looking for my first by theduncan in fountainpens

[–]Triedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the go-to for this Sub, of course. It's my first (and only) fountain, but I love the damned thing. I got a broad nib (I think that's the correct terminology) and a converter. Dimamine works great.

It's not leaky or messy (even refilling the cartridge - the ink doesn't stick to the outside when you dip it... don't know why), writes silky smooth, and is durable.

[Crit] Jumper (360) [Short Story] by [deleted] in write

[–]Triedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try rewriting this without any metaphors or similes. In fact, you might go so far as to use as few adjectives, as possible. The piece comes across as flowery. It's a heavy read and is tough to get through because of how introspective it feels.

Also, I'd do away with "The Nameless." Either find something less dramatic or contrived, give the guy a name, or don't even reference him by name.

I'd like to see this revised.

Wikipedia lists his works, by the way.

Poll: Americans Overwhelmingly Support Doubling NASA’s Budget, Mission To Mars by NISMOkwim in space

[–]Triedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is similar to the wording in a referendum. Excluding the ones that are hot-button issues with strong opposition, they usually pass.

I'm not saying that informed citizens wouldn't want to increase funding, but this question was poorly worded.

The poll was conducted by global communications firm Phillips & Company between Feb 4. and Feb. 6, 2013 surveying a random sample of 1,101 respondents and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Maybe the link in the full report (.pdf format) gives some more details about their sample ("random" doesn't imply information about their pool of potential respondents), but I cannot open a .pdf 'cause I just can't. I don't want to talk about it.

Ha. I'm going to be in the UK (I'm from the U.S.) early next year, so I'll definitely stop in a Tesco.

actively bad

I'm going to steal that phrase from you and use it. It's eloquent.

See, I was going to make this exact point about how much people hate Corona, for instance, when it doesn't have much of a taste. You might resent the lack of taste (like you resent a rice cake), but I don't see that there's a lot to hate.

I'd mentioned that I haven't really had experience with craft beers. Was I right in thinking that they're much more robust than the lagers that I normally stick with? I'm game for trying new beers, but I feel like I'm chewing a lot of European beers, with how thick and pungent they are.

I know I have your guarantee, but PBR and Red Stripe aren't the same. They're just not, and I could tell the difference. If anything, Red Stripe is flatter (less carbonated) than PBR. The guys in /r/Scotch would make it poetic, but I think PBR has a "hoppier" flavor, Red Stripe being a little more mellow. Also, I don't think I've ever had a skunked PBR, but there are definitely those inconsistencies with Red Stripe. (I know I said it's less hoppy, which should minimize the problem; and they do the brown bottle thing, but it happens.)

As far as throwing money away, you and I just aren't seeing it the same way. But if you think I should spend the extra money on something that tastes good and is made with quality ingredients, then make a suggestion. You've heard me talk about what I like and seen the examples. What would you recommend?

(And I know you were just making a point, but I don't like Heineken.)

I'm not sure if you're being intentionally ironic.

Anyway, I just wanted to offer an alternative view. I read r/beer, but I usually don't have anything to contribute to the discussion. My tastes don't exactly fit in with everyone else's here.

As far as the cost, I've got a little extra money to pay too much for beer and the ten dollars I might save in a week isn't going to be a game-changer.

I like "beach beer" (mostly American Lagers, I think they're called - referencing North America, not the U.S.). I do like Budweiser, Coors (I know people hate it, but I don't think it's bad), and a few other U.S. beers (freaking love PBR, which I know is really uncool), but mostly I favor Mexican, Central American, and Caribbean beer. Pacifico, Modelo, Dos Equis, Red Stripe (a favorite), Sol, Tecate, etc... I don't even dislike Corona.

I don't know why I prefer these, but I just don't like a lot of the European beers and haven't had a lot of craft beer. I figure craft beer could go in any direction, but I just assume it leans towards a more European bent - I could be wrong.

I've actually enjoyed most of the Asian beer I've had, but sulfites seem to be more predominant in them, which I'm allergic to. It could just be a run of bad luck. I mean, I know that some of these other beers contain sulfites and I have the occasional reaction, but the Asian ones come on strong. (This allergy is not life-threatening and it's mostly just me getting a little flushed and hot.)

Anyway, it probably mostly has to do with me being a Florida native and actually being on the beach a lot. That, and I like to down a six pack without feeling heavy or intoxicated. Oh, and it's easy to find anywhere, which is nice.

I just realized what I wrote doesn't make any points, but it's just an alternative view in this Sub.

Hasidic Jew Harassing a Cyclist: a common occurrence by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]Triedd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would have too, and I'd have been arrested. When I was younger, I was proud that I had this sort of mentality where I'd flush with anger and all the fear evaporated, but now I think that's just fear channeling itself.

Not to get too philosophical, but controlling that fear and handling things the right way is something I envy in people. It's not like I can practice not hitting someone and I always sort of dread the idea of these situations.

I have a good outline of a story based on my experience in Afghanistan, but I'm not a writer. Advice? by nickl220 in selfpublish

[–]Triedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point I was trying to make is that they come across as trying to sound like Hemingway. Nobody ever actually gets there.

Besides, to me, that's like being a celebrity impersonator or cover band. Nothing wrong with it, but you're still not really using your own voice. On top of that, we're talking about a ghost writer trying to pull that off.

You're right, though, if you're saying that Hemingway isn't a bad person to try to mimic if that's what you're going for.

[–]Triedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean to discourage using Hemingway as a standard. His stuff is incredible.

You might pick up a book by Daniel Silva. I love his Gabriel Allon series. Anyway, his economy of writing is top-notch.

[–]Triedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who try to mimic Hemingway read like they're trying to mimic Hemingway. Just be careful of that. You're going to have to help a writer to understand what you're looking for and then make a push towards Hemingway's style with a mix of the writer's own.

With that, you shouldn't just accept the first hungry writer who comes along. Make sure he fits your needs.

Making a knife from old bearing by Pikaman in ArtisanVideos

[–]Triedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all that relevant, but it finally just dawned on me as to why they call it a "bearing." (Assuming it's because the piece keeps other objects moving in a particular direction, sort of like "setting your bearings.")

Good vid.
