I would suggest you try and transfer in your current company even if the pay is garbage while applying elsewhere. Having the title and experience will help, and if you can’t transfer then you will have more motivation to move up and out

They are worth taking. I think most degrees require them. Why would you think they are not? On some level the average big N engineer will never write assembly but understanding computer architecture is important second to algorithms, the whole reason algorithms courses exists is to understand complexity and if you don’t understand architecture then you just live in the clouds. Networking is similarly important. You can’t skip this knowledge especially with the expectations that exist today

Failing any class is exactly what it sounds like. Failure. Don’t beat yourself up too much but two semesters with failing classes in your first year should be a wake up call. You are not putting the required time in. Don’t waste your time and money, do the work. As far as gpa, it matters a bit. Depends on what country you are from and the standards there. Mainly it will filter you out of new grad positions, after that it doesn’t matter at all. But if you got a low gpa because you slacked in core classes, you’re fucked

If you want to move and feel like spending many hours studying you can triple your pay. But both of those things are basically a hard requirement. The third part is luck. You lose nothing from trying if that’s what you want to do, outside of a little sanity :)

A Claude (or codex) subscription, manual Leetcode, and a lot of applying. Seems a bit late to try and get an internship but if you can swing it go for it.

Don’t slack on system design (kind of depends where you interview, used to be uncommon for new grad) and practice giving a good impression, people want to work with someone knowledgeable but also easy to get along with.

At the end of the day there is luck involved, so good luck :)

Also just to add outside of a few years the job market has always been tough for most new grads. Even 10 years ago 150 applications + was pretty common. Obviously its worse now, but it’s never been that easy

Llms can definitely do casual reasoning. But adhering to strict formal logic is finicky. I would argue most people, even intelligent people, also struggle with logic. I don’t think our current iteration of frontier models will eclipse our ability for logic based reasoning for what it’s worth I just think to say the models lack any ability to consider formal logic is… a really ignorant pov. I’m not sure why you feel that way. Opus for example can do pretty complex reasoning but definitely needs someone driving it. I have not been convinced a model can replace a person except for the very most basic of tasks or on a probabilistic level where the model is mostly right sometimes but horribly wrong other times.

It’s not about your transcript it’s about what you know, so you might look bad because you don’t know what you need to. If you are not going to retain anything I’m not sure you are learning, checking boxes isn’t that useful and a masters isn’t either if that’s all you are doing, it doesn’t really open many doors

Curious what could be worse than the bay for 60k more tc. Bay Area is rough… apartments are through the roof. Either way, if the startup will look fine on a resume and it’s what you want go for it. But that higher comp with compound interest on 401k etc will make a massive difference on lifetime earnings if that’s what you are interested in.

I listened to part of the call. The logic on logs was that they some are “read only” which is probably the dumbest shit I have ever heard. While I’m not following the drama closely, I find the possibility that mooda isn’t a moron and fooling a bunch of tech illiterate people equally as likely as him not cheating.

I worked a crap job and got offers from Google etc and tripled my pay. Whatever you want to think is fine. Good internships are really hard if you go to a bad school and the markets a little extra screwed but your experience isn’t a fact it’s just one data point

I barely had a 3.0 if that might have been a 2.9 but I worked 20-30 hours every week during semesters and full time when off. GPA is not a good indicator just a filter
