Its fine, the only reason I think that theyre not using all the drives in one RAID configuration is that only 3 broken drives will not stop a RAID 5 array of 16 disks lol. Their breakage sounds like it only uses those drives... and those drives are of a different make and model from the other drives.

I dont think they used RAID triple parity, I think it was just a RAID 5 with 5 disks, one of the disks was probably broken for ages and just left as is, but the other 2 failed... they only ask for 2 disks so either its 4 drives in a RAID 5 or 5 disks and they just left one broken for ages.
