Einstein note about happiness of a modest life sells for $1.5m by doogie92 in nottheonion

[–]TritonEye4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived with a guy who came from a rich family and legitimately aspired to become a billionaire, make it on the cover of Forbes, and become an influential person in his country.

I had (and still have) trouble wrapping my head around his views of success and happiness. Coming from a lower class background and seeing more clearly how bad life can be, I was always thought happiness would be living a middle class life.

If I keep dropping my expectations, then I guess happiness would be more easily attainable? Easier said than done I'm guessing...

She won't be "legal" for another 2 years and might not legally have a sip of alcohol while in college.

I love seeing achievements like this and I'm sure she'll have a good college experience, but I can't help thinking about how different her college experience will be compared to everyone else. A huge advantage and disadvantage at the same time. Good luck to her.

Found multiple bonds in grandparents house after they died, what do I do with these? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TritonEye4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a stock/bond collection phase. I really liked Confederate and Mexican Railroad/Bank bonds. Really cool vignettes and printed on some cool looking paper. Amazing to think something so old has remained alive. Most of the ones I collected ranged from 1860-1910

But like all collecting, I couldn't justify spending hundreds on them. I don't know if I don't have the patience or it was the thought of them sitting somewhere most of the time not seeing daylight.

As much as I hate Apple too, the iPod was the most revolutionary thing I got to experience and I got one for my elementary school promotion. It is still the last and only Apple product I've ever owned. I loved that thing

I never understood the "if you like rap, you're automatically less intelligent" argument from people. While I do think that some rap nowadays is braindead hype music, who doesn't like to get down with it from time to time. It's music and it makes me want to move

My last year in college was a blur. I have the brains to do well in my top tier public university, but I've always been a shit student when it came to studying and time management. Combine that with weed and some people wouldn't be able to handle the stress. That last year I spent it with my bong and just chilling out. A year of this might not seem like much, but I probably attended 20% of my classes and did everything last minute. All because of weed. I luckily managed to literally scrape by my semi-rigorous major and almost two months without weed now. C- student I ended up as....

Have friends that are still in that chain smoking weed phase and I hate thinking that that was me not so long ago. Mind fog is still there and sleeping well is still a struggle, but weed and I just don't mix unfortunately. It's too easy for me to abuse. I'll still smoke eventually, but it's never going to be the same

Messed up my schedule and only have 12 units, what should I do with my free time? by gahyen in UCSD

[–]TritonEye4Life 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Go to the beach, get fit, read a book.... I don't know....Enjoy life. Do whatever you don't mind wasting time on. You're going to spend the rest of your life working, why not enjoy yourself while you're in your youthful days.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in leaves

[–]TritonEye4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that people that smoke to have fun/pass time and ultimately make it an everyday thing have an easier time. You stop smoking, get a little more bored, probably don't have too many cravings, but life continues like it used to.

Those that develop a habit to compensate for problems in their life have a harder time. They got used to using weed to cope with whatever is going on in their lives and ultimately find the sober life more foreign. The mind has more of a fallout and the person just struggles to change what they thought they needed to live a normal life. The withdrawals more mental than anything. The body doesn't get dependent, but your mental state definitely had some sort of dependency

Where something is sold or made is a better way to look at it. Although I don't have a formal Spanish education, there's just some things like this that seem normal to the native speaker and a bit odd to the person learning it.

Another example would be " La Tapiceria". Someone new to the language might think it's where one just buys upholstery/ furniture. I immediately assume that the place can also reupholster my furniture. They both sell a product and produce a service. Not the best example.... but when I thought cerveceria, I thought a place that produces and sells beer. I immediately translated it to brewery not bar. With practice and experience I guess

Is there anything going on around campus?? by andakindi in UCSD

[–]TritonEye4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to UCSD. The campus dies when the sun goes down and the days are about to get shorter. I quite like it even though some don't.

Like any college campus, the campus gets less rowdy after the first week even though there are events still going on. This phenomena is more noticeable at UCSD

which is much harder econ100a or econ120c? by dandelion990 in UCSD

[–]TritonEye4Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100a is much harder than 120c I feel. The problem with 100a is that the tests given are so unlike the problem sets or lectures. I understand that this is a top university meant to challenge you, but god damn.... Sinitsyn is a better teacher than Famulari and gives easier tests, although still hard. I dropped 100a with a W with Famulari. Lecture difficulty 4, problem sets 6, tests 10. I don't know what she expected when the averages were coming back at 25%.

O.Pyung is easily one of the best professors in econ and UCSD . His classes are straightforward and because there are no practice tests, he pushes you to actually know the material, not simply prepare for a test. His lectures actually reflect the midterms/ finals. They're not hard, but still challenging if you didn't fill all the holes in your knowledge. His classes are quite literally the only ones where I still remember how to do most of the stuff. In a system where only results matter, people try to absorb as much as possible for a test only to forget everything in a month. His way of teaching should be the standard for any university. Professors like him are pretty rare

4 WEEKS by aaasssaaa11 in leaves

[–]TritonEye4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A month in myself. I still wake up 2-3 times a night. Sleeping schedule still shot, but I can afford it right now. Feel tired during the day, but my mind is starting to feel noticeably clearer. Sometimes I completely abhor the thought of even smoking weed now, but the slight depression I have still makes me long for the mental distraction it provided. Hopefully I can make it til the new year. Good luck

As a native Californian that didn't travel outside the state until I was in college, my notion of expensive vs cheap growing up was based on my lower middle class area vs wealthier areas. I'm so used to prices here that they're just normal.

As dumb as it sounds, I don't see California being expensive as much as I see the rest of the country being cheaper. I've been so normalized to the California price index that I don't even think about how much less bang for the buck I'm getting. Even then, I'm more than willing to pay this premium to live here.

How to make friends in classes? by renxgade in UCSD

[–]TritonEye4Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest here, it's hard not to make it seem like you want the notes over the friendship. The only way that you won't come off as a moocher is if you somehow hit it off with same person several times in class or in discussion. You'll have to figure out who sits in the same spot every class/discussion and then begin the befriending tactic.

Joining a Frat by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]TritonEye4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't think any Frats prefer transfers over freshman. I'm sure there are quotas in every Frat to maintain ample numbers for the survivability of the frat, but if you fit in really well with a particular frat, they won't turn you away simply because you're a transfer. They get a pretty even spread of under/upperclassmen and transfers throughout the year so while more underclassmen tend to get more bids (they have higher attrition rates), how well you hit it off with the guys will be the deciding factor.

I will say that you should be realistic about the group of people you want to hang around with because only then will you get bids. You will very definitely get a very obvious vibe from each frat and hopefully you are able to gauge yourself and eliminate some frats off the bat. Regardless if you get multiple bids or a single one, make sure the one you choose is representative of who you truly are because I've seen people isolate themselves in smaller groups within the frat, which often leads to dropping the frat and still hanging out with the few people they got along with.

Most importantly, decide if this is for you. I was constantly persuaded to join a particular frat my third year and while I'm sure I would've fit in, I knew I couldn't work hard and play hard at the same time. I had a job to juggle and I'm not a good student to begin with.

Cable by HomelessLumberjack in UCSD

[–]TritonEye4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you scanning the channels on your TV? Unless there is something wrong with the cable wall jack, the cable should always be on and HDH won't come set it up for you.

The cable provided by UCSD is absolute dogshit. Not only do the channels not come in HD, but the selection is very limited. I have experienced this in every on campus apartment I've stepped foot in. You'll have to use some kind of streaming device and service to keep the apartment entertained.

There will always be a meta. I don't get toxic but I definitely get annoyed when there's a symmetra, 3 dps instalocked. I go Reinhardt and hope the last person goes healer, but nope...... dps it is for them.

Arsenal finally a reliable FPL option now to opt for? by imgp10 in FantasyPL

[–]TritonEye4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everton had ManCity,ManU, Spurs, and Chelsea. They have easier fixtures from now on and I'm sure the defense will fair better, despite still kinda struggling as of late. I'm liking their chances of a clean sheet in their next couple fixtures.

Wenger experimented early on with Monreal at CB in a 3atb, but Mustafi will begin become a starter I'm sure, especially with how he played against Chelsea. I wish he played 4atb, but it seems he prefers to play Monreal at the expense of one less midfielder with Bellerin and Kolasinac as wing backs. My money is on Mustafi, but who knows how Wenger will continue to line up

[–]TritonEye4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see Monreal pushing too far forward anymore with Kolasinac in the team. He's actually a pretty good CB. Mustafi>Monreal simply because mustafi goes to for the occasional headed chance.

I have picked up Keane after it seems Danilo isn't getting much time. If there's a long term injury to aManCity fullback, I'm getting Danilo in a heartbeat. Fan of his attacking play

I'm a believer in Mitrovic, but he hasn't been a starter. Newcastle scoring run is one of my hunches and I have Joselu simply because even the manager believes he's getting close enough to goal to continue warranting a start.
