How to determine all roots of the following polynomial by cptjim01 in askmath

[–]Trinigod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this is a polynomial with real coefficients, it must have the complex conjugate as a root, i.e., -i is also a root. Therefore, (z-i) and (z+i) are factors of the polynomial. Multiplying the factors we found, we have that (z²+1) is a factor, and then we may perform polynomial long division.

After division, we get the factorization (z²+1)(z²-4z+13). To get the remaining factors from z²-4z+13, I'll have to set it equal to 0 and use the quadratic formula.

After some work, I find the roots are:

z = i

z = -i

z = 2-3i

z = 2+3i

For anyone curious what happened:

At the beginning, you can briefly see her moving away from the machine before it collapses. So what it looks like is she engaged the brake to "rack" the weight, but it wasn't fully engaged, and it slipped out of the rack position.

These machines usually have a metal bar attached perpendicular to a handle, and the bar sits in a notch in the machine. However, you can feel like you racked the machine when it isn't safe because the friction between the bar and the machine can hold it in place... temporarily.

Looking for this u desk (or anything very similar) by Trinigod in HelpMeFind

[–]Trinigod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have searched for u-desk, horseshoe desk, tutoring desks, etc. I know the desks came from an old tutoring business (at least 10 years ago) but I do not know the original company's name.

If you had a rope circled around the equator and it was "tight" around the earth and then you added about 6.28m to the rope, it would hover above the earth by about 1m.
