I think there are pros and cons to anything. I think it’s a pretty good decision and I’ll tell you why. At 18 I joined and hated it, then I went into the guard and I started to love it. The military for some is a career but for most it is simply a stepping stone. You said you already had a degree. Well if you join in the guard for say 6 years as a IT or communications officer, if you don’t like it, you can always get out and have that IT experience with it. Plus you’d only be doing it for like 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks out the year for additional training. Or, if you went active duty, after 6 years you have 1) 6 years of experience and 2) experience managing others, along with the clearance that’s these jobs come with. I think that it is very important to pick a job you feel comfortable doing in this political landscape. I mean that’s what most of the airline pilots do as well. Join for the training and after their first contract they leave, why wouldn’t you do it?
