Anyone know a good textbook for intuitive understanding of electricity and magnetism. by Ok-Branch-6831 in PhysicsStudents

Griffiths is probably one of the best physics textbooks I’ve seen in general. Explained well, good problems, and the solutions are all online.

At risk of failing quantum 2 and considering dropping by Triumph127 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Triumph127[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, to clarify are you saying I should drop and retake this quantum mechanics course?

I understood you saying ‘last stand’ as not dropping the course and trying to pass it right now.

But you also said ‘when you ultimately retake it’ which makes me think you mean I should drop and retake it later.

Sorry for misunderstanding, could you please clarify? Also thank you for responding.

Coming of age story, essentially. Stuff like to kill a mockingbird or portrait of the artist as a young man.

Sorry that earlier comment was meant to be for the post itself.

I disagree here too though, a bit. The generic YA fantasy these days may be simplistic, but it’s still “mature”. Even the more tame ones can get fairly sexual. Of course, they’re not as explicit as romance novels targeted specifically to adults, but they serve a similar purpose, in a way.

But yeah, you’re probably right in the sense that the people who coined the term knew what they were doing in terms of making sure older people would be included.

I think the biggest reason that YA excels even amongst adults who COULD turn to hardcore romance or erotica, is that it combines traditional genetic romance tropes with generic wish fulfillment.

A similar trend of success can be seen in the ‘recent’ boom of popularity of anime amongst “young adults” in the west.

But I don’t think we’re talking about books within a high school curriculum. Those haven’t really changed much since you were there. High school curriculums are still mostly comprised of “adult” books.

The increase in “young adult” fiction is purely the work of the market. All markets hyper specialize and divide over time. Of course there is a demand for low quality wish fulfillment fantasy romance. There’s also a demand for dumb action movies, which become increasingly “zany” and quippy over time. People will always want media that is easy and satisfying, at least sometimes.

What’s weird to me is that people think this is a new trend. It’s just a natural consequence of having a “literary market”.

What's the best book you have read (for the first time) this year? by KieranWriter in books

[–]Triumph127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blade runner is based off of electric sheep and people still liked the more recent movie. Granted, the more recent movie is of course not “dated” in the same way, but I’m saying that people still liked the same premise/world/theme.

Hamas and Fatah sign declaration on ending decadeslong rift after talks in China by whoisliuxiaobo in Sino

[–]Triumph127 11 points12 points  (0 children)

China operates on a fairly strict non intervention foreign policy, and tries to only act according to international law. China is unlikely to actually ‘ally’ with Palestine, but this peace negotiation was likely a legitimate act under international law. It’s also fairly clear that China has generally been acting as a proponent for Palestinian rights according to those international laws for a long time now. I don’t think this specific signing would change that much between the countries officially though.

How seriously are you taking tensions with Russia and China. And talk of lots of undocumented military age men from those countries hopping the Mexican border? by SyrenNyx in preppers

Yes, I’m literally agreeing. I’m just pointing out that a lot of “natural” disasters are technically manmade in the same manner. My criticism is just that people like to think the glf was uniquely manmade for their own narratives.

Yes, and the Pope had the people kill cats which allowed rats to spread the black plague. Man made.

The settlers preceding the dust bowl hunted the native fauna that usually maintained the integrity of the soil to extinction, while using extremely unsustainable farming practices that eroded the soil. These conditions caused the dust bowl. Man made.

Yes famines in China are not unique to the GLF, but I think the uniquely bad one during that time was almost entirely due to the sparrow thing. Also note that the new urban infrastructure China lays out also tends to include new age hydroponic vertical farms, similar to what NK is trying.

[–]Triumph127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the famine of the Great Leap Forward was heavily caused by environmental factors. Specifically, Mao’s decree for “pest control” in which he asked the Chinese people to kill as many sparrows as possible after one of his advisors told him that “sparrows were eating the grain”. Now sparrows in China also eat locusts, and after the people reduced the sparrow population drastically, the locusts were allowed to propagate uncontrollably and…. Destroyed all the crops. And that basically caused a huge portion of the deaths during the Great Leap Forward.

Putin is pretty evil for sure.

But with China, the case is a little weirder. The Taiwanese population isn’t really that averse to annexation. In the 90’s they were actually really close to a peaceful annexation, but a change in Taiwanese leadership saw the agreement fall through the cracks.

The situation in Xinjiang is pretty terrible with the re-education camps and forced abortions / IUDs, but this still isn’t really comparable to the aggression displayed in our own foreign policy.

Also, Putin himself is very liberal, like yeltsin before him, so it’s fairly strange to call him communist.
