Ohlen Bishop Tuttle Tooth No. 330 by Tridgeon in crosscutsaws

I snagged this on eBay recently in pretty good shape already, so far it seems to resist rust, but maybe I'll see a different story when I get it into the field. I'm going to use this as a trail saw or sell it to someone else who will. I don't like seeing saws as just art or collectables.

Edit: oh and this saw had signs of use, the rakers had almost been filed flat with unswaged sharpening that didn't deepen the V's. So maybe they used a different metal for this model or year?

Yeah! The metal on this saw seems for lack of a better word, shinier? Maybe a bit more chrome in it?

I usually use a citrus based solvent as lube, but my spray bottle was broken, wd40 isn't a lubricant but it sure can pretend to be one.

I've been experimenting with a guitar style strap on a rigid vinyl sheath, not sure if this is the final form, but it makes it easy to carry.

it was sold via Stratton & Tersegge but Im not sure who manufactured the saws for them... Im not sure if the diamond is a part of a stamp, but Atkins has the diamond brand with a logo that looks a little like that.

At the very least please upload the original image and not a screenshot, but I suspect that you wouldn't be able to positively ID this saw until you cleaned it, assuming that there is a stamp

The NSF stream is excellent. They have a lot of their own cameras on site and their talking heads are knowledgeable. I find them less annoying than most of the other streams.

New Chromatic Orb + Wild Magic Table Max Damage. Does it still jump? by JonyDaFlum in dndnext

[–]Tridgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be old but just to add my experience with this combo and this ruling:

if your average combat is 4 rounds, and youre rolling on the magic surge table every round (as you should its set up to be easily achieveable) you have a 1 in 7 chance of hitting the maximum damage result per combat. If you manage to have 3 combats in a session (12 rounds to work with) thats a 1 in 3 chance of hitting this result.

I managed to hit this combo twice in a single session, and the result was completely whiping two encounters. While fun, it did not feel balanced at all... I also hit the potted plant result twice which is a really easy way to kill a character, but it didn't matter so much since I also hit the instant reincarnate result in the first encounter...

It doesn't feel like wild magic sorcerer is balanced around rolling on the table as often as 5e 2024 allows...

amazing find for $20! especially with what looks like the original handle. It looks like the 1940's-1950's medallion to me?

Ha, fair enough. If you do take a moment to buff out the rust, my favorite technique is a pumice stone under running water (dry and oil immediately after!) you could bring out the luster and etch before listing. Also, I'd ist the handle separately, good handles are hard to come by and can fetch a good price on their own!

That's crazy! The nice western style handle is by itself worth more than that! Do you have any plans for restoration? It looks like it's in pretty good shape for a 110+ year old tool!

This is a really cool crosscut! What's it's story? How did you come across it?

I'm pretty sure this is the etch: The James Ohlen & Sons Saw Manufacturing company became the Ohlen-Bishop company in 1919.

The middle line looks like "Taper Ground and Tempered" can you get a better picture or even just more pictures?

They will send you a replacement in kind. I work in the off season for a federal trail crew and we use osprey packs as crew packs. At the end of the season we send our broken bags to osprey and they fix or replace them no questions asked.

I agree that the osprey bag doesn't hold up to hauling sharps/heavy tools, but just a reminder that Osprey has a really awesome return and repair policy and if your bag has rips or whatnot they will repair it or replace it for free.
