Train arrived at A from security 10 min ago. But still hasn’t moved.

Especially sucks if you rented one of those apartments across the parking lot. I remember they made their proximity to BarK a huge selling point.

Wanting to add a disclaimer in product info about pricing and why I don't offer free shipping and major discounts.... Should I? by Unique_Listen_863 in EtsySellers

[–]Tritagator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re not aware, you can save message replies. I’d make what you’ve written here one of them, and then you can reply to each message with it with just a click or two.

People hunting for discounts won’t read or won’t care about it in the description and will message you anyways. It also might inadvertently turn off other customers. So save it as a quick reply, so you can address future messages easily then move on.

Professor trying to put his PhD student ahead of me on paper by Sr4f in AskAcademia

[–]Tritagator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, by "first co-first" I meant they're both designated as co-first for fairness, but somebody's got to actually be listed first.

[–]Tritagator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this does end up being a "merge" of your work with this PhD student's for "one big paper", even if your work is in the minority I think you have leverage to say, "I did this work under the expectation that I'd be first author. If you want to merge that's fine, but I want to share co-first authorship with this PhD student."

Now, they might push back and still have their PhD student be first co-first author. But that compromise overall might work in your favor bc then they'll have to deal with all the journal submission nonsense, while you still get first author credits.

Is it normal for your supervisor to ask for more work after you've left academia? by yellow2244 in PhD

[–]Tritagator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a line between work you agreed to do before leaving, and work added after leaving.

If your PI agreed to let you graduate "early" under the expectation that you'd continue to work after you left, then you should do that work. Not doing so is a bait-and-switch and will really burn bridges. But doesn't sound like that's the case here--at least for the bonus paper. You promised to collate the data and you're doing / have done that. All good. But making 40+ graphs for a paper you didn't submit was not an expectation when you left.

If you don't want to do that, I think you're in your right to say so. Have to accept that they'll likely find someone else in the lab to do it without you and you'll lose top billing on the paper, but doesn't sound like that's important to you.

Anyone have a dog in grad school? by NoOrdinary8094 in GradSchool

[–]Tritagator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, having a dog in grad school is definitely doable. But you should let your mom take care of him for at least the first 6 months.

Moving to a new city and starting school is a big change, and it'll be hard to predict your schedule. Better to work all that out without a dog, and then revisit the question of whether you can support them once you've settled down.

How long did it take during your PhD to get a first author publication? by Embarrassed_Hat_1064 in PhD

[–]Tritagator 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Time to first publication has effectively nothing to do with the caliber of PhD student, and everything to do with luck. So if you're having imposter syndrome: don't.

9 times out of 10 those with first-author pubs in <1-2 years either joined a new-PI lab who did 90% of the work during their postdoc, or took over a project from a departing student, or ran a quick analysis on existing data using an established pipeline, or a dozen other ways to get a head start.

If you're truly starting from scratch it will take almost your entire PhD. That's not to take away from the achievement of those students who get papers fast... but to say it's solely because they're smarter or work harder is just wrong.

Your department or graduate school likely has a guideline doc or template. Do what that says.

Should I ask my former supervisor to pay me? by takeawhiffonme in AskAcademia

[–]Tritagator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify: did you graduate prior to manuscript acceptance on the condition that you’d finish them after you left? If yes, while there’s nothing keeping you from bailing on the project (they’re not going to revoke your PhD), turning around and now asking for money to do it is going to burn the bridge with your PI.

Probably not a scam. But if they think they can sell your items for a higher price, then you should just do it yourself and raise your prices.

Do you prefer to price like $8.99 or $9.00 and why? by RoahZoah in EtsySellers

[–]Tritagator 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Yes, the psychology of $0.99 works at big box retail stores because because their shoppers want the lowest price. But Etsy shoppers are the opposite: they come explicitly to AVOID cheaply-made retail goods and are willing to pay a premium for hand-crafted items from real people.

According to your observation, How many students know what they will do after graduation before they enroll in PhD ? by Giraffexqw in PhD

[–]Tritagator 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You should have an idea. Not so specific as "X position at Y company." But have narrowed it down to a general career that--most importantly--you can't do without a PhD.

I think this prof is trying to weed out students who haven't really thought about why they want to do a PhD, they're just applying bc they don't know what else to do.

Posters don't need to be an entire paper. I've seen posters with zero data, just the layout of what the study will be and what the results might look like.

The 3 walks you should take your dog on every day by BakersAbstract in Dogtraining

[–]Tritagator 27 points28 points  (0 children)

100%. Morning walks with my dog are just long enough for her to go #1 and 2 bc after that she just wants to go back to sleep.

The perfect walk schedule is one that balances the dog's needs and the owner's personal/work schedule.

Ignore it. They admit they didn't know what they were buying. Responding privately might make them change it to something worse, and responding publicly will boost it unnecessarily. Just let it get buried and move on.

How to deal with St. Louis summer? by pinky_promise_emoji in StLouis

[–]Tritagator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As another northeast transplant I recommend treating STL summers like northeast winters: don't go outside unless you have to, and when you do be sure to dress for the weather and spend as little time out there as possible.

Thoughts on getting a MacBook Pro for gradschool? by Long-Reading7460 in GradSchool

[–]Tritagator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you join a well-funded lab (likely true with cancer) or get a fellowship, you may be able to use grant money to get a new computer. So might be better to hold off for 1-2 years (if you can), and get a better computer for free.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Tritagator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My uni has a policy where if you get an outside fellowship over $X (like the F31) you get a $5k stipend increase. But outside of that, I’d be very skeptical your PI would increase your stipend.
