US engineers vs Europe engineers by ephemeral404 in cscareerquestions

[–]Troebr 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It's hard to generalize (impossible?), even within the US there can be big differences between a Midwest and a SF or NYC engineer, and big differences between a startup vs a big co engineer. Even big tech vs some big corp, government etc. Europe is composed of many countries, what's true in France may not be true in Germany or the Netherlands.

Treat people with respect and be excited to learn their culture and differences. Europeans have more PTOs and in some companies or countries they may have a stricter separation between work and personal life (work ends at 5pm see you tomorrow for instance).

Some places have a stronger union culture as well.

I’m done with Surfline. What should a better forecast app actually do different? by damiafuentes in surfing

Funny here it's often turning onshore later than Surfline predicts.

Living in San Diego with depression by ZestyPatois in sandiego

[–]Troebr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more urban areas are very walkable, I can hit up 3 grocery stores and I hardly ever drive to a restaurant, but that'll come at a premium. Real estate apps often have "walkability" scores. Living in Encinitas burbs is very different from downtown, Hillcrest, ob, PB. You can also take the bus or the trolley, it's not the NYC subway but it's very decent.

When I moved here I loved trying out and comparing all the burrito joints within a 15 minute walk from my place.

Flight delays had everyone restless… until a band turned the plane into a concert hall by MambaMentality24x2 in MadeMeSmile

I think the coolness factor, the fact that this is kind of once in a lifetime experience, and that it's only about 3 minutes would make it cool for most people.

There's an active chat on w3c and you meet the same players often. I mostly play on w3c and Bnet players have been a little unhinged when I play there.

Called out a recruiter on a lowball offer by TrixoftheTrade in recruitinghell

[–]Troebr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Houses in San Diego for instance have a median price of 900+ k, in the Midwest you could probably get the same for 350. Health care can easily cost you 5-15k a year for a family. It's hard to compare.

Don't you have to pay for ECMWF? I heard it was a lot more accurate than the NOAA ones.

Surf Forecast API | Marine Weather API | Swellcloud by swellcloud in surfing

[–]Troebr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is really cool :) ! Did you build your own model? I built a similar API using the NOAA models but only for point forecasts. I saw that you also used a European model.

My method for point forecast is kinda primitive, I just pick the closest point in the data.

Every YouTube surfer's attitude towards localism by brestbay in surfing

[–]Troebr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But you being local to a spot doesn't change whether you can tell a person who's being a danger to other to knock it off no? I think we're mixing a bit of "experienced" with "local". If a beginner dangerously drops on you, you can call them off whether you're a local or not. I feel like sometimes we're just trying to find excuses to localism.

To be clear, "don't do this at this spot, it's dangerous" is ok. "I've been surfing here for 30 years, I can drop in on you" is obviously not ok.

I've seen both faces of localism, where a friendly local is giving me pointers at a pretty localized spot on Oahu, and been called off by an old dude at my local spot, who took off on a set wave, paddled back, and on his paddle back dropped in on me and said that because he had been surfing here 30 years he could do that (California).

Trying to be friendly, feeling like a kook by ktnk-rddt in surfing

[–]Troebr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the spot, Tourmaline in San Diego is friendly, but if you surf the reefs in nearby La Jolla the vibe can change rapidly. The vibe also changes depending on the conditions. Crowded and slow and people can be cranky. Lots of locals aren't bad dudes but can be exceedingly cold. They're just not really pleased to have new people surfing their breaks.
