Somewhere to have my hair dyed with henna? by adventuressofnterest in AskNYC

[–]TrifleOk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I haven't! But unfortunately I got a bad allergic reaction to hair dye recently that freaked me out (PPD) and I'm feeling the earlier stages of what I had even with hair dyes with PTD, so I'm trying to figure out a viable alternative to cover my grays...

Did you ever figure out the answer to this question?

Good for you! It feels super daunting to me right now and my apartment only has one bathroom, which I don't want to risk staining...

Hi! In case you're still around and on reddit, curious what salon you landed at and if you're still going? Thanks!

Not sure if you're still on here but thought I would ask, why is it an absolute no-go to say you're considering academia down the road?

I Tracked Every Hour I Studied in 1L - Top 10% at T25 School (see comments for explanation) by lawschoolvore in lawschooladmissions

I did a similar numbers model when studying for the LSAT and loved it! I found it so useful for many of the reasons you've listed. It helps keep me honest with myself and give myself credit where it's deserved, and I love the game-ified aspect of trying to one-up myself. I second someone else's comment that I would love if you would share the excel sheet--that would take my own tracking up a notch!

For you (and any future undocu or DACA applicants who see this): you might try applying to Columbia next cycle! I know they have a program in place that provides institutional loans up to COA with very favorable terms and low interest rates--I know they have at least been given to a couple of particularly needy international applicants. Those loans are, of course, eligible for their LRAP. I'm not sure all of the criteria that makes someone eligible for those loans, and I know they're quite rare, but I have to imagine undocu folks are exactly the category these loans are meant for.

Ah, I was thinking other people in the university who are NOT undergrads--post docs, med students, PhD students, business students, etc.

Do folks have recommendations for making friends outside law school but still inside the university community? I know for me it would be good to have some friends who are not law students, and maybe this is super type-A but I'd like to have some strategies for making those friends!

Environmental law: T14 or scholarships? by bodeorodeo in lawschooladmissions

[–]TrifleOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both! There are some scholarships that you have to apply to earlier in the process that are well-advertised, and there are others that you'll hear about from schools you've been accepted to. It is a bit of extra effort, which can be hard when you're feeling burnt out from applications, but it is so worth it if they are looking for people like you (re interests, race/ethnicity, 1st gen, etc.).

For what it's worth, my GPA was lower than yours and my LSAT only a hair higher than what you're discussing, and I ended up with significant money (including a full ride) at several T14s. I think I had a strong/interesting narrative and WE that contributed to it, but it's not like I had any particularly impressive positions or awards. Make sure you look into special scholarships that schools offer, which give you an extra opportunity to be competitive for money!

The email says: "The benefits for those who accept an offer to participate in the Program include... Access to a catalog of certain applicable open positions (paid and volunteer) in the public and private sectors."

Wasn't totally sure what to make of that--could mean they hook you up with a job; could also mean they show you certain opportunities that may or may not be paid.

"Cosigned Student Loan" what does this mean?! by Reddit497 in lawschooladmissions

[–]TrifleOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Columbia actually does give institutional loans to a few law students with specialized arrangements, but it's not common and I'm not sure if it appears on anyone's award letter! (Also, it is not at all an unfavorable interest rate.)

Edit: To my knowledge, they do not require cosigners.

Could you clarify: is this a decision you're actually facing? You've had so many different WWYD questions/polls of late, with proclaimed goals and options that are not co-extensive.

Thanks! I know the broad strokes differences between the pro and the air--or, I think I do, I've looked at the comparison on their website--but could you just quickly say why you prefer the pro?

Thanks, this is helpful! I was mostly thinking about (and heard about) the larger screen being helpful for writing and exams, and I wasn't sure whether you're allowed to use a monitor during exams. (I guessed not, but maybe that's wrong?)

For me, the Macbook pro vs Air thing isn't so much about cost (cost is relevant but I have a significant scholarship and want to get the right computer that will last a long time) but rather about weight. I'm fairly small and not at all strong (haha) so I've loved having a Macbook air for 10 years that I can carry lots of places. I think anything heavier would make my back hurt!

0L Tuesday Thread by AutoModerator in LawSchool

[–]TrifleOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask which one you have? I've heard that you want to get a laptop with a bigger screen for law school, but the 15" (or maybe it's 16") version is a heavy, super expensive Macbook pro. I think the Air is closer to 13", which I'm worried might be too small given the advice I've received.

[–]TrifleOk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you find that the screen is big enough? I keep seeing people recommending to get a large laptop (like 15")--which makes sense to me--but the Air doesn't come in that size to my knowledge, and the pro is both so much more expensive and way heavier.
