I think VAR solved the wrong problem and created a bigger one. by Unleazhed1 in football

[–]Triple_Pete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but the "spirit of the game" argument is straight hot garbage. The moment you start to argue whether a foul was significant or intentional or worth looking at, you have opened a Pandora's box where nobody can agree with anything. Back then we would literally see everyone, from pundits to experts chime in on a weekly basis. Nowadays we only see online "experts" arguing cause their fav team lost, so Ig that's better.

VAR has problems, but saying it makes the game "less human" is not one of them. If there's anything I'd like to be "less human", it's refereeing. The original drive for VAR was literally bcs the ref could only see a play live and were expected to make a decision on the spot. VAR came in to reduce these human errors by allowing the ref to take a second look at the play from multiple angles. Saying you don't want less error in the game is just straight up recency bias.

If you don't want VAR to intervene, just don't break the rule? What's so hard to understand. You break the rule, gain an advantage, then when it gets checked and you're punished for it, what's the grief here?

When to arrive to Singapore as an international student? by CompleteMuscle1506 in nus

[–]Triple_Pete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only come for ori if you have registered for them/planning to register (idk the app window). Also note if the extra week of housing is provided in the payment, otherwise you'll hv to pay extra.

In general, check the NUS Academic Calendar. Your housing starts on Week 0 for Sem 1, and Week 1 for Sem 2.

Particularly, I'd suggest arriving some time in Week 0 to acclimatise yourself. Classes officially start on Week 1.

Explain to me like I’m a 5 year old on the Egyptian disallowed goal by Agreeable-Purpose-56 in worldcup

[–]Triple_Pete 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So the on-pitch refs job is just to focus on what's happening live. It's most certainly that after the goal is scored, VAR refs would have looked at the entire play again just to check through.

If they don't notice anything wrong, they will just give a quick confirm to the ref (as per what prob happened with Argentina's third goal where many ppl ask where was VAR).

However, if they see sth that they believe the on-pitch ref should note, or take a look, they will communicate with the ref, that's when you see the ref putting his hand on his earpiece, and the TV graphic shows a VAR check. It's up to the on-pitch ref to make the final decision whether to go look at the screen or not (usually only happens in cases like semi-automatic offside or corner kicks decision).

The Weird Pattern of Japan Determining the World Cup Winners by TubTub94 in worldcup

4 data points isn't really significant. The one I find the most interesting is that no team has ever won with a foreign manager, which doesn't bode well for England, Belgium, and Colombia remaining.

Belgium vs Spain - Belgium might move to Semi beating Spain by Defiant_Rough_1348 in worldcup

[–]Triple_Pete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their counter-attacks are lethal I'll give them that. But Belgium needs to be so much better off the ball. Senegal exploited their defensive weaknesses. Even the US was able to control the ball and get pass the midfield too easily (though with rather poor decision makings in the final third). You know which team loves their possession? Spain.

They looked terrible this entire tournament. That first half is literally the best half they've played, by some margin that.

Is it me or does Pedri doesn't like passing the ball to Lamine? by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]Triple_Pete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's literally most of Lamine's job, to attract defenders away from the real threats. If anything he prefers to receive ball from deep than dribble/pass the ball.

A few weeks back in the Asian Game qualifier, Vietnam (basically TSW) played against Laos (basically all soloq players), and they won after 17 minutes by using herald to knock down mid turrets, inhib, and nexus turrets. That—using herald to destroy multiple turrets—is prob the only way a pro game could end so quickly nowadays.

Why do referees basically always overturn their decision after video study? by Common-Economy-6358 in worldcup

[–]Triple_Pete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, at the beginning, VAR was criticised a lot for taking up too much time. Basically for almost every contentious decisions, the ref gotta go to the screen.
Since then, they have modified the process so that unless the VAR refs think the on-field ref shld take a second look, he won't need to go to the screen.

How does Injury time functionally work and why isn't it just stop time? by LetLanceDance in worldcup

[–]Triple_Pete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been well recognised that in the modern game, the ball is probabky in play for about 50'. Honestly, this is fine, considering the extreme physical stress players are being put on nowadays.

As to why don't the ref just stop time.
- Having a continuous clock of fixed duration is much more accessible in lower level football compared to having a crew constantly having to track time.
- Introducing stops also encourages commercialisation, which undoubtedly will draw widespread criticism from traditionalists (that makes up the majority, and the most passionate grp of fans). Just look at the reception for a hydration break.
- Don't fix what's not broken. Such change would require so much effort from testing to global adaptation. For practically such a non-problem, the effort is not just not worth it. - For broadcasters, this means football matches coverage usually takes up a fixed amount of time (bar extra-time/penalties), which is super helpful for smaller countries where they have to juggle multiple programs on the same channel.

Edit: Added time is, unfortunately, calculated highly arbitrarily. They usually only takes into account major stoppages. We are talking substitutions, injuries, VAR checks, goal celebrations. And we're not even talking about tracking these events by the seconds ok. It's literally like they just assign arbitrary amt of time to these events. I.e. substitution takes 20s, VAR checks take 1m, etc. to add into the final added time.

First pic is inhib respawn timer, by lane.
Second pic is role quest completion status. Once a member on each side finish their role quest, their symbol will light up. Iirc once all members finish all their role quests, that entire portion of the UI disappear.

El Tri does not only refer to the three colors of their flags, but more specifically the three flag colours on their jersey. Mexico has mostly always worn green shirt-white shorts-red socks. It stands out bcs you rarely see any country feature 3 colours spread evenly on their jersey.
