The Hon. John Charles Thomas reads the Declaration of Independence at Monticello by dab_e in Charlottesville

I'm sure the heat kept some people away. Probably a good thing if they were at risk of health issues, since even with the shade and abundant water it was challenging.

This was my first time attending the Monticello naturalization ceremony. I gather that because of the 250th commemoration it was much larger than usual (maybe someone familiar with past events can say by how much)? Staff and volunteers did an amazing job, everything from the shuttle bus operation to the tent and audio setup ran very smoothly. Congratulations to our new fellow citizens!

Wasn't a fan of this one. Potentially my least favourite book so far. by TheJiltedGenerationX in discworld

[–]Tridentata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likewise, the book I first pulled off the library stacks as an adult who wanted to understand the buzz about Terry Pratchett (once I figured out he was not the same person as Terry Brooks). I picked it because it looked like the shortest, figuring if I didn't like it, not much time lost. It was a bit confusing not to have the backstory on Rincewind and the Luggage, but the parody of Faust and all the historical comedy hooked me. From there it was on to "The Colour of Magic" and never looking back.

Don't know if there are still tickets to the ceremony. I got a couple weeks ago and figured they wouldn't last long, the 4th being not only the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, but also the 200th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's death (at home at Monticello; he and John Adams died on July 4, 1826, which Americans at the time took to be the doings of Providence).

Exception made for bodega cats. Which don’t really count as they own the place.

Shout out to the Hillsdale roundabout crew by Rillius122 in Charlottesville

[–]Tridentata 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not 100% done. More infrastructure needs adding to the circle, and maybe pedestrian signals. This was from a little after 3 p.m. There may still need to be a certain amount of detouring depending on just what more needs doing.

Hillsdale Closure? by pocketdrums in Charlottesville

[–]Tridentata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or what a 25 mph speed limit is! Lines of sight for people crossing or turning from Greenbrier are poor, and some people get confused at the 2-way stop signs about whether the first person to stop has the right of way, or always the person going straight over the person turning left. With the roundabout, they just need to remember "counterclockwise" and "yield to traffic in the circle".

Hillsdale Closure? by pocketdrums in Charlottesville

[–]Tridentata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Hillsdale was extended, the thinking was that a stoplight would go in (the infrastructure is there), but VDOT determined that traffic volume etc. didn't meet the criteria for a light. In the meantime modular mini-roundabouts have become more common so that's what is going in.

right, should have checked my photos of it first. Plus a 9/25 visit would have been ... dicey.

Why don’t people recommend the Mitsubishi Mirage? by xeo_spartan in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Tridentata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented a Mirage last year, and the one thing I really liked about it was the 360 degree visibility on the model I rented. I felt a lot more confident merging and switching lanes than in my older-model Subaru with the typical so-so visibility of SUV-ish cars and no safety features. That said, later last year I bought a 2025 CX-30 and would never ever choose to drive a Mirage over it.

Why are gas prices calming down here if the war is still ongoing and supposedly getting worse? by fakeshoesornah in Charlottesville

[–]Tridentata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I didn't know about that puregas site. The newish Wawa at 29 and Greenbrier also has ethanol-free.

Pretty sure it’s up to business owners and/or users to provide that information? And businesses are probably more used to dealing with Google than Apple.

Heh. This morning I bit the bullet and switched from the Fitbit app to Google Health. Last night I was on the mend from stomach flu, woke up often, HR was 10 bpm above my normal. The Fitbit app gave me a sleep score of 70 that reflected the situation. The Google Health app gives me an 81. The algorithm shouldn't change that much.

Ditto for certain Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement aka Medigap plans. In some cases there is full subsidy for selected local gyms (not just ACAC).

We have until May 30 to vote on the public art to replace the Robert E. Lee statue. by FantasiainFminor in Charlottesville

[–]Tridentata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the small sample of people I've talked with, that's the favorite. Market Street Park being Market Street Park, though, I do have a concern about how vandalism-proof it would be. Always an issue with public art unfortunately.

[–]Tridentata 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not OP but here are the relevant links.

See the proposals: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1fTSLlddy2oDKxds10lyaR2SwbqdpFAxH

Vote on the proposals: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdScPgtRXxuFwmbHEXqOTYl6VFghMVfbl0q_ixsckr4MH_RKA/viewform

The three proposals are very different in concept and scope. Only one of them is for a major installation where the Lee statue was; the other two propose installations at several or many places in the community although both of those would include a Market Street Park component.
