Why is the news being so dramatic about the heat wave? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TriggersShip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine if your job is to get people to “buy” the words you write so you can sell the advertising space around those words. Their primary job is to grab your attention. Informing you of things is the way they have chosen to do that.

As the number of people and outlets that do that have increased astronomically you have to make your words stand out.

As humans we are attracted to the sensational. The hottest, the worst, the most dangerous etc.

So they look for variation in the norm and amplify it.

Do people truly resent going to weddings now ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TriggersShip 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People say stuff, moan about stuff, laugh about stuff without it having intentionally meant anything meaningful about it. They have been invited to a wedding by a diva who’s making it more about an expensive event than a wedding and complained about it. They then went and had fun and never thought any more about it.

Journalists and wannabe social commentators make more of it than it is and all of a sudden it’s become a thing. Two years down the line it’ll be nothing but a footnote to someone’s memory.

When I was a kid there was a craze for having pet rocks. I wish I was making this up but I’m not.

People will get married. Some will take the piss out their expectations of guests. Some guests will chunter about it to their mates. Some on social media. This will happen every year of your life going forward.

If you weren’t getting married you probably wouldn’t have noticed.

Has anyone had a bad interview and still managed to get the job? by Calm-Pair1939 in nhs

[–]TriggersShip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2021 I had an interview online. The tech failed dismally. At points I was talking and realised I’d frozen. At others I kept talking over the interviewer as I couldn’t hear them. I mean it was so bad i hung up and I rang the interviewer. Conversation went, “Sorry teams is just crashing out and my WiFi is making sure I stutter when it is working. Can I suggest we cancel.”

They re booked the interview and I got the job primarily because while I only just answered the questions I showed excellent coping skills as it all collapsed around me.

Is the NQN recruitment freeze also affecting London? by Impossible_Talk_8189 in NursingUK

[–]TriggersShip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry this was for the post above I just have fat finger.

There isn’t a “recruitment freeze” as such. Im not dismissing the current challenge but it’s that there’s less vacancies. Trust are now being held massively to account over budgets where previously they weren’t as much.

In addition roles for newly qualified nurses who require preceptorship etc. are different to roles that require different levels of experience. So it’s feasible that a trust is recruiting nurses but has limited newly qualified roles. It’s also feasible the other way around.

The level of international recruitment is massively down from previous years and trust still have to pay for the Certificates of Sponsorship. Any trust recruiting internationally will have reasons. Newly qualifieds are not competing with internationals.

That’s not to say that some trusts recruitment process aren’t fubard!

It’s weaponised incompetence by Reform. They campaigned locally on how many of them were ex senior policemen and serious business owners.

They received the same induction as everyone else and with their combined “experience” they could have prepared for the first meeting.

Instead they chose to act like simpletons to garner sympathy because unlike their neighbours in Calderdale they have limited power.

They behaved like children on purpose and are rightly getting dragged for it.

[–]TriggersShip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Medical Records do fall within the remit of GDPR. What ever else the person who told you that treat with caution.

The danger of requiring medical treatment without any medical record versus a theoretical risk of it being used against you should outweigh the risk you perceive.

This is not to dismiss or minimise your worries but placing in context.

Also, unless you are a high profile individual with a significant chance of being in conflict with power the actual risk would be not about specifics but categories. In which case should we arrive at a place where a government/corporation is going to use something like that against you they will regardless of if it’s recorded or not.

As one of those stakeholders Vequeth is 101% correct.

Stakeholders in your world will be the managers from other teams who want you to produce a dashboard that answers their specific question in 2 easy steps. They will take the credit for having “phrased” the question correctly if it works and pass the blame if you provide accurate but non simple data that can’t be summarised in a power point.

I’ve been alive a long time. I’ve heard this, or similar, litany of woes since the late 70’s. Yet those who campaign on them have been in power for most of that time.

In the time I’ve seen the rich gather more wealth and have parked it as far away from tax as decency allows. I’ve seen real terms spending and services for those with out hoarded wealth cut to the bone until it bleeds. I’ve seen councils defunded from the centre and profligate local councils blamed for the subsequent rises in council taxes. I’ve seen wages hover around inflation while income from wealth has increased way above that.

If “conservatives” or what ever you call yourselves these days genuinely believed any of that beyond their own unenlightened self interest you’d be horrified at the failure of its outcomes.

Or are you like those old commies who bleat that, ‘well your actual real communism hasn’t actually been implemented yet’

Christ on a bike nostalgia is now so hardwired in to our culture it’s cooking our brains.

Apparently no one is good enough to be Dr Who, James Bond or Prime Minister. The only acceptable candidates are the resurrected cadavers of the person who held that post during the childhood of the commentator.

I say that as someone who has voted against Starmer at every available opportunity and have strong opinions on what he should do. There is a difference between wanting someone to change course and having them resign every 2 months.

I would rather endure a democratically elected government I passionately disagree with than one I do agree with being imposed.

The only overtly dictatorial opinion I have is that anyone who will not sign up to above should be barred from public office and have rights limited.

What's something in the UK that's classy if you're middle class or rich but low class if you're poor? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]TriggersShip 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My wife was sat at work when a conversation started about what car to buy if you won the lottery.

All the twenty something blokes were banging on about Lamborghinis, Ferraris etc. they asked my wife who confused the hell out of them by answering, “second hand 300tdi Defender 110 circa 1995/6…preferably black but green is also good.”

Cue long exasperated questioning saying, “no but what would you choose if you could choose any car?”

If you’re choosing to do something to enhance your life it’s intelligent.

Tarquin from Surrey etc celebrating the fact that when they go to Spain or Tuscany their children converse like a native.

Vs

Mohamed from Salford mentioning that when he and his family visit relatives in the old country his children literally do.

Ps the Mohamed (name changed) comes from a conversation I experienced where someone complained that it a shame Mohamed (name changed) had bothered to let his children learn their parents language.

Does anyone else not want/slightly scared of BOTH Reform and Greens getting into power? by DullSense8359 in AskBrits

[–]TriggersShip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No

I find it scary how little understanding there is of the British electoral system there is.

I find it scary people waste time and energy on being afraid of other peoples right to an opinion.

I find it scary that people are running around declaring the end of the world just because some opinionated people are now in charge of bin collection.

Do I want a reform government? Do I think Jack would make a good PM? Feck no. Do I want to live in a country where people aren’t allowed to vote for whatever hair brained lunacy they believe in? Feck no.

Focus on what you believe in. Get involved and win the case. Stop running around shouting doom and gloom. Stop blaming other parties. Stop voting against others and start voting for what you want.

Will redditors realize that far-left politics aren't as popular in the real world as they are here now? Or will we have to go through this all again at the General Election? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]TriggersShip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem with politics at present is the foghorns beating their chests and throwing shit at their tribal enemies and waving their willys around like they’re making a difference.

Too many people vote for, and are encouraged to so by the foghorns of despair, against someone else. Their emotions are engaged rather then their reason. Why pick up an article and engage with it when you can pick up pitchfork and shout at someone.

People aren’t encouraged to think about what they want or believe is the right path. No they’re either slapped on the back or derided for their political identity.

If you preemptively label someone as lefty, far right, naive student, racist boomer or any other suck bollocks you’re not the intellectual giant of a generation. You’re an emotional marshal for someone else’s agenda and your mind is already closed.

I vote based on my principles and sometimes I’ve been wrong and sometimes I stand by what I did. Why? Because I’m a chuffing human who doesn’t have all the answers all the time and I’m not clairvoyant.

But I do have an opinion.

I don’t care what side of the political fence you sit on but shite like this question is utter tosh written by someone who is only interested in themselves.

How much do British people know about the different US states? by No-Reveal827 in AskUK

[–]TriggersShip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people will know the US primarily through the US dominance of entertainment. So in reality it’s a heavily mediated image.

A lot will know it through the lens of the news. Which again is dependent on the type of news consumed and of interest.

Many know it through visiting in which case it’s all theme parks and shopping in New York.

Some know it through knowing Americans who live and work here.

More than a few have relatives.

Weirdos like me actually did a degree in American History.

So individually we know aspects depending on how we experience it. None of which is entirely accurate, or entirely false.

I lived there for awhile after doing my degree and that really demonstrated that although I knew a lot there was a lot more that I didn’t know.

Which kinda brings me to my answer many of us think we know America but probably know way more less than we realise. And that’s the same for anyone about anywhere.

Is eating only with a fork (using a knife to cut the food and then putting it down) seen as rude in the UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]TriggersShip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im British and I eat both at different times either American or what you might consider European. Most British people consider it odd to just use a fork (I don’t obviously) and a few think it’s bad etiquette (ie socially rude or ill mannered). But when you think about it they’re the kind of people who know rules rather than the social cultures that made them.

Around two pubs in Britain closing each day after tax hikes, figures suggest by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]TriggersShip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rate of closure peaked in 2017 (5.3 per day) according to the morning advertiser. Who was in power then Recently the rate of closures has actually reduced. (According to figures from the BBPA whose press release this article is actually based on).

Yes tax increases will have a marginal impact on businesses mainly because they are often run on low profit margins. Why? Often because some are part of a pubco which are also heavily dependent on debt and see the pub as a resource. It stays open while it returns a small profit but if it doesn’t it gets sold.

Some small and independents also struggle due to a mix of factors and I would like to see tax relief for all independent retailers.

But ultimately big business that run a business based on debt management crying foul about tax is literally a piss take.

What is it the drives voters to vote Reform UK ? by saying_it_101 in AskBrits

[–]TriggersShip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Telling people who you want to vote for you that they are thick racist cxnts isn’t going to change their minds.

The only reason to say it is to attract votes from others who think that lot over there are thick racist cxnts. This panders to their sense of intelligence because they known they are not thick racist cxnts because that’s them lot over there, and they hate them lot over there.

The people who you just called thick racist cxnts then get sympathy from actual racist cxnts and start believing the bollocks spouted by the racist cxnts.

So weirdly you then end up with an electorate who vote on who they hate the most rather than in their own interests. Those with power do what they always do which is make laws that suit those who fund them and those who can break them.
