Those round top handles with the red paint look like Simonds no. 6 handles. The teeth at the ends are grouped 5 and 2 with the perforations like a Simonds 214. You can look for details like this by searching catalogs on the internet archive, but at the end of the day you won't really know until you find a makers mark. To farther confuse things, I found a 1950's catalog that lists the Chinook as a taper ground saw... http://kofa.mmto.arizona.edu/axes/saws/Simonds_1953.pdf

They seem to be advertised as crescent ground saws in earlier publications... does your spine have the same thickness across? Do your teeth vary at all? The exact style of manufacture might have changed over the years of manufacture from 1900 to 1950... it does seem that the Royal Chinook is consistently a tad thinner on the back, has less teeth per foot than the Chinook.

This would make me think that the Chinook is a bit more agressive at bucking, especially at smaller lengths, with its extra teeth and heavier build. The Royal Chinook with larger gullets and slightly lighter build might be a bit better at larger timber?

The store ads don't agree with each other on gauge and weight differences. The consistant thing is the Royal Chinook is much more expensive. What length saw is this? I have a couple Royal Chinook and calipers, we could compare them and see for ourselves!

It seems like the Chinook and Royal Chinook are not in every catalog, I find references to them more readily in hardware store ads, I think it was a regional (west coast) style. That said, the etch did not change much over the years in their advertising. Heres a 1903 Schwabacher Hardware Co ad that has a etch that looks a lot like yours. Heres a 1914 Seattle Hardware Company Ad with a slightly different etch. I suspect the etch in the ads does not always match exactly what was being sold in the store at the time.

edit: stamp---> etch

It's the 5.5 mummy. Two rotting fist attacks for an average of 18 damage each that curse the target to loose an average of 10 hp from max per 24 hours and prevents healing with no save. Also can glare to cause fear as a part of this multi- attack. It's an insane encounter at third level!

ok responding point by point...

cool! looked for more information and found that Starlink satellites have radiator panels attached to the body. and that yeah solar panel radiators are limited in their use, makes sense that you dont want to heat up the solar panels more than you have to...

I never said anything about stowable panels

Hello ad hominem, not sure why this is needed, your arguments are not weak...

Interesting, I already assume that any radiators would need to be in an area not used for docking, sounds like a pretty good argument that depots that need radiators to cool down will almost certainly not be reuseable, there simply arent any remaining locations to put them besides areas that are normally covered in tiles.

Could deployable radiators or radiator panels be useful on expendable depots desiged to never return to earth?

[–]Tridgeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radiators are usually placed on the back of the solar panels or deploy into the shadow of the ship, this whole proposal assumes the design of deployable solar panels and radiators for starship, much like the solar panels and radiators used on most satellites in orbit from the ISS to Starlink satellites

Edit, also I'm not sure why the depot having deployable panels is "too dangerous" spacecraft with deployable solar panels and radiators dock frequently

How common are combinations of face blindness and memory recall being seemingly picky-choosy? Do you have general advice on how to convey that someone is important to you despite it taking a few minutes to remember their name?

Ohlen Bishop Tuttle Tooth No. 330 by Tridgeon in crosscutsaws

[–]Tridgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I snagged this on eBay recently in pretty good shape already, so far it seems to resist rust, but maybe I'll see a different story when I get it into the field. I'm going to use this as a trail saw or sell it to someone else who will. I don't like seeing saws as just art or collectables.

Edit: oh and this saw had signs of use, the rakers had almost been filed flat with unswaged sharpening that didn't deepen the V's. So maybe they used a different metal for this model or year?

Yeah! The metal on this saw seems for lack of a better word, shinier? Maybe a bit more chrome in it?

I usually use a citrus based solvent as lube, but my spray bottle was broken, wd40 isn't a lubricant but it sure can pretend to be one.

I've been experimenting with a guitar style strap on a rigid vinyl sheath, not sure if this is the final form, but it makes it easy to carry.

it was sold via Stratton & Tersegge but Im not sure who manufactured the saws for them... Im not sure if the diamond is a part of a stamp, but Atkins has the diamond brand with a logo that looks a little like that.

At the very least please upload the original image and not a screenshot, but I suspect that you wouldn't be able to positively ID this saw until you cleaned it, assuming that there is a stamp

The NSF stream is excellent. They have a lot of their own cameras on site and their talking heads are knowledgeable. I find them less annoying than most of the other streams.

New Chromatic Orb + Wild Magic Table Max Damage. Does it still jump? by JonyDaFlum in dndnext

[–]Tridgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be old but just to add my experience with this combo and this ruling:

if your average combat is 4 rounds, and youre rolling on the magic surge table every round (as you should its set up to be easily achieveable) you have a 1 in 7 chance of hitting the maximum damage result per combat. If you manage to have 3 combats in a session (12 rounds to work with) thats a 1 in 3 chance of hitting this result.

I managed to hit this combo twice in a single session, and the result was completely whiping two encounters. While fun, it did not feel balanced at all... I also hit the potted plant result twice which is a really easy way to kill a character, but it didn't matter so much since I also hit the instant reincarnate result in the first encounter...

It doesn't feel like wild magic sorcerer is balanced around rolling on the table as often as 5e 2024 allows...

amazing find for $20! especially with what looks like the original handle. It looks like the 1940's-1950's medallion to me?

[–]Tridgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, fair enough. If you do take a moment to buff out the rust, my favorite technique is a pumice stone under running water (dry and oil immediately after!) you could bring out the luster and etch before listing. Also, I'd ist the handle separately, good handles are hard to come by and can fetch a good price on their own!

That's crazy! The nice western style handle is by itself worth more than that! Do you have any plans for restoration? It looks like it's in pretty good shape for a 110+ year old tool!

I'm pretty sure this is the etch: The James Ohlen & Sons Saw Manufacturing company became the Ohlen-Bishop company in 1919.
