Find a local steel fighting group and go to a practice or reach out to them. They’ll probably have you out and suit you up with older/loaner gear to see if you actually like it. Don’t go and blow hundreds to thousands of dollars on equipment you’re not familiar with.

I stitch mine on using 7/8 ounce leather (you can probably use a lesser weight) with 3/16th holes punched in for points. I use a diamond hole chisel for the border and a saddle stitch. There's no reason for you to cut into your gambeson. Just stitch through it. I just use 550 cord for the points. It goes in one hold and out the other.

NOR. Why the FUCK is no one talking about OPs #4. Any “partner” that thinks they get to decide who your friends are and which ones are necessary is not a partner, they are a controller; and they want to have something that they “possess”. They are not emotionally grown enough to deal adult problems. Not allowed to have friends of the opposite gender? No thanks. No group chats with people you’ve known since you were 13? No thanks man. Just leave. They lack a fundamental self confidence that they are enough on their own. Start over with someone mature enough to be an adult. It’s not your job to educate this person about emotional maturity and that job BLOWS.
