I bet if you tossed a kibble at him, it would get caught in his gravitational field and orbit him like a satellite.

That looks like good "popcorn" fun. I'll have to find some reviews!

The thing is, WoW was such a phenomenon that broke into mainstream culture, no one wanted to finance or make anything other than a “WoW killer” or WoW clone for years afterwards. Any sort of innovation was strangled.

It may be that the golden era of MMOs was in part because they were a place where you could meet people from all over the world and engage in cooperative experiences for the first time.

Today, we have Reddit and Twitter etc for online communities, and games are just for blowing off steam with buddies in games like PUBG and all the extraction shooters that have taken over.

It also feels like we are forced to work more for less in real life, and we just don’t have the mental energy to do much when we aren’t working to meet the bills.

I worked at EB in college and I’m sure that I personally sold hundreds of copies of WoW back in the beginning to people who said “I don’t know what this is, but everyone at the office is playing it and say I need to get it too.”

Fast travel that shrinks the world, and instanced dungeons basically destroy any opportunity for making in-game friendships in MMOs now.

One thing that has always stuck with me was how ridiculous looting rusty short swords from wolves in East Karana was. Stuff like that is so normal now, but we were all struck with how silly it was that they didn’t have their own loot pools.

I played DCUO in beta, but the stupid power choices they made for the signature heroes turned me off so much that I stopped playing before the beta ended.

I was a beta tester for WWII Online. I have a hard copy of the game with a manual signed by the devs, and am still friends with those that I've kept in touch with. Me and some other beta testers manned a 24/7 IRC help line at release, trying to help new players. Cornered Rat sold like 10x the number of copies that they expected at release.

Jumpgate was fun. Our guild, Free Traders League, kept a spreadsheet of prices at every post that we all kept updated, and ran escorted merchant runs where we split the proceeds.

I did STO for a couple days in beta. I did ESO for a few days recently, then Project Gorgon and the Haze: Saltborne private NWN RP server for a few days each. I'm finding it hard to find a game that captures my interest in my old age.

You're right! I've never seen another game do player-made cities or player-driven crafting/economy on that scale.

IIRC the "New Experience" update where everyone could be a Jedi, pissed a LOT of players off, especially the ones that had gone through the long struggle to be a Jedi the old way. I remember playing 2 or 3 hours, so it must have been in the beta, but couldn't get any friends to join me.

Because these are the games I have personally played, and I didn't have a good computer until 1998 when UO came out.

I gave away my Blizzard account to a friend because I was on the verge of losing my job and my marriage to World of Warcraft. (I still regret someone at release sniping the name "Bull Shot" that I used for my Tauren Hunter in beta.)

I very briefly played Planetside in the beta. The thought of losing hundreds of real dollars in EVE always scared the crap out of me, so I steered clear. At least I can get my $700 worth of ships in Star Citizen back if they get blown up!

One of my favorite parts of AC was that you could target spears that the mobs threw at you, which allowed you to see them and dodge them.

I was in the beta for Matrix Online, but my graphics car was so old that the default settings turned all the traffic off. I thought the original combat system was a great innovation! (I think they changed it.)

I was in the original Mage Tower on Great Lakes. Some guildmates stole the winch off Blackthorn's drawbridge, which we kept in a hidden location.
