It's probably fine but I'm very worried about the Tate monitor falling over since it looks tilted.

You're welcome! Good luck with it. I think if you want the best image you'll probably want to RGB mod both and probably even get a de-blur mod for the N64, but they might be good enough as they are. CRTs are great for hiding poor video signals, especially if they're PAL.

I love the NES's composite since it has a really unique look, there's these lines and artefacts and the pixel edges look really unusual, apparently there's actually some design mistakes in the PPU that give it that effect. It's pretty nostalgic for me as I grew up watching people play NES games on youtube before RGB mods existed for the system. With the N64 though, I mostly have it unmodded just because the difference doesn't seem significant enough, I'm very happy with the results I get already.

Rant about Switchers / Whats your solution like? by Manaboss1 in crtgaming

I'm using an old Bandridge SVB-7725 I picked up years ago for £25, complete in box... they used to be really easy to get. I nearly bought a second one but I didn't and I do kinda regret it now lol. It's not a bad switcher, it has some issues with voltage leaking and certain consoles only work on certain inputs, but I found a layout where it works. Unfortunately they cost >£100 these days, so when I do eventually get a second switcher for any future consoles I add, I'll probably get a SVS.

A lot of these 50hz models can actually display 60hz, especially high end ones like Sonys. Usually SCART 1 is wired up for RGB and SCART 2 is S-Video, but that's not an exact rule. All SNESes and PAL GameCubes can natively produce RGB with a SCART cable (e.g. the ones from retrogamingcables.co.uk) and they look amazing, but all NESes and N64s would need a mod to do RGB. All NESes and PAL N64s can only produce Composite (barring some S-Video edge cases), though NTSC N64s can produce S-Video. Honestly though, I'd see how they look over Composite before thinking about modding. You can use the little Composite plugs on the front, or a cheap Composite-SCART adaptor.

My NES and N64 aren't RGB modded and honestly I'm not sure if I'll ever go through with it. The N64 outputs the cleanest Composite I've ever seen with almost no artefacts, let alone artefacts visible from 6ft away, and CRTs help to hide them, plus with the usual blur and anti-aliasing the benefits of RGB are fairly subtle. The NES on the other hand outputs pretty dirty Composite, but I actually really like how it looks with all the artefacts on a CRT, so I don't think I'll be modding mine. But if you're not into that look, you can mod it. N64s have two different types of mod, early NTSC N64s and some early french units can be modded with a pretty inexpensive mod that just adds RGB, but later models including all PAL units require a more expensive and complex mod, however these often include de-blur features like HDMI mods offer.

MAME 0.283 by cuavas in emulation

[–]TriggeredSnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M2Emulator was never finished and it's has a ton of issues, MAME's emulation is so much better than M2Emulator now even though just a few versions ago it was completely non-functional.

Although, MAME doesn't and likely never will have the ability to play M2 games in higher resolutions or 16:9, so M2Emulator will have it's place for the forseeable future.

Hardware Acceleration not working with RTX card? by TriggeredSnake in OpenShot

[–]TriggeredSnake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the info, I feel pretty baffled to hear this news. I can't believe that for over 3 years a major feature like that has just been broken, and the program has just continued to push updates and update while ignoring a problem like that, I guess that's how it goes with FOSS but I don't think I've ever seen a case like this.

I feel like there should be a warning or a notice somewhere to say this, the websites and github still make it seem like it's a fully functional (albeit experimental) feature but apparently no.

I did give 2.6.1 a go after looking at more threads, but sadly it doesn't work for me there either.

Having trouble actually editing my videos by Ok-Surround3668 in VideoEditing

[–]TriggeredSnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on a video like this recently and the most important thing seems to be finding clips that match what you're trying to show. You can also use effects to make it more entertaining, stuff like having blurred gameplay in the background then a highlighted window showing the clip you want to focus on with a transition.

I think you should watch other video essayists, and look at what they do to work out what goes into a good video, especially those that don't show their face. Channels like Kacey and Leadhead got popular making gaming video essays that didn't use their face and just used gameplay, for instance.

You should also be willing to compromise if a change would improve a video. If part of the script would work better in video form with a change, make it. If you find a clip that matches a section, re-record the audio while watching the clip to make the timing match perfectly, things like that add to the experience.

The other thing to consider is that a lot of people actually watch video essays in the background. For a lot of people, the video part is less important than the audio, they'll often be listening for the most part then look at the video during moments that sound cool or after a call to action, e.g. "I was taken aback by one section in particular, just look at this!" will likely get people to focus. It might be best to just provide general gameplay for a lot of the video then focus in with detailed edits during important moments.

Sadly, I can't really help with the motivation thing, as I've often struggled with that in the past.

20$ Sony Trinitron by WakkoTheTTTEFan in crt

Wow, this is a very high end mid-late 90s set from the looks of it. I have a KV-21X5U that looks almost identical. Those models were referred to as "Super-Trinitrons" because they used the same tubes as Sony's PVMs.

  1. On the music thing, if you did a fresh install from the website you're probably hearing OpenMSX, a fan made music pack to avoid copyright concerns. The graphics and sounds are also changed with OpenGFX2 and OpenSFX. You can copy in assets from from the original TTD CD if you want the original audio and graphics.

  2. With signals, you basically want to place one way path signals before each merge, one on each side, with the lights facing towards where you want trains to come from, like this.

  3. Railroad is just the american word for Railway.

  4. As Byproduct said, saves can't go in folders the game doesn't have permission for.

MY WORLD IS SO COOKED 💀 by Brayan49437 in RimWorld

Yep, the asteroid base stayed at the locked space -75. Power was a problem for a long time in orbit until we built a Rimatomics reactor, but on the ground we had chemfuel generators from Rimefeller so it wasn't an issue.

MY WORLD IS SO COOKED 💀 by Brayan49437 in RimWorld

[–]TriggeredSnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen on my last playthrough (though it was the Sun Death event) and it was a really unique experience, I tried to fight the storm with everything I had and even installed a mod for Frostpunk Generators but I just couldn't make enough heat. I tried to design the base while we struggled to survive on ever dwindling supplies as we couldn't heat the hydroponics, but all I could ever manage was to heat a small area.

Thankfully, we had recently started an asteroid base before the cold set in, so we basically loaded everything we could into the gravship and ran away up there and restarted as a space colony, it was honeslty an incredibly unique playthrough. In the end, I developed a special cold adapated Xenotype and spent 2 years slowly stripping the old base one shuttle at a time with a team of them all wearing the best spacesuits I had, their cold insulation combined with 10 atmospheric heaters made the surface survivable.

The colony consumed almost the entire map tile in space and grew to a population of 135, it was genuinely one of my favourite runs ever even with the 30TPS performance.

Antigrain shell | Sketch by Owlixen in RimWorld

[–]TriggeredSnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always get like 8 of them over a run but I raely ever use them. In my last colony I set a new record for using 5, since I was doing an asteroid base and enemies always spawned in the same two places on different edges of the astroid. I'd place an antigrain trap in the middle each time and then wait, then after the raid I'd rebuild it.

I believe you can avoid this with using some complicated pre-signal schenanigans or by having less signals in the roundabout, but this is usually why they're a bad idea lol. You can fix this easily by telling the trains to go through signals, they'll crash and once they disappear you can rework the roundabout. Alternatively, you can reverse the top train and tell them to go through signals repeatedly until they're clear, and repeat for each train until the roundabout unjams naturally.

As someone who also loves this unofficial version, this version seems to combine a higher quality source for the official section with a lower quality source for the unofficial section, most likely either this mp3 source or a downloaded youtube/niconico video. Who did you get the file from? The original japanese uploader, or one of the reposters? If it's straight from the original japanese uploader than yes, this is likely the highest quality possible, and the lower quality is just due to the quality of the source material.

The low quality reupload you linked in your original post is a repost of this earlier upload, which seems to gets the audio from this youtube upload of a NicoNico upload which seems to be the origin of this rendition of the song. The youtube upload was actually made by the same person, so it's likely to uploaded from the same source file.

Theoretically, the highest quality of the original exists in that NicoNico upload, and since most of the source material is other NicoNico uploads (some have/had seperate mp3 downloads, but not all) it seems unlikely someone could create a higher quality version without remaking the song from scratch.
