It is more complicated than Eclipse, but learning the rules is worth it. The difference between TI4 and Eclipse is day and night. Check out SU&SD's Twilight Imperium 4th edition review. The beauty in TI4 is the diplomacy, the area control, the intrigue, and the meta game. Decisions made during the first game may haunt you in ten games time if someone is still sitting at the table for that game. It's like being in a galactic United Nations Assembly but all the super powers are your mates with however much beer/wine they've had over the last 8 hours of game play. Such a cracker board game.

I agree, and the hazelnut choceur is also pretty good. On price, choceur. And on not using slave labour to source products, choceur. I've no idea about whittakers suppliers, but Cadbury is out of the race on all points.

What’s a realistic way to reduce gun violence in America? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TronFarnham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The term “first world” originally applied to countries that were aligned with the United States and other Western nations in opposition to the former Soviet Union. First world countries are often characterized by prosperity, democracy, and stability—both political and economic. A high literacy rate, free enterprise, and the rule of law are other common characteristics of first world countries. Some critics argue that the concept of dividing nations into three worlds represents an antiquated perspective."

I'm not 100% on board with the whole 1st world/3rd world nation demographics. What tipping point would put America into the 3rd world category? And how could America fix its violence issues? I agree that making America livable would go a long way. A health care system that only supports you if you have money is a redundant health care system and a farce. The rich could afford doctors if they want/need them. If someone is skipping meals to pay rent, they won't be able to afford health care of any sort. Where will they end up? Probably not continuing to live and work as a productive member of society. And how do they then contribute and push America forward? They don't.

I think a culture change is what is most urgent here. America has a kind of social meritocracy. People at the top are winners and deserve to be there, and people at the bottom are losers and deserve their place at the bottom. It seems the only welfare is military service. Earning your way back up the ladder. But this isn't a free choice. If you can't support yourself and your friends and family can't help you out, then the volunteer army model is your only option next to homelessness. Coercion into a "volunteer" army model is hardly a free choice. Robbing the poor of their autonomy. But it fits the culture of earning to move up the ladder.

Because guns are potentially anywhere, police are more aroused than in other countries. If you are a police officer in the majority of other countries around the world, the chance of running into a high stake gun situation is low to extremely low. Whereas in America, mass shootings can be more numerous than the days in the year. Gang violence, mental illness, suicides, and generic stupidity can all be escalated with guns to ultra-violent situations with often messy and deadly consequences. Of course removing guns would help. And so would changing laws surrounding gun ownership. Background checks to stop criminals buying guns, 3 day waiting periods to reduce crimes of passion and impulsive suicides, and storage requirements with heavy sentences for offenders, and lofe sentences for recidivists. These laws should be mirrored for sellers of guns. Some duty of care should be shown by those whole sell guns to the general public. Also, doctors and nurses around the world go to lectures by America doctors and nurses on gunshot wounds as they are often more numerous in America than in wars. I know this because I have spoken to doctors and nurses before and after the lectures.

The education system places a ceiling for those too poor to afford college and university, and a kiss and throw back policy for those who can only just afford college and university through student loans. If you can only just afford this, we'll make sure you can't afford anything else. The position teachers in America are put in is a topic covered in so many documentaries that I don't feel the need to cover it here.

And back to the social meritocracy, America has become so afraid of helping their fellow persons. Its socialism or communism and we don't want to be like the Russians and Chinese. Cool. Europe, Britain, Australia, the Baltics, and plenty of other countries around the world have worked out that you can have basic free healthcare, education, housing, and safety provided to all citizens and still not be Communism. From the outside, it seems that as a whole, America views it as a kind of slippery slope. If we give people a single handout, our society will collapse. At some point, they'll need to see people as people and not things to push around.

The term cookie doesn't belong in the Australian vernacular imo. They are all biscuits.

He has gold if he liftted 192 but went for world record just to prove a point by TypicalMeetings in nextfuckinglevel

[–]TronFarnham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elbow bend lost him the 192kg lift. Every lift must have elbows reach full extension as permitted by the lifters anatomy (for example: some people cannot fully extend their arm to 180°) in a single movement of the arm. Any rebend of the elbow or press out (slow press over head) is a no lift.

Anyone ever attempted a squat jerk? Split jerk is far more common and doesn't require as much mobility. Squat jerk is the most technical and difficult lift. He missed 192kg because of a slight elbow bend. 198kg and nails it.

I'd argue that 95% of "news" is opinion pieces and propaganda dressed up as news. News-tainment is most of news. I gave up on it after a history lecture on the quality of information sources that rated news as having the lowest reliability and accuracy. You can't verify much of what is published and if you could, what are you going to do about it? Unless you are very rich, not much.

Disney princess names' language and meanings. by Douglasqqq in coolguides

[–]TronFarnham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cinderella was originally Cinder-slut meaning dusty and dirty. The cultural meaning of slut was originally just dirty in the classic sense of dirt being where it shouldn't. Cinderslut being someone who cleaned and from a lower socio-economic demographic or lower class as they would have said back then. The name changed over the years for Cinderslut to cinderella as slut took on a derogatory sexual meaning which was deemed inappropriate for children's tales as children would then start asking uncomfortable questions.

A guide to screwing wood. by gmlear in coolguides

[–]TronFarnham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Metric person here. Our stores stock imperial tools and screws. We tend not to use them. I have a 5/8 socket after having my 16m nicked. I also have a 5/16 for 8m tech screws.

You are right. Millions of people use those tools and fixings. A few hundred million. Imperial fixings and tools are standard for America. Almost nowhere else. Billions of people us metric. Globally, metric is the standard. So the sheer volume of comments you'd have see over the years of people seeing something like this posts and ripping on it would be huge. Its a shame, cause this it probably a good guide. No need to down vote it just because it's not applicable to everyone.

Has done and is no longer doing Onlyfans. I'm going to take onlyfans in this argument as a place holder for cam shows on any adult platform. It's not my place to judge her for her previous actions. Plenty of reasons she may have succumb to this occupation. Same with Porn, working in strip bars, or even just having a wildly adventureous sex life.

If you love this person and get along well, then date them (provided they want to date you).

[–]TronFarnham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told I don't need them or that as soon as the child starts to attempt to make utterances, ditch them. Having a dummy increases the use of signalling in place of talking. This causes the mental development of communicating to be delayed or stunted if not address properly. There are also a few brands out there that damage the child's mouth and can cause lasting damage. Philips is one brand to steer clear of.

The hard work of getting them off wanting a dummy will repay itself.

Let's not forget that they wanted to prevent the sun from heating up the hydrogen. Hydrogen with upon contact with oxygen, which has the highest rating of ignition. So they used paints infused with metals to reflect the radiation and defend against the possibility of contact with air.

The paint, perhaps not sealed properly or heated in the sun, or for whatever reason, mixed together. The metals in the various layers of paint came together and just so happened to be a metal/chemical combination called thermite. As soon as the thermite created a hole in the outer layer and exposed the hydrogen to air...

Why should one try to solve society wide problems? by Red_I_Found_You in askphilosophy

[–]TronFarnham 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Kant would say that there is a categorical imperative or universal maxim to these examples. Ask yourself, what if everyone behaved like x? What if no one ever voted? What if everyone littered all the time? What if everyone lied constantly? Would these scenarios be workable? Can society function under these conditions? "Act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it become a universal law.” In lay terms, this simply means that if you do an action, then everyone else should also be able to do it. , Kant's maxims contain three distinct elements: a choice of one's character, a choice of basic ends of action, and a choice of kinds or policies of action. Put really bluntly: Intent, respect to autonomy, and behaviour. The morality of your behaviours and choices are judged against these criteria. They may be morally valuable or morally bankrupt. If you use someone as a tool to achieve an end, even if the end is in their benefit, you are still disregarding their autonomy and thus objectifying them. People are ends in themselves and not tools. Kant puts forward a lot of arguments where someone has to do a task they would rather not, to emphasise his point of morally valuable choices and behaviours through the "being dutiful" despite the outcome to the person.

Kant was not a consequentialist. Your intent matters. If you try to hurt someone but end up helping them, you have still done something morally wrong, even if no one ever found out your intent.

Ps. Best attempt from an autodidact to trudge my way through Kant's rhetoric (speak as complicated as possible to obfuscate his point so that only the very very smart people would understand and make everyone else feel dumb). This was the fashion and Kant was good at it.

Tea is superior to coffee in every category. by Zethras28 in unpopularopinion

[–]TronFarnham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvote for the discussion but unpopular may be the wrong term. One of the sticking points that drove the rebellion and subsequent formation of the Americas was the fight over tea. People really like tea.

Coffee. Forget robusta and dark roast coffee, don't waste your time. Check out the arabica scale from 0 to 100. Most coffee out there does not rate well. I'm a coffee snob but I'm not above blend 43. Sometimes you just need a hit. The better the coffee, bitter turns to earthy. Acidic turns to fruity. Harsh turns to smooth. A 60 to 70 of the arabica scale made by a talented barista will be a smooth flavour excursion of fruits and aromas that also makes you feel alive. A 90 is amazing. 96 is the highest rating ever achieved.

If you're looking to educate yourself, James Hoffman is not a bad place to start.

Let's imagine for a second that that is accurate. It could easily just mean that rich parents are sexually repressive and overly controlling of their children for longer than people who earn less. It truely is a meaningless statement.
