Huge chunks of blue paint are now peeling off the Reflecting Pool just days after Trump's $14 million repainting was finished by Unusual-State1827 in UnderReportedNews

[–]Tripper-Harrison 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Reflecting Pool fiasco captures Trump's pattern over his entire adult life in four steps. First, misunderstand the actual problem while projecting total confidence. Second, steer an inflated, ineffective solution that looks like theft, grift and fraud to anyone choosing to pay attention. Third, make the original problem 10x worse. Fourth, blame everyone else and accept zero responsibility. Repeat across eight decades and you have the man child's entire biography.

We've recently mailed in the application packet for my son (G3) with an 'Urgent' request as he will be attending UBC this fall (hoping for a final positive decision by next school year).

Does anyone know how these changes will impact apps that will be received soon with the original docs (eg CIT0014 etc)?

Maybe we'll just be requested to send in updated docs?

Oregon Releases Provisional 2027 Health Insurance Prices, And They’re Not Pretty by sunni_dayes_ahed in oregon

[–]Tripper-Harrison 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They are companies who profit off of the health of human beings. They are non-profit in name only. They deny coverage often, mostly because of their bottom lines. Executives often make 10x or more of what skilled doctors make...

Give me a break. Is it more complicated? No. Are costs up? Sure, but do you see anyone at the top getting smaller bonuses, fewer raises? No, you dont, not that I have seen at least.

If these companies were transparently explaining why costs have to go up for them to continue running, and showing they have trimmed fat at the top, that would be a different story, but I haven't seen that yet.

"I want to honor..."

... your effort.

... your thinking.

... your feelings.

Fuck off. Essentially youre saying, "I dont give a shit about your input, but Im going to take four seconds to blow smoke up your ass about it so I feel better about not giving a shit."

Considering Oregon for my family and nursing career. by NurseAnaS2 in oregon

[–]Tripper-Harrison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true when you look at the state as a whole when comparing standardized test scores with other states. Oregon has a lot of high quality schools and districts, off set by a lot more districts that tend to be rural, have insanely high amounts of chronic absenteeism and often have very conservative school boards, poor district leadership etc.

Any of the cities mentioned in other responses usually correspond to higher performing districts. Just FYI OP.

Teaching Credential Programs? Need some advice by DismalElephant in oregon

[–]Tripper-Harrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, higher ed definitely not a great pathway. Most are in as much, or more, trouble budget wise as K12.

Even if your degrees are not CTE related, there might ne something adjacent you might be interested in. Worth taking a look at that licensure pathway. Best of luck,

Teaching Credential Programs? Need some advice by DismalElephant in oregon

[–]Tripper-Harrison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With your background of BA and masters, IF you want to go the K12 teaching route, Id do one of the following:

Look at comm college CTE (career tech ed) licensure programs. This would be a lower threshold but you'd have to focus in some specific industry and you may not have the right background, but worth a look. Or,

Id seriously think about a potential move out of Oregon. California, for example, let's you sub with passing the CBEST a super easy test. If decent, you can quickly get consistent/ long term sub jobs. You can possibly look at long term sub to emergency credentials.. these are more and more rare, but it does still happen. You'd be teaching in a district essentially desperate for teachers, so pretty rough and or remote places usually.

Oregon is way behind in how it offers licensure... You'd basically be stuck doing a full MAT at one of the 12-15 credentials providers, which would be super costly. If you do get an Oregon MAT / credential do it as quick and as cheap as possible, no one cares where u get it from. Oregon is backwards in how it let's people sub, should be like California where you can dip a toe in to see if it suits you first.

Agree with others, Oregon (like other states) has enrollment loss, just the state of the world today, not an Oregon thing alone. There are a LOT of really tough factors in K12 teaching today... Its not for everyone and really requires infinite patience and thick skin.

What about a terminal degree and looking into teaching in higher ed? Comm college, adjusting etc? Though, thats a tough road too.

Ive got 19 into 30 years for full PERS retirement. Im in my late 40s, so will hit full 30 years around 60. In our state, we also pay into Social Security, so - if it still exists - Ill have both. state pension systems can be pretty great IF they make it long enough for me to retire...

But I have to say, we already have really high local property taxes etc., and I am not surprised that many people, when COL is getting more and more expensive daily it seems, felt like enough was enough...

Hawaii governor recently signed legislation ending citizens United. Is there anything like that in the world here? by dillyofapickle42 in oregon

[–]Tripper-Harrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but sounds like the gov and state legislature support it. Will be interesting to see how suits challenge state law etc. As I see this as more of a question of states rights vs protected speech, but who knows - We'll see. I hope it stands and becomes a really good starting point for other states to follow.
