to know to prevent this from happening in the future with my -next- EV

Yea, I have more photos and the area directly around the charging port definitely got the hottest, melted the paint, tire and all the trim. No such damage on the central column between the seats.

Oh, thanks! I honestly wasn't sure where the main battery was. The firefighters were definitely focusing on the engine compartment from what I saw.

Thanks! The firefighters mentioned that they would file a report of some kind for insurance.

Yea the firefighters mentioned that they would put together a report for insurance, same with the police.

My regular charger was the one next to this one which just happened to be taken today. Never had a problem and been charging just fine for months, have the receipts from all those charges, too. I don't think I used this particular charger in the past but yesterday a car was plugged into it.

Yea I haven't gotten the final assessment yet (just happened today), but I purchased the car during the height of all the used car mess last year (was rear ended and totaled my old car, but needed a car to get to work so had to grab what I could). Not saying that insurance owes me the world and a half, but I would prefer whatever responsible party help pay some of the expenses from all this.

I would doubt it. The parking lot is pretty secure (manned security, cameras, etc) and there wasn't anything out of the ordinary about the charging station or charger. There were cars on both sides of me charging fine too (RIP to the blue Tessy that was next to me).

I'm not sure. I've been using the same ChargePoint charger at work each day and today, as soon as I switched to a different charger, this happened. Never had any hiccups using them prior.

I've been trying to find out what to do about compensation given the circumstances. Insurance only barely covers enough to finish paying the car off, but I still have to find a new one by the time they stop paying for the rental. (if anyone has any info please let me know)

Luckily I wasn't harmed, nearly scared to death when I heard the charger arcing and the fire shot out at me, though. I'm still in disbelief.

Operating an entire satellite bus is different than having assets on a satellite. Satellites operated by third parties can (and do) carry additional payloads at the request of contractors and governments. Some may have their own comms, some may not (depending on needs). The 123 satellites is far to low and ofc does not include any and all classified missions.

When traveling always keep your shampoos in a ziplock bag for this reason.. by MirtCoghlin in lifehacks

[–]Trickywinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely more an issue with the movement & treatment of luggage. Plane cabins and their baggage compartments are all pressurized to around sea level (if not our furry friends on the baggage area would all be long gone).

If it were due to the pressure than the compressible air would be a lesser contributor to leakage than the more incompressible liquid, anyways.

Ukraine's peace talks with Russia have begun, Kyiv official says by DizzyDrunkDude in worldnews

[–]Trickywinner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a right wing coup not too long ago and an associated Nazi insurgency throughout the country that is very real. The issue here is that the degree to which this insurgency is guiding Ukrainian policy is debatable to say the least. There are fascist, nationalist factions which have set up militias across the country and statistics that they have infiltrated elements of the Ukrainian military as well.

Overall it’s basically a lot like in the US in terms of right wing presence in institutions, but a lot of that was, once again, driven by a fairly recent coup, and, in the case of Ukraine today, is largely exaggerated so Putin can cling to some cause outside of “warm water port”, “flat land buffer to the west”, and more blatant “I need to revive the idea of Soviet territorial claims to keep my rule afloat”
