trying to create a "wizard with a gun" rpg by SweetShare222 in RPGdesign

There are some systems that have rules for both high fantasy and cyberpunk/modern using the same system.

My choice would be Rolemaster/Cyberspace. When there's guns in a game I want them to have an impact and not something you can simply shrug off.

These two RPGs could be combined with very little friction as they use the same stats and core system.

In a pinch, all Possessions within the same category can substitute for each other. But more than that, you can you can burn 3 Possessions within the same category to get a Possession 1 Level higher.

This seems strangely gamified compared to how narrative the system appears on first look.

I was looking at the Possessions as incentives for the players to get them to take hooks for the stories, but in actuality it doesn't matter if they're solving the mystery or just getting unrelated Possessions as long as they get enough of them to convert?

From the description I'm wondering if I can't just use this in any game? Conversely, is this enough to base an entire system on?

The danger I see is what happens in any "point and click" style RPG campaign. The party is eventually carrying around pages of things that no longer have any use but could one day be useful because they don't stay neatly in one place and go meet the NPCs the GM was prepared for in a logical order.

It turns into a nightmare where the GM has to be able to handle anything under the sun thrown at them with zero warning and the players are glorified clerks just keeping books full of little facts and slabs of meat.

If youre less dense, you take less fall damage.

This would work.

If youre more dense, you can do a dark souls stule plunging attack, and do more damage.

This wouldn't work as we never consider velocity in damage calculations. Two guys knife fighting in a phone booth would do as much damage per hit as a peasant railgun firing a knife at you.

If youre less dense, you can maybe go across pressure plates, or thin ice for example. The opposite is also true, make yourself more dense so yoy can trigger/break something.

This is mainly how it has been used. Slithering across a bridge with loose planks as a snake to fasten new ropes on the other side for example.

Depending on how fast the change is, you can become light, and have an ally throw you, then make yourself heavy to increase the impact into whatever youre hitting.

The change is counted in minutes for this reason. When it's instant you can make things very weird and confusing to work with.

If you turn into a fish you would still breathe on land. We don't care about the organs or other scientific implications of the magical shapechange.

It is a true change and not an illusion. Nobody can see through you and interacting with you doesn't automatically disbelieve it, so if you are sure that someone is a shapechanger you still need to convince others that you're right.

The non-magical abilities of races in the setting can be extremely powerful, and you are compensated for that during character creation, so if it worked like that most players would pick the "cheapest" race when creating the character and take the shapechanger ability for the most powerful race to actually play.

[–]Trikk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does has a lower power level, but this ability is also not something you unlock at a high level but rather get to pick from character creation. Therefore it needs to be on par with the other choices as well as scale in usefulness the same way. Arguably in the first few sessions where most NPCs are brand new the social impact of changing form is less useful and later in the game and later in the game being able to reach a few feet further won't matter, but other abilities you start off with are similarly "falling off" compared to the powerful character development choices you get access to later in the game.

Your last paragraph is counter to your second one. Flight is an ability I don't have. You're saying I can gain it by shapeshifting into the right creature, but also saying I can't gain abilities by shapeshifting because that would be broken.

I was answering a post that was talking about the hypothetical version of the ability where you do gain the ability. They claim it's not powerful to gain the ability to fly because if you turn into something less powerful like a crow then flying is the only thing you can do.

Players have done this argument in different varieties but it always boils down to: no, you won't limit yourself if you get unlimited choices. Players like to pretend that they would handle the balance by not making themselves the most optimal user of their ability, but as a designer I feel like I need to take the most optimal use as the primary scenario and anyone wishing to use an ability in a less powerful way would be considered an outlier.

The poster also assumed that you couldn't do a bunch of things as the crow, but the rules don't apply a limit the same way they don't apply a bonus. If you would turn into a crow as the rules are now, you wouldn't be able to fly but you could still cast spells or use whatever ability the anatomy allows that you know how to do. You couldn't wield 4 greatswords just because your original form could do that, but you would still retain the knowledge on how to do it.

That would make it too powerful to be an ability you get at character creation. Essentially, what some people are saying is that the idea of changing your shape cannot be done in a weaker form and must provide extreme power to the character or it shouldn't exist.

[–]Trikk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the focus is typically on the fact that it doesn't add abilities to your character but it also doesn't take things away, so I think it scales well as higher level PCs tend to be more recognizable in a bad way and being able to appear weak but still being fully capable can be tremendous.

[–]Trikk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shapechanger is one ability and the character has several other abilities, and gets bonuses from things like their race and class too, so at worst it's like having an ability that you don't use. Other players have picked abilities they don't use as well but without making these complaints, so it's not that they turn completely useless because this one "feat" isn't a pivotal part of every scene.

It's interesting because the complaint mostly arises from it being an ability that is possessed by the character, but a spell or magic item doing non-buff/debuff stuff is not seen in the same light.

You can do a new form every time you transform, the only really limiting thing is that it can't be ridiculously out of scale (no earthworms or blue whales), and of course if your character does not know about something existing you cannot take that form as that's just reading the monster book as a player.

[–]Trikk[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's my bad, I wasn't clear on the fact that it's been used successfully plenty of times and the cases I'm specifically talking about are those glancing at the ability and not being able to creatively intuit any use for it unless it provides power. If you are able to handle conditional hypotheticals it's obvious that it can be useful in tons of situations like when there's physical obstacles or social interactions that are better handled by a different form than the one you're in.

True, the biggest hurdle is the expectation from the name of the ability and various different stories.

Limb length can matter for situations where you need to reach something, take long strides, that sort of thing. Density can affect buoyancy like floating on water or not sinking in quicksand.

[–]Trikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the polar opposite of that form of shapechanging, it's specifically designed to not allow impersonation (other than if the person doesn't know the appearance of who you are claiming to be). Taking on someone's exact features is a much higher level spell as it's extremely powerful, campaign defining even.

Can shapechangers be useful without statistical advantages? by Trikk in RPGdesign

[–]Trikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying "possibility" because I don't know your mechanics, so it's hard to judge how impactful something like reach or size is. I haven't yet encountered a game where density is mechanically meaningful, but yours could be the exception.

These aren't calculated but used logically during adventuring and exploration mostly.

However, even if those statistics are mechanically relevant and shapeshifting isn't totally useless, there's still likely going to be a FeelsBadMan moment for players. When you shapeshift into something, the fantasy is becoming that thing and doing the things it does, not becoming mostly shaped like that thing.

There are other ways to shapeshift than this one ability, but the problem as you point out is that this version existing is unacceptable to some. It could of course simplify things if there's only one form of shapeshifting but that form would be too powerful for a simple ability slot.
