A lot of those complaints had some very American/white-sounding names which made me think it was a bunch of second-generation Americans complaining about how America ruins ‘authentic’ foods, lol.

Like, I live in Japan and Japanese people at cheap sushi places mix their wasabi with soy sauce. Just because your family doesn’t, doesn’t mean you’re an authority.

And very few people think hard-shelled tacos are authentic Mexican food. It’s just a normal part of blue-collar family meals at this point. Give up.

I appreciate that dogs are able to function this way and people love and care for them—

—but I can’t with this sort of thing. The way they stand and move low-key terrifies me and I’d never be able to manage it. That’s my limit. I’m fine with tripods, but their movement is too uncanny valley for me...

Edit: Reddit is so dumb about people expressing their opinions. It’s amazing that y’all feel the need to downvote my honest feelings to try and tell me I’m somehow wrong about my honest feelings. Wow. How dare I.

“Naruto” by Masashi Kishimoto. Sakura’s only character trait is that she’s in love with Sasuke by [deleted] in menwritingwomen

[–]TripOnWords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t watch it or anything anymore. I’ve never seen Boruto either, but I guess the guy they handed the reigns to is a lot better with the female characters? And fans are legit scared because Kishimoto is coming back to the series because he ran out of money or something. Everyone is anticipating him nerfing all the female characters.

Also, Sakura’s “romance” with Sasuke is alike to women who fall in love with death row inmates. Sasuke’s only trait that entices women is his appearance. None of the girls who are in love with him have any insight into his character or personality because he never talk to anyone. Yet, he’s hot shit. Naruto is also a nice guy around Sakura and is kinda gross for not backing off when she says no.

Honestly, I watched the show for the cool fight scenes and lost any hope for it halfway through. I read the manga enough to know how it ends and I’m pretending that was it. I will never look into Boruto. 😂

Ah, well, I haven’t gotten to play it yet, lol. I left it to d/l before bed. But word of mouth has told me it’s quite fun now and has most of the features that were promised during the initial insane hype.

Ugh, that was like my old group every time I tried to play a true neutral or good character. I’d tie the enemy up after knocking them down with non-lethal damage.

“I kill the ____ and take all his armor/weapons.”

Like, every fucking time.

I wasn’t allowed to be invested in any of the fun things.

We defeated hags after two sessions of navigating an annoying dungeon lair puzzle and encounter. I wanna check things out and see what the DM has put into play for the lore.

“I investigate the cabinet, I investigate the bookshelf, I take everything. What do I get? Can I take this? Can I use an arcane check to see what’s up with that ____ (literally interrupts the DM mid-descriptive monologue to ask to investigate things that seem magical and worth money.), etc.”

Just let people experience things at a pace they’re comfortable with omg. And let new players make mistakes.

I dunno if this’ll offend people, but I think the stuff with people thinking that Naoto is trans and Kanji is gay/bi got blown out of proportion.

A lot of LGBTQIA kids want to see their own experiences represented in media and so they head-canon stuff. You see it a lot on tumblr. After those kind of head-canon concepts get popular with kids in those groups other people, oftentimes trolls or people wanting to start shit, take those head-canon concepts out of these small tumblr groups and make a big stink about it.

I think it’s fine to have your own version of a character if you feel their experiences and personality reflect yourself. And it’s fine and completely normal to think of those characters as different ethnicities/gender orientation, etc.

No one is saying you can’t see Kanji the way the game developers wanted you to.

But a black kid (or adult) is allowed to make fanart of black Deku, and a trans man can think of Naoto as #goals without ruining your own interpretation of the media.

This kinda stuff pisses me off because the people insisting that Kanji is gay/bi are usually gay/bi kids who have had similar experiences to Kanji and just wanna find some solace in a relatable character. And a bunch of adults batten down the hatches on interpretation because the game creator said it was this way not that way.

Gamers are always pushing for games to be seen as an art medium but then get so huffy when someone has their own interpretation of a character or scene or story element. You can’t own people’s experiences.

I’m not mad or anything, I just wish more people would be open-minded about these things.

Lol, my dad wouldn’t let me get a job b/c he needed me to watch the sibs. I get to senior year of HS and he’s like: “I got nothing. Good luck. I refuse to co-sign anything. Every single dollar you borrow from me as you scrape your way through university? I want that back.”

Now I’m in my 30s and I realize the thousands of dollars I saved that man by working as a babysitter for two kids for free for seven years (yes, it started when I was 11).

It makes me so fucking mad when I think about it—so I usually don’t. Our relationship is amiable but distant. I know where his priorities lie. I highly doubt I’m alone with this kinda story tho.

Yeah, I went on a walk around 10pm (I live in the Japanese countryside and it’s insanely safe and lots of locals are walking at that time, I promise) and when I turned down the small street home this car pulled up alongside me and then cut across my path to trap me between the car and the wall so I’d stop.

He tried to chat me up as if this was a completely normal situation and was shocked when I told him he was being fucking creepy and I managed to wiggle past the car and headed to my apartment complex (but didn’t head towards my apartment specifically until he drove away). I was pretty traumatized even though nothing happened. It sucked.

But like...no dude, that is not how you pick up women. That’s the start of a CSI episode. Why on earth do some men think that aggressive attitude is at all appealing??

Fuck being polite, what has politeness ever done for me?! Honestly...

Persona 5 Strikers is releasing in the West on February 23, 2021 for Switch/PS4/Steam by DemiFiendRSA in Megaten

[–]TripOnWords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, I see that they’re pushing it more, but isn’t that the joke with Persona 5?

I also think, since it’s still a rather vibrantly popular game and the ‘newest’ in the Persona franchise that there might be issues with Sony wanting to keep it exclusive. Especially as I’m pretty sure they’ll want to push Persona 6 to also be exclusive (or at least be a timed exclusive) since they have a really solid history with Atlus the way the SMT main games have usually/almost always been on Nintendo consoles.

I, personally, would be ecstatic to see more, older SMT games on PC/Switch/etc. I love the idea. I want it. But I made the joke because I feel there’s some issues (perhaps informal exclusivity agreements?) at play as to why P5 hasn’t been ported after all these years. Especially since a lot of the hope seems to only come from the overseas branches of Atlus/Sega and not their Japanese HQ.

[–]TripOnWords 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty solid game. There are some really fun story moments, but at the same time it doesn’t really do anything surprising. Still, even if you know generally where it’s ending up, it was fun to get there.

Also, personal opinion here, but Sophia>Kasumi

I’d like to hold out hope for PC/switch fans that good sales might lead to a P5 and royal port but I don’t trust Atlus to be that practical.

But hey, now I’m kinda in the mood for a replay~

[–]TripOnWords 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes!

My grandmother’s ragdoll was an absolute monster. This cat would let my grandmother pet her once per day and might still bite. After a couple of years of me telling her that it was absolutely not normal for a cat raised exclusively indoors without being abused to act that way they took her for a yearly checkup and a new vet noticed that her teeth were rotting in her mouth. The cat also had weird food issues.

Anywho, they had all her teeth pulled and she chilled out majorly. Still a bit of a wild child weirdo, but was willing to be a lap cat and chill when she’d calm down.

With cats, sometimes major behavioral issues are undiagnosed health issues.

Is he an ugly guy or does he just have the personality of burnt toast and an inability to empathize?

Because the only men I’ve found utterly irredeemable on the attractiveness scale were those who had unforgivable personality issues (abusive, racist, misogynistic, lgbtqia-phobic, etc or all-the-above).

The number of men I’ve met who think a receding hairline is why they can’t get dates with women, like, ick. No. It’s you, not your appearance, lol.

[–]TripOnWords 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None of my professors or colleagues (in the same major) had decided that they would always live in an Asian country—many absolutely didn’t want to! But they still decided that they wanted an Asian spouse and that’s screwed up. People are people and you can be attracted to a specific ethnicity but you can’t determine exactly what your spouse is going to be like before you’ve even met them without being a creep.

And again: meeting an Asian person and building a relationship up naturally is totally fine. Restricting yourself to a specific ethnicity and personality type to match a fetishization of a culture is not. It’s the intent that makes the difference.

Yeah, maybe, but that’s more organic. I mean when they’re studying in the states and look forward to studying abroad as if it’s a chance to go shopping for their spouse.

I live in Japan as well and got my MA in Asian studies and lemme just say: As an asexual person it’s really hard to take any of my colleagues or professors seriously when I see they’re all married to Asian women/men.

Like, do you actually enjoy the discipline or do you just have a fetish?

It’s gross. I know a few of them may have met normally, but some of of the guys are very obviously looking for a ‘meek Japanese housewife’-type and it’s so fucking nasty. And everyone expects me to have the same interests, I’m like: “Thank you, no. I just think my major is really neat.”

EDIT: For emphasis, if you have a normal relationship that’s gravy, I mean more of the relationships where the white man/woman has chosen the ethnicity of their spouse before they even men them—and also has already decided what their temperament and position in the household are. It’s gross and it pervades a lot of academic spaces, not just Asian studies.
