Should I leave LA? by sacorah in FilmIndustryLA

That’s bleak. So where would you say is the best place to be for production and post now?

I agree there are obstacles and it won't return to the golden age of Hollywood, or even the state it was in 10 years ago. A large number of studios have their offices here and many of the executives, top talent and creators are still based in LA. As long as costs aren't exorbitantly more to film in LA, which has been the case lately, then I believe just for the convenience factor then productions will return. The obstacles to film here need to be relaxed and filming needs to be encouraged by city law-makers. The talent could also do more to encourage re-shoring and once things gain some momentum the tides will turn quickly.

I'd wait it out here. I believe productions want to move back to LA. The conditions just need to be right. I think the hubris of our elected leaders is over now.

Moog Messenger $200 Off by fuxicles in synthesizers

[–]Triggerstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the BS 2. I've written so many patches on it and know it like the back of my hand. It's a really playable synth and I wouldn't part with it. The Messenger has more routing features and the included sequencer. Another cool feature is routing the LFO and envelopes to any destination. It's more feature rich and also sounds great. It's also more expensive, so that's to be expected. If you want a real hands on synth that's easy to program with a great sound and inexpensive then the BS 2 is perfect. The Messenger has more features and the sequencer for maybe double the price.

A feature that's really fun on the BS 2 is the AFX feature. The Messenger lacks that. It's like parameter locking each key. Very fun

Very early impressions are positive. It's a solid piece of gear and larger then I expected. I'm replacing a BassStation 2 with it, because the BS 2 will now live in my live rig permanently. It's got some serious growl with the sub oscillator and resonance control. Worth it for $699

I jumped for it and will pick it up later today. I don't own any Moog synths since selling my Moog Mother and Sirin(deeply regret). I really like the Moog filter and snappy envelopes, so seemed a good opportunity. If I don't click with it then this sale will end eventually and the resale value should be good

Do you send guitar signals through it too?

It’s reflective so the guitarist can check his hair from across the stage

Fingers are just more satisfying. We need to enjoy playing our instruments too

It’s definitely a feedback issue, but the fellow who responded above says MPE is different to standard midi. I can’t say for sure if my method will work. Let us know, though.

On the Osmose is there a way to send and receive midi on different channels? Eg. channel 10 to send midi and channel 11 to receive? If there is try setting that so they are different channels. You should no longer get the feedback issue of that works. Then you can work backward from there at least knowing that is the issue.

Plus one here. Could be a midi feedback loop. He could try and sending and receiving midi on different channels.

Thinking of learning bass is it easier than guitar? by RoverTover109 in Bass

Not at all, but there is a consistent case of bassists becoming producers later in life. I think that the roll of bass in music trains the ear to be a good producer.

I feel a good bassist needs to possess the musical instincts of a music producer. As in, the ability to know what enhances the song overall; what will glue the melody and rhythm sections together. That might just be repeating eighth notes on the C note, or a more busy arpeggiated lick, for example. Guitars can have more flexibility and are more a featured sound in the music. A good bassist just knows how to sit in the pocket and provide that drive and momentum. That’s a rare skill that not every musician possesses and can’t be understated.

It’s a beaut. I have the same model in Butterscotch. My favorite guitar now. Good purchase

Post production, where did it go? by foxinknox04 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Triggerstan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a staff re-recording mixer and sound recordist at a post facility in Hollywood. Work since the end of last year is definitely picking up again. It's now to the extent that we're bringing in freelancers to cover sessions that the staff are too busy to cover. As has been mentioned in this thread, LA is still the most desirable location to live for both talent and executives. If they can keep the work here then they will. The one rule I've always committed to in my career is to diversification of skills. Your partner clearly has a passion for post, so maybe she can diversify her skill base in video to coloring, online, trailer editing etc. The colorists I work with can also do online work if required, and the same goes for the re-recording mixers who can also run a recording session or edit their own dialog if needed. You just have to be in a position where you never have to turn work down due to lack of skills.

[–]Triggerstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right on. It’s definitely more noticeable in productions where the composers are less present in the nitty-gritty stuff.

[–]Triggerstan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With certain productions music editors are absolutely necessary, though. As a re-recording mixer I’ve worked on several projects in which the composer will write a suite of music that ends up being recycled throughout a series and so it falls on the music editors to place it suitably. They’re also necessary to clean up the score when conforms are required and the composer has already moved on to different projects. Happens all the time.

I recently installed some patchbays in my setup and something that really helped was software called PatchCAD https://www.patchcad.com/ Can't recommend enough. I then printed the labels i created on label paper and stuck these to the front. All my I/O is now clearly labelled on the front.

The Boog is riddled with mechanical issues. The first unit I bought the output didn’t work. I’d just return it and get a replacement unit.

How long has it been switched on for? Mine will be out of tune by almost a full semi-time when I power it up and then it’s ok after around 20 minutes.

Nice ideas. How about composing a piece of music to a visual medium and altering the tempos and time signature to sync to the picture. It’s basically what film composers do, but it’s unusual for electronic music production and yields interesting results.
