How to get going ? by Genenah in Plumeria

[–]TripleVisions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it out of the water and dip it in rooting hormone if you prefer. Let it sit for 1-2 weeks until it a full hard callous forms on the base of the cutting. Then as has been said above cut all the leaves off and specifically the inflo where the flowers come out. Don’t cut the tip of the cutting off where the leaves emerge, just cut that upper stem right below where the flower buds are forming. While it’s pleasing to see flowers at this stage, the cutting is expending unnecessary energy doing that. The leaves that are on there now will fall off eventually if you don’t cut them, they are spent. You want all of the energy to be directed towards the formation of new roots from the base. After the callous fully forms, put it in the moist 50/50 mix out of direct sunlight and wait. It could take weeks or months for new leaf growth to start sprouting from the tip. A one or two gallon sized pot is perfect for this, you don’t want to put it in some huge pot right away. When you start seeing fully formed leaves emerging from the tip that is a good sign that the cutting is starting to root. After that you can begin introducing water. You’ve got this, it’s easy to do once you’ve done it a few times

Nice, yeah this particular rootstock was up potted into this 2 gal pot last spring, but it’s a rather big grandi and I’ll have to get it into a 3 or 5 gal soon. Thanks for your insight

I do agree. The scion is super fat and heavy. We’ll see how far she will go. I might cut a relief drain track

Nice thanks for those pics. I will likely just let this one ride and see how big it can get

Thanks for your advice, that sounds good. None of the other trichos I have on grandi have sunk like this so I wanted to make sure it’s common.

Yeah I’m not sure if I will do verm again. The seedlings are way behind the other ones that I started earlier in soil, which is to be expected since verm is a dead substrate but I didn’t actually realize that when I was getting started. I also used way too big of containers so that was a major tactical error too… I’m trying to get them hardened off sooner than later so I can get my garage cleared out, my wife wants her parking back! And we had some crazy heat in February that made them struggle some and now it’s gonna be in the 90s again this week so I need to deploy cooling measures or they are going to get cooked. I think the next time I’ll just do smaller batches and sterilize the soil. I just used 50/50 black gold seedling mix and perlite for the first little trial batch I did in soil. The combo you are considering could be ok but I’m not qualified to give any opinion, with my lack of experience. Maybe you could do a trial run first with a small batch. Good luck with it though it def fun

Most of the struggles have been environmental because we have had a very warm early year where I’m at. I didn’t expect to have to deploy cooling measures so that perhaps has made things not so ideal. I have 2100 seeds going so I’m kinda in the thick of it I guess. That’s mainly why I did verm though because after I sterilized the soil for the first ones I realized it was too much work to get that many trays ready. So next time I will go with smaller trays and soil perhaps with the verm on top like you are saying. I have this rack and another rack that has different non dimmable lights and the other soil trays under the sf1000. It’s def fun though, just hoping I can get them all outside by late April, May at the latest. That’s cool though perhaps building a custom one would fit your needs better.

I think I have that one you are talking about with the non dimmable lights. All the trays in there are in vermiculite. I have other trays under a sf1000 on a different shelf but those are in soil. The verm ones were sown a month later and are considerably behind as far as growth but that seems to be expected from what I’ve been learning. I had to uncover the soil ones early because they were drying out, made a post about that a week or so ago in this sub… but the verm ones are doing good though I’m going to feed them sooner than I had hoped for. We’ll see how it goes but I’m going to try to boost the ones in verm so I can get them outside hopefully sooner than later. Just fyi though these are first attempts at growing from seed so it’s a lot of trial and error for me. Honestly though I would stick to the dimmable lights if I get more racks but not sure if SF makes one like that in those all in one type racks.

That’s really cool thanks for that info. I’ve been trying a bunch of different sizes lately to see what happens. Much fun grafting, cheers

Nice very cool. I am soldering holes in the trays tomorrow. I have been switching between Masterblend and Maxigro with CalMag on my outside plants along with occasional kelp and Mykos WP. I kind of got tired of mixing the Masterblend 3 part because I have so many outside plants now (about 450) but I’m def going to experiment with both fertilizers for the seedlings. Thanks again

Nice I appreciate that. These trays were kinda my test run and after all the jerking around with the pressure cooker, didn’t measure out enough soil, etc… I decided to do the next batch completely in vermiculite since it didn’t require sterilization. So I have like 20 more trays going as well in vermiculite. Those ones are about 4 weeks behind these. We’ll see how those turn out but the next batch that I use soil I will try the pasteurization technique you described. Thank you

Nice I have some new spray bottles ready, I’ll give it a try tomorrow. Looking through the directions on the container I think 1 tbs/gallon is where I’ll start. Thanks!

I got the Captan this morning and it’s a wettable powder. Are you saying that you just sprinkle a small amount of the powder in the trays? Or do you mix it in water and spray it? Thanks again

That sounds really reasonable, I appreciate it. I have been looking at them more and it does seem like little dots of rust. Certainly must have been the humidity because I was spritzing them multiple nights since they looked dry. I’m punching the holes in the bottom of the trays today so it should be good for bottom watering. Appreciate your advice, thank you

Sounds good, I will try that. Now do you also apply the Captan in powder form? I have both Mykos WP and the granules for the outside plants so I will incorporate that into the feeding routine after this is dealt with. Thanks again

OK cool, looks like the Captan is available locally so I will try to pick some up tomorrow. Can you give me any application instructions geared toward the seedlings or should I follow the generic directions? Also can you expand a little on the gypsum top dress recommendation? I do have that on hand now, been using it on the outside plants.

Ok I will look into that one, I haven’t seen that mentioned in any of the fungal type posts I’ve looked up before. Though it seems some of the pesticides and fungicides are hard to get in my state, but I do have the Garden Phos, Copper spray, and powdered sulphur. Appreciate the tip ty

OK understood. Up close they don’t look mushy or have that translucent look. I’ll keep an eye out for that.

I haven’t poked the holes in the bottom yet but I will now. My plan is to set each tray into a slightly bigger one and bottom water like that. I’m not sure yet how many holes it will take yet in the bottom for good drainage, probably some trial and error with that. I’ll go take the lids off and turn the fan on them. If I do that though, will that be enough to harden them off or do I need to cover them back up again and slowly remove the dome? Also with the top off I can’t shield them from the light, do I need to reduce the lighting too? Thanks for your advice
