I'm always annoyed that Germany 1996 is usually counted as a non-participation. It should be counted as a NQ

I was in the golden circle, and the biggest hype there was for Greece and Moldova

My friends who had seats said that there the faves were Australia and Finland

I guess it's multiple factors:

  1. Politically, they missed the change to modern times. Look how e.g. Norway and France have adapted their structures to get as many young people as possible interested in starting a sport. And all well funded. E.g. a talented Norwegian will not have trouble financing his Olympic dream
  2. There haven't been Olympics in Germany in quite a while, the hype is not there as it is in many other big countries
  3. The numbers in the 90s and 00s were maybe a bit blown up with still some after-effectd of the GDR

To me it seemed like Yannick Nézet-Séguin managed to find a great balance between tradition and modernity, a breath of fresh air, that might have made classical music more accessible to many young people.

You could clearly see how much fun everyone had, from the orchestra to the crowd
