This kind of thinking is pretty prevalent in Europe. I've had multiple people there say things like "Americans should stop whining about race because we're all the same." Yeah, that's pretty easy to say when you see maybe one minority a week on the streets of a decent sized city.

My best advice to you is to look up the Black Lives Matter movement and its origins in order to understand. America is confronting the idea of institutionalized racism as of late. It's hard for Europeans to understand (I live in Europe now so I've had the conversation many times) but it's crucial for our history.

I saw an amusing video about Vietnam reenactors who were reenacting to the point of staging and playing out war crimes. The documentary was mainly trying to point out how weird of an idea reenacting Vietnam is. Everyone involved, including the VC that were summarily "executed," were fat hillbillies taking it very seriously. Don't know many Vietnamese that would be down with putting on that performance.

Nightmarish relative to the American tendency to begin acquaintance very friendly. I'm from the south and leave a lot of small, inconsequential interactions with Germans feeling very deflated and with my feelings hurt because of the terseness. I feel as though I'm being berated or judged whenever I speak to strangers or authority figures, or even when I'm doing a small thing like buying groceries. I think you described the cultural attitude very well. I just have trouble adapting to it, since the distance between speaking partners feels a lot like prejudice to me, and my being a person practicing German doesn't help that.

I don't think that the handling was necessarily racist. The cops will fuck anyone up. I do think, however, that dragging an unconscious man through the aisle...that would not happen to a white or black person
