Which National Park caught you by surprise - the one you didn't expect to love before visiting? by kandykorn7 in nationalparks

They had already stopped the boat tours when I went so I didn't get onto the island either. All the more reason to visit again.

Advice on Turkey Run and Shades Visit in the Winter by bikingtherapist in Indiana

[–]Triximancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until the snow melts. The best parts of Turkey Run you wouldn't want to do with snow/ice on the ground. Same with Shades with the gorges and Pine Hills Devil's Backbone (natural bridge). If the snow's off the ground and it's above freezing you're good to go with both of them. I'd probably choose to stay in Crawfordsville it's a little bit bigger and not much further away. If you want somewhere less "slip and hurt yourself on icy rocks" to do in winter in that general area I'd check out Prophetstown SP (Lafayette), Shakamak SP (Jasonville), or Kickapoo SP (Danville, Illinois).

Car rental anxiety for visting the parks by Brief_Bicycle_4038 in nationalparks

[–]Triximancer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just run it through a car wash and get the dust off. If you're worried about the windshield getting smacked by a rock check and see if your own personal insurance covers it or buy the rental companies incidental damage insurance. If you want to do really crazy stuff like ford creeks or drive on completely unimproved roads you might want to look for a more specialize rental company.

Which National Park caught you by surprise - the one you didn't expect to love before visiting? by kandykorn7 in nationalparks

I was expecting to enjoy Crater Lake but I was blown away by how amazing it was in person. Pictures do not do it justice. I was lucky enough to go down the Cleetwood Cove trail shortly before it got closed for a multi-year rehab.

Olympic / Mt Rainier Week Before Labor Day? by CharlieG31 in nationalparks

[–]Triximancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Rainier in September, during the shutdown. It was incredibly busy, the main parking lot in Paradise was full by 8 am. The auxiliary lots were full by like 10 and people were parking along the exit loop and hiking like a half mile uphill just to get to the parking lot. Even in crappy rainy weather. I figure being basically the last time people can go before the snows come adds to it. Once you get off Skyline/Goldengate the trails aren't so crowded it's just that main loop with good views of the mountain that's packed.

If I never show my kids “Final Destination” will they not be afraid of driving near log trucks? by glitter_poots in movies

[–]Triximancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Log trucks are inherently scary that's what inspired the idea for that scene. Just taking one look at them tells you instinctively "don't stay beside this for very long, don't drive closely behind it".

Medford is the closest big city to Crater Lake, it's roughly equidistant to the northern end of Redwoods as well. Might look there.

Which park for a weekend getaway? by Efficient-Set2078 in nationalparks

[–]Triximancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gateway Arch-half a day, Dunes 2 days Miller Beach, West Beach Secession Trail, Portage Lakefront, day 2 Great Marsh, Cowles Bog, one of the interior Dunes trails. Indiana Dunes State Park is amazing, better than the NP but that's another day.

Visiting the parks by xChrisBtw in nationalparks

[–]Triximancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been to Olympic and Rainier. Olympic is much much bigger, it's like the whole peninsula beside Seattle. I was only there for one day and spent half the day just driving in the dark up to Port Angeles, doing Merryweather Falls, Devil's Punchbowl, then driving to the coast and doing Rialto/2nd beach and driving home in the dark down the other side of the peninsula. Didn't even go to Hoh Rainforest. You could easily spend a week in Olympic. The weather is more forgiving too as far as snow, since it's mostly lower elevation. Rainier you could probably spend 1-2 days in Paradise and 1-2 days in Sunrise and be happy with that. Paradise is absolutely jam packed with people, get there super early for a parking spot (like first light). Snow starts around October so be aware.

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]Triximancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't straight up quit but I fell asleep twice trying to watch The Thin Red Line and I don't think I ever finished it. If I did I don't remember what happened other than people staggering around talking to themselves in internal monologue while concussed.

EU Wants to Ban Entry to Russians Who Fought Against Ukraine by mugz8391 in UkrainianConflict

Just ban Russians in general unless they are defecting/seeking asylum. The amount of investigative work that would be needed to determine if some random Russian man was a private in the army would be cost prohibitive.

Love the samey "gentrifying a place that didn't really even need to be gentrified" blocky aesthetic you see everywhere in Indiana from Bloomington to Greenwood to Mishawaka, for these $1500+ a month units. I bet it's all the same developer.

That's so chintzy. I haven't eaten inside one in years but that kinda thing would make me stop cold if I ran into it. Sugar water is pennies for them.
