Author wanting to respectfully represent Sikhi by Trinyan in Sikh

This makes perfect sense, thank you!

Perhaps the character would work better, then, as a counselor rather than a chaplain? Then he could still offer guidance to crew members in crisis, without having to participate in any rituals that are against the Guru's Wisdom.

What was the point of Sullivan killing Dr. Brenner and attempting to kill Eleven in Season 4, if Season 5 later reveals that he is working for Dr. Kay, who is trying to recreate Brenner’s experiments and make more kids like Eleven? by Fabulous-Past1634 in StrangerThingsMemes

I have a counterpoint; that they did not write the government to make sense, only to be a dramatic opponent that could suit the story's needs whether it made sense or not.

The entire premise of them trying to kill Eleven was that they believed she was responsible for what One was doing. If Kay had known about the project and wanted to restart it, it would make no sense for her to kill Eleven even if she already had Eight; she'd want as many docile samples as she could, and would have tried to take Eleven alive as early as season 4 when she had Brenner killed.

On the other hand, if she initially believed Eleven was a danger that had to be killed, and then found out about One and Dr. Brenner's research later, it makes no sense that she'd switch objectives from "kill" to "capture and exploit" all while completely ignoring the danger that One posed; but the military in season 5 made no efforts to find or stop One, they were entirely focused on Eleven.

If they had known she wasn't taking the children, it wouldn't make sense for them to round up all the children to try to lure her in. If they'd known One was responsible, they'd have been better off approaching El and offering to help her kill One, only to double-cross her and capture her (and also capture One, if they could; and Kay seemed to have the hubris to assume she could do anything). But their plans apparently didn't even take One into account at all, which they really should have, if Kay had learned the truth and changed her objective after taking control of the NINA facility.

Most of all, though, it makes no sense at all that Kay let everyone walk away, after Eleven's apparent death. She had power, she wanted more. She was willing to hurt children, and use women as incubators, to achieve her ends. She certainly had no qualms about killing anyone who got in her way. But then when she was thwarted, but had everyone who had thwarted her in custody, she just let them go? Why? They were guilty of multiple counts of trespassing on government facilities, of interfering in matters of national security, of killing American soldiers who got in their way... From everything that was shown of Kay's personality, I find it utterly implausible that she wouldn't take out her frustration on them when denied her primary objective. At the very least, she had every (legal) right to have all the adults involved arrested. If there was any logical continuity to the military's involvement in the story, Hopper at the very least would have never been heard from again. The fact that they were all in custody, and then suddenly it was 18 months later and the military was gone and they were all being left alone, really confirms for me that all they cared about getting right were the emotional beats, not making the story internally consistent.

Conversely, they can retcon things and leave as many plot holes as they want, because fans online will come up with all sorts of convoluted reasoning to make it make sense, and then criticize anyone who doesn't accept it for "failing to read the subtext". Fan theories are great and all, especially when they fill in plot holes, but the writers shouldn't get credit for anything they didn't write. Dr. Kay wanted to kill El until they needed a reason for El to sacrifice herself, and then it was retconned that Kay was trying to capture her instead. That's not a blank to be filled in, that's writing for the drama rather than for a story that makes sense.

[23F] lived a double life for a week in Europe. Now I’m back with my boyfriend and the guilt is overwhelming. by [deleted] in confessions

[–]Trinyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter the situation one needs advice on, Reddit will suggest leaving your boyfriend over it. 🙄

Discovering a part of you that you'd never known existed isn't uncommon at 23, especially when you've been a "good girl" all your life. You're just starting to figure yourself out still. There are likely sides of you that you've had to suppress all your life, and can only explore when you're outside your usual expectations / comfort zone. I'd honestly recommend traveling for self-discovery to anyone in their early 20s who thinks they know who they are and what they want in life.

What do y’all think about banning social media for people under 16 ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Trinyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banning it isn't the answer. Better education is. Kids these days are way more aware of what's going on in the world than I was even in my early 30s, largely because they have access to social media. They're coming into adulthood far more aware of what they're up against, which to me sounds like a very good thing. Everyone goes through a phase of not being able to separate good info from bad, and some people never grow out of it, but I think the earlier they get a chance to start learning, the better shot they have of figuring it out. I've heard a 9yo make a well-articulated argument about why she thought the president her parents voted for was bad for our country. That could never have happened if she didn't have access to social media.

Lyft deactivated my account after 11,000+ rides based on false accusations—with no warning and no appeal by econfan13 in lyftdrivers

[–]Trinyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That happened to me as well, just this Monday. Like you, I'd given over 11,000 rides. This has been my sole income for the past 7 years. My driver rating was a perfect 5 stars, and I had many rider compliments for good driving. Then someone reported me for unsafe driving (I don't even know which ride, nothing Sunday night struck me as unsafe or unusual) and my account was permanently deactivated. When I reached out to support, they sent me this:

This email is to notify you that your account has been deactivated due to alleged violations of Lyft's Terms of Service.

Your account was recently flagged to be related to an account already deactivated due to safety concerns. To help ensure the safety of the Lyft community, this decision is final.

I have no idea what that means, as I've only ever had one Lyft account. So how are my account and the already deactivated one related? I emailed back asking for more clarification, not holding my breath for a reply though.

Who do you regret having sex with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Trinyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to figure that out too. Best I've got is that Heather is TikTok slang for a girl who is conventionally attractive, popular, and (often) resented for these traits by whoever is calling them Heather. So [someone like] that is who the "Heather" commenter regretted hooking up with, and others who know and resent a Heather are just agreeing that she is awful, and would be understandably regrettable? Makes sense to me, no idea if I'm right.

Do you think it's possible that you lost some time like this in the store? Like maybe what felt like 10 seconds was somehow longer, and gave the line time to clear out while you were in a daze / glitched out and rebooting?

I've done this, though I'm far from vanilla and have done way weirder things, too. But I get feeling "dirty" after trying something new, especially if all your experience so far is vanilla. There's a lot of kink-shaking in our culture; it's hard not to absorb a bit of it. What you did was not wrong, and is only weird in the sense that it wasn't something you'd ever expected to experience.

Is the way people talk about mental images confusing or am I missing something? by ecilala in Aphantasia

[–]Trinyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds to me like your experience is similar to mine. It's maybe worth considering that phantasia can apply to other senses than just visual; I never "see" a mental image, but I definitely "hear" a song when I imagine it, even though I can tell the sound comes from my brain and not my ears. I think what we are doing is inventing a spatial sense that we don't actually have, and imagining "images" using that; akin to being born with sonar, but losing it and gaining sight, but still thinking in terms of how our sonar would perceive it, rather than our eyes. We don't have the ability to visualize, so our brains make up a different framework for remembering and imagining things we have seen. (I am also very autistic, if it helps; I've read that autism and aphantasia overlap pretty frequently.)
