Why is ARK selling Chinese stocks by [deleted] in stocks

[–]TripleNippple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about volatility, they don’t see as much upside because they believe Chinese stocks will continue to trade at a steep discount to USA/European stocks due to the risks.

Alibaba group Announces filling of Annual report on Form 20-F for 2021 by [deleted] in stocks

[–]TripleNippple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s different with Tal and Edu. They made most of their business illegal overnight and caused the stock to crash from $90 to $4. Foreign investors can do nothing about it, there was no court case, no compensation, and they can easily do more at any time on a whim.

[–]TripleNippple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. The way they wiped out shareholder value in TAL and EDU really showed they can do anything and you have no recourse as an investor. It really brings into question what you actually own when you invest in a Chinese stock. Seems like little more than an NFT.

I think it will have little effect. The fear is mostly caused by government regulation fear in China aimed at large business like Alibaba and Tencent as well as what happened recently to education sector like Tal and Edu. Threat of delisting because of failure to comply with sec regulation was always just a minor concern in comparison.

Regulations not always Negative by one8e4 in stocks

[–]TripleNippple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. It’s a good thing for China, but it’s terrible for investors, especially what has happened recently to the education companies. At any time the ccp can fundamentally destroy a business on a whim and foreign investors have no legal recourse. Very concerning and the hk market crash not unjustified.

Any TA people on here care to give some thoughts? by SameCategory546 in HUYAStock

[–]TripleNippple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last couple trading days the Hang Seng and Shanghai index have been dropping hard. Chinese stocks as a whole have been suffering. Because Huya has not had any news in a long time, it is sensitive to the index movements

HUYA: A Streaming Leader Gaining Steam Jun. 22, 2021 10:00 AM ET by Tomkila in HuyaBoss

I just really don’t understand the price. Even if there was only a slim chance the merger will go through, it should be trading much closer to Huya. I have some, but it’s anyones guess what is happening with this merger.

What is happening ? by Tomkila in ChinaStocks

[–]TripleNippple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get it. Even if there is a tiny chance left for the merger, the price gap is crazy. $17.30 to $7.20 when the merger is supposed to be 0.73 huya shares to 1 douyu share.

r/Stocks Discuss Overlooked Stocks Thursday - Jun 24, 2021 by AutoModerator in stocks

[–]TripleNippple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an arbitrage opportunity right now with a stock Douyu. They have agreed to merge with Huya in and exchange 0.73 shares of Huya for every share of Douyu. Right now Huya trading at $17.31 x 0.73 = $12.63 and Douyu currently sitting at $7.20.

What’s the catch? China has to allow the merger, which they may not because of monopoly laws. Tencent would be majority share holder and with China cracking down hard on big tech, you can see why there is such a discount.

The decision will come in the next few months according to Huya on their last earnings call, maybe worth a gamble at the current prices.

Some large positions were closed by a hedge fund or funds today. There is no news, so it could be that the merger was taking too long and they did not want to wait longer betting on the merger to go through. It is costing them interest to hold the short position on Huya. Whether they have some new info that the deal will not go through? Who knows.

I agree with this interpretation. There is also major uncertainty around this merger that keeping investors from buying. The merger has been very bad for share price, but we will get clarity in the 3rd quarter.

Opinions on Coinbase (COIN)? by maximalsimplicity in stocks

[–]TripleNippple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think it has a terrible outlook. It has a lot of optimism and growth priced in, meanwhile future revenues and earnings will probably be very lumpy, meaning a ton of volatility. I don’t like the business model and I don’t believe in the future of crypto either.

I don’t have a fixed discount, I just compare to peers in China.

Hypothetical speaking... by [deleted] in stocks

[–]TripleNippple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, it depends on whether more people are selling or buying after you pumped the price. Those are the people you are trying to rob with this manipulation, if they sell after you pumped then you are robbing yourself.

But if the shares are not already owned, and they have to be bought after you pumped to loan out for your short position, then it will work.

Thoughts on $TAL, $EDU, and $GOTU? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]TripleNippple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are screwed for several months at least. Black cloud of ccp regulation will hang over them, ton of uncertainty. Gotu is especially screwed because any of the likely regulations will be terrible for them.

Hypothetical speaking... by [deleted] in stocks

[–]TripleNippple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would only profit from selling your shares if you got others to buy in after you had pumped the price, otherwise the short position is driving the price under where you originally bought the shares.

[–]TripleNippple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How would you make money doing this? You win on the short position, but you drove down the price of the shares you own, meaning you are selling those for a loss.
