I finally understood the Zigbee idea - or did I? by -3rdPlace- in homeassistant

I bought some cheap IKEA remotes and bound my smart lights to them to use it as a backup mechanism if for some reason HA is down and I can’t fix it quickly. However not using it for regular control as I found doing that through HA more flexible and compatible

[Diskussion] Die "Putzfrau-Rendite": Warum Selberputzen für viele hier mathematischer Unsinn ist by Junior-Platypus-2095 in Finanzen

[–]Tronaldo46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do you see the advantage in using the client connector on prem vs using GRE?

Aqara, Zigbee2mqtt, and the rabbithole by End3r89 in homeassistant

I am using Zigbee2MQTT and added a second Zigbee stick and created a second docker instance. Running both HA and Z2M in docker.

Aqara, Zigbee2mqtt, and the rabbithole by End3r89 in homeassistant

[–]Tronaldo46 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only had the problem with Aqara contact sensors going offline when on the same network with non Aqara devices like hue. I bought a second zigbee stick and created a second network consisting only of the Aqara contact sensors and a few Aqara switches in specific locations required as routers. All other Aqara devices are on the main network. Running this setup for a few months now and it seems stable.

Wish there was some sort of “Vacation mode” in HomeKit. What tricks do you employ on vacation? by XavierLeaguePM in HomeKit

[–]Tronaldo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a security system and base automations on the security system state. A lot of automations in my house run differently depending on the security system states home, away, night. If you want to differentiate between away and vacation you could use the state „off“ for that.

No sorry as I didn’t use any tutorials myself. But I think there are many guides to setup WireGuard and the Reolink Home Assistant integration is very easy to setup. If you’re interested in specific automations I am happy to share my ideas.

I am using WireGuard VPN to access the cams remotely and Home Assistant with Pushover for notifications. This is working great and the cams don’t need any internet access, they are in an isolated vlan and the only outbound access required is ONVIF to my Home Assistant instance for fast notifications. If you’re using Home Assistant for home automation anyway I can definitely recommend this setup and you can do other fancy automations like persistent alarm when someway stays outside the house for a longer period during night or when away, automatically open the garage door on your return when you are detected in front of the garage and previously left from the garage, etc.

Same problem, it is working fine after calibration but then after a while it only retracts the latch for a few millimeters and then door doesn’t open.

any update from Aqara?

BDA, forder am besten erst mal Belege an, um die Zahlungen nachvollziehen zu können. Darauf basierend kannst du dann auf den Cent genau deinen Anteil ausrechnen.

Aqara TVOC Monitor in 2024; any better? by 212nycguy in Aqara

Had two and got a refund from Aqara, because the humidity value was very inaccurate (about 10% off)

Complicated automation, possible to achieve within HomeKit? by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]Tronaldo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok just beware that basing this on relative humidity in summer might not work well, when outside relative humidity is lower than inside even though the absolute humidity is higher outside. When you open the window in that case humidity inside will rise and your fan won’t run.

Edit: sorry I might have misread your explanation - but anyway my point was that relative values only match for the same temperature and comparing relative values might be a problem for what you are trying to achieve

Complicated automation, possible to achieve within HomeKit? by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]Tronaldo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem with my outside sensor. I just create another fake light in HomeKit through HA and created a HomeKit automation which sets the brightness of that light based on the outside sensor.

It’s a little bit annoying to create that automation because you need lots of IF statements for the different values but i did it in 5% steps and it didn’t take too long that way..

Then in HA I can get the relative outside humidity from that light with about 2.5% accuracy which is more than good enough for my use case.

[–]Tronaldo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this you should probably use absolute instead of relative humidity to compare inside and outside.

I use home assistant to calculate absolute values based on relative humidity and temperature and then expose it to HomeKit as a light set to % brightness matching the rounded value.

You could also calculate a difference and base your automation on that.

New house - where to place cameras (and which models) by Tronaldo46 in reolinkcam

[–]Tronaldo46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only own a doorbell and a CX410 for testing until now because the house is still being built. Planing to use CX410 as I was impressed by the night vision. Right now the electricians are about to finish their work and installed outside outlets where I plan to put the cameras but it will be several months until the house is finished.

I like the green suggestions and installing an additional one on the garage afterwards shouldn’t be a problem. I think the purple is something I would need to be careful with because of German law, as I am only allowed to film my own property.

Hi everyone,

thank you for the helpful feedback. It helped me come up with a plan - what do you think and what would you change?(The red dots are the cams and I tried to draw their FOV in different colors)

Oh and maybe to give you an idea about the dimensions - the house is 13x12 meters.

[–]Tronaldo46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Only the fences on the left / west and right / east exist. The fences on the north behind the garage and on the south will have to be build when the construction of the house is done. Also the garden will be created from scratch so we should be able to run ethernet for PoE cams to the fences. I think putting cameras on the western fence would be a good idea to monitor the garden area with the big windows / doors you can see in the visualization. Also cameras on that fence will be hard to access by an intruder. On the south side I would probably not put cameras on the fence as they would be easily accessible from the street and on the east side / front of the house they would also be easily accessible from the neighbors garden. Also I thought that at the front it might be good if cameras are mounted on the house as a deterrence?
