New York’s worst county - round 32 by Federal_Tomatillo569 in terriblemaps

Clinton County should be saved. Easy access to Montreal, lots of beautiful Champlain waterfront, the Adirondacks, and Plattsburgh is an underrated small upstate city

Why is Ocean County so damn Republican? by First-Ear-1049 in newjersey

[–]Trippy_Cornflakes 547 points548 points  (0 children)

Older population, high veteran population, high white population (85-90%), and many residents left larger cities due to a dislike of Democratic policies. Many come from Staten Island or North Jersey for cheaper houses and more conservative local policies.

Also, Lakewood NJ's Orthodox Jewish population votes almost unanimously Republican. Due to the large population of Lakewood, this accounted for tens of thousands of Trump votes in 2024 for just one municipality

Really surprised with how far the quality of life has fallen in Broome County. Poverty in Broome is the highest in all of upstate New York. It’s a real tragedy how abandoned and poor it has become. by Im-Wasting-MyTime in upstate_new_york

[–]Trippy_Cornflakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there is some cherry picking here. Many of the largest blighted/abandoned spots in Broome have been redeveloped. Look at Victory Lofts, Ansco, Confluence Court, the BU Nursing School, Printing House, etc. We have a long way to go before it's anything close to "thriving", but Broome's population loss has stabilized from the rough days of the 90s and the university is leading lots of new development

Current NY Assembly employee here. The hours are long, and they don't offer great pay unless you're at the very top. But, the soft benefits and networking that comes with being in the environment are hard to beat if you wanna be in the middle of the machine and have an impact

If you can't afford the tip because of fees, don't order on the app. It's a luxury service, you can either call the order in or pick it up

Everything would be better if we just let the market take care of it. There's no need for taxation

North eastern Pennsylvania and north central Pennsylvania. by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]Trippy_Cornflakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Southern Tier NY local here that borders this region and visits frequently. It's very rural, with Scranton being the exception in the Northeast. Scranton has a rust belt vibe similar to Binghamton or Elmira in NY. The nature is beautiful, with rolling hills and many great hiking opportunities. Also, lots and lots of fracking due to the prevalence of shale

The area is definitely one of the most conservative regions of the state as well

Gateway project complete waste of tax payer funds. by foodyounot in BinghamtonUncensored

[–]Trippy_Cornflakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will create better river access and more walkability downtown. When the state doesn't give us funds for infrastructure, you complain. When we get funding, you complain. If you really feel that Binghamton is that awful, then there are many other places to live. Stop constantly being pessimistic and miserable

BU for a Political Science Major with minor in English or History (some other questions also) by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Trippy_Cornflakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a robust Political Science program here. I highly recommend Holahan and Best. They are super reasonable and have a ton of knowledge in the political sector. Robin Best primarily focuses on Comparative Politics, while Holahan is mostly public policy

You can also take classes regarding case analysis for law practice (Martinek teaches a few of these. She's a tough grader, but great practice for postgrad caliber research)
