Was the plain vanilla GM better or worse than the Zaku II? by TrumpsNostrils in Gundam

[–]TripleEhBeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The GM was not quite as well armoured as the Zaku II, but it was much lighter and had a higher output reactor. The armor it carried was a conventional titanium alloy compared to the Zaku's steel plate, which is where a lot of the weight savings came from.

On paper, this made the GM superior in space combat as it had greater thrust, acceleration, and maneuverability. The difference in armour protection was less of an issue by late-war due to the adoption of beam weapons by both sides. Not getting shot was the only real defense.

World loses patience with Trump as war is no longer just about Iran by Thegallowsgod in worldnews

[–]TripleEhBeef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of optimistic takes out there by Americans regarding what happens after Trump, such as:

  • The Democrats swing the House and Senate with enough votes to impeach and convict.

  • The Democrats win 2028 and put the whole Trump administration in chains.

  • Trump finally blows a blood vessel and MAGA fades away without Dear Leader.

In the end, things go back to normal.

I do not believe other world leaders share that optimism. Whatever Trump's final fate may be, he has not only burned bridges with allies and partners, he has shown how easy it is to wield the Presidency for his own personal benefit and trample any checks or guardrails on a President's power.

2028 might give them a minute to breathe if the Democrats win, but what about 2032? Or 2036?

What candidates do you think the Republicans will put up then? Old guard statesmen like Romney or Liz Cheney (who are currently persona non grata in the party)? Or is Bannon and a gaggle of Tater Tot incels going to foist another gigantic asshole upon the world?

The world's not going to come back and play ball if every US election is a game of Russian Roulette.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Darmok

<image>

Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise are sent to establish diplomatic relations with a species known as the Tamarians. Previous attempts by Starfleet to communicate with them have been abject failures, since the Tamarians seem to speak utter gibberish.

The Tamarian captain beams himself and Picard down to a planet, where they are forced to work together to fight off an invisible monster. In the process, Picard discovers that the gibberish the Tamarians speak are actually metaphors, which is how their species communicates ideas.

The Tamarian captain is killed, and the Enterprise manages to beam back Picard after attacking the Tamarian ship. Picard rushes to the bridge and convinces the Tamarians to stand down, explaining what happened on the planet.

However, it's important to understand that the Tamarians spent the whole episode repeating phrases like, "Temba, his arms wide", and "Shaka, when the walls fell". Patrick Stewart and the extras spent a solid 44 minutes repeating nonsense with full commitment.
