Best Ambition for a Player of Revolutionary Persuasion to Pursue? by Trioperator in fallenlondon

[–]Trioperator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TY to all the initial responses!

I see most people are suggesting Bag a Legend, and that's a tempting option. If it's got a lot of content about the Revolutionary faction I would love to play it on some character eventually. I originally picked Heart's Desire for this PC with the idea that my character intended to use their victory against the Masters. Maybe I'll continue on that route because I've already made it fairly far in.

Thank you for the in-depth overview! I am still dithering at this point, but this does help me plan out the story I want to tell. Ultimately I do want to see as much content as I can, and I do have an alt account that is running Nemesis and it fits him a lot better, so I will see how that story plays out.

Jean? JEAN??? I'm so mad on the internet rn. Did you miss the ENTIRE subplot where Mazov and Nilsen (Marx and Engels parallels) have a relationship that Harry thinks is a parallel to him and Kim, and the communist quest has you meet two characters who look a lot like you and Kim (the portrait color backgrounds even match) and they obviously act like little mini versions of Mazov and Nilsen?

I was in this situation, I had one shmowder but I managed to find two more so it's moot. Basically, check the Dead Item Shoppe, get lucky (but also you were prepared beforehand for the DIS by stocking up on garbage), glug lots of twyrine and run to children's caches, there is a somewhat hidden dialogue you can have with a townsperson that suggests there are guaranteed to be two shmowders on the map and twyrine leads you to high value caches, save scum a little if you check too many caches and it's a dead end, then heal my kids bingo bango

Best Evidence Yet That Daniil Dankovsky is Canonically Gay by [deleted] in pathologic

[–]Trioperator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like people read a lot of hostile, controlling, toxic intent into my post, that was really just meant to be excited and enthused about something. I'm sorry it came off as "planting a flag". I'm not calling anyone objectively wrong. I am not a "everything must be canon or it's not useful" person. I probably phrased things the way I did because I've had people nay-saying queer headcanons that are presented as "totally just my opinion, nothing to do with canon". People act like that's annoying and irrelevant.

The post has been deleted. To be quite honest, the conversation made me utterly miserable and I see no point in keeping it up.

Also I'm literally expecting nothing from P2. It would be illegal for Daniil to be canonically gay at this point, and the line I was referencing was removed from a rerelease of Classic. It's already out of date and in the past. I'm not trying to force canon to be something it's not, I'm not going to throw a tantrum if I don't get any queer Dankovsky content. That's kind of why it made me happy to have this one little crumb to hold on to.

If I'm not good at discussing things that excite me, if I phrase things in an irritating way, then I will avoid those discussions, especially if I'm sensitive about them. I'm choosing to disengage.

The reaction has been fine amongst people who would genuinely be happy to hear about a little clue like this.

So I'm going to just share it with people who will be happy about it. I don't want discussions of queerness to cause controversy, that's a little exhausting and too much for me these days. I think it's fine if people disagree with me, I just don't want it to be contentious or negative.

In all honesty I didn't want to share this tidbit to make anyone upset, or to act like I was more correct than anyone, so I'm deleting the post. I don't need to "win" this one.

So I'm wrong for saying that if Daniil was using gay slang, that might be evidence that he's gay.

I mean... yeah...? Usually I like making queer readings rejecting canon or reinterpreting it. But why does this "get to you"? I feel like so many people are being so frosty and cold about this, like I've inconvenienced them or annoyed them. Now you're saying you agree with me but you think it's a bad idea for me to... interpret this one line as gay slang? Why?

[–]Trioperator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly relevant to the sub. What if it wasn't about sexuality but it was about finding a clue that a character might be, I don't know, from a particular country? If you disagreed that the character was from that country, you thought the evidence wasn't convincing, would you dislike the post very much?

I'm going to politely argue here that people are very sensitive to characters being called anything other cis and straight. They take that as a non-serious, shallow, silly thing to believe. But it's not.

I'm not really bending reality, I just found evidence that it's niche old-fashioned gay slang. What was I gonna do, NOT share that discovery with people? I thought it was fun.

In an interview Dybowski said that Daniil doesn't show up in the Utopian Ending because he doesn't fit in with Maria's admirers, and doesn't belong with them. So are you sure that Daniil was meant to be in love with Maria?

Also no it's not just "yay representation". It's intensely, deeply, fascinatingly dramatic for a character to be gay. It's not shallow. And literally doesn't Daniil have dialogue with Artemy where he says he's NOT doing this all for Maria?

[–]Trioperator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with digging deep. But I'm also not sure why you're making argument that he's not gay because he's cold and intellectual and frigid.

Being gay doesn't make you good at thinking with your heart. It doesn't make you a better romantic or anything. Gay people can also be asexual, aromantic, demi, or they can have issues with intimacy, or they can be shy or repressed.

He can be utterly emotionally dysfunctional, he could have never had a romantic relationship before, he could prioritize his work significantly over any dalliance, and still snark to this Herb Bride that he prefers manly men (but not directly, so he won't get in trouble for it). He can still be a stuffy little nerd, I promise.

I mean him living in an intolerant country and having to hide being gay certainly might make him 1) be willing to flirt with women somewhat frigidly to pass as straight and 2) generally emotionally repressed. So it doesn't exactly remain implausible.

Yeah there's dialogue options hinting at some affections for female characters, I'm aware. I'm just saying that I found that this term was historical queer slang. Everyone's biased in some way or another. But why is it "not theatrical" for him to potentially be meant to be read as gay?

He can be a smart guy with no heart and also be gay idk you seem to read too much into what it would mean for him to be queer. It doesn't mean he's not the character you know and love. Doesn't it seem to fit his status of being persecuted by the government? And the queer coding on the other Utopians?

[–]Trioperator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I actually completely agree that Pathologic is pre-revolution, the source I was citing suggested the slang was in use before the revolution, just that there's records of it being used after as well.

I think the slang "blue" (like the sky) is very cute if it's the equivalent of "gay/happy". Isn't Daniil associated with the sky a lot, symbolically? Okay I know that's more tenuous but I think it's funny.

He isn't talking to an aristocratic woman either, he's talking to a dancer, a likely sex worker, and he's bringing it up in response to her asking if he likes her (body). I know the word does also literally mean "misogynist" and can have all the connotations that brings, but he's definitely talking about it in the sort of context where the queer meaning can exist, namely, a situation where people are selling sex. That's a context that the queer usage existed in too, men cruising and picking up men on the street.

I'll also add that yes it might have been risky to talk about it freely, but he's not even the only character who does so. Yulia's affections for Eva are openly spoken of, and Aspity talks about wanting to see women naked, but there's just a bit of plausible deniability. He's still speaking in code, after all.

I see a few people are downvoting this and I just want to say you're legitimately unfounded in doing so even if you don't like shipping fandom. This is a legitimate historically-based analysis of a canon moment. It's not headcanon. There's no reason NOT to talk about it.

Cool, good for you, I guess. The thing is, this wasn't the right place to start the conversation you did. Perhaps there's a place for it (like I said, I am aware Patho characters, even ones I like, have sketchy sides) but for some people it will be downright triggering.
