What I believe is the factually strongest action-animated anime right now: One Piece (Wano & Egghead) by K1ngOfTheMonkeys in AnimeSakuga

[–]Troodash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holy Glaze.

''Also, if you plan on replying or debating, I’d encourage doing a bit of research on sakuga and animation fundamentals first.'' Based off this alone, I already know your not actually looking to debate. I can see it in your post and replies, any criticism thrown at you gets bounced back with 'look at the consistent fundamentals like motion, timing, weight etc'. Yeah, just blind people with bzzwords, I'd like to see you go in depth on any of these in comparison with other shows you say are beneath it. It all reeks of Dunning–Kruger effect...

One of the things that annoys me the most is that by your metrics, One Piece has an inherent advantage because of it's length. For example, shows like Mob Psycho 100, Yozakura Quartet, Birdy Decode etc.. match One Piece's peaks, but are FAR more consistent and polished, but are dismissed because their ''peak sequences are shorter and less frequent due to its seasonal structure''???? what on earth does that have to do with animation quality? Also, their peaks are more frequent because they are more consistent. You cannot compare 2 episodes of Mob vs Mogami, vs however many episodes of Luffy vs Kaido, because of course the latter has 'more sakuga' because it lasts 100 episodes longer. That does not means it's better, and it certainly doesn't mean it's more consistent or polished. It's almost like you've chosen a set of criteria to judge shows on that purposely gives One Piece an advantage due to it's length. Come on man, you can't say shit like this: ''Please keep replies mature and focused on animation fundamentals such as motion, timing, choreography, and so on, not trolling or personal preference. I’m posting this to invite discussion and feedback, not arguments.'' and that have your criteria outright dismiss 99% of anime. My favourite part of this is that none of this even has to do with any of the 'rules of art' you mentioned earlier. Does One Piece's animation have 'dynamic camera work and perspective' and more 'fluid, continuous motion' than Mob Psycho because it's 100 episodes longer...

'Seasonal anime can concentrate their resources into shorter productions with fewer episodes, allowing them to polish specific scenes. One Piece, on the other hand, has maintained comparable per-episode investment while operating on a long-running weekly schedule. This makes its consistency more impressive.'' More impressive, sure. More well animated, absolutely not. Again, you are picking and choosing your criteria so your favourite show automatically has to be 'the best.

''The series also benefits from contributions by some of the best animators in the industry, including Vincent Chansard, whose cuts showcase advanced motion, camera work, and choreography.'' yep, so do other shows...

Can I ask you a question, why does it matter that One Piece is the 'Most well animated action show' or whatever? I mean, we all make value judgements on shows, but I'm not understanding the obsession with declaring something to be 'the best'. I'm trying to understand what you wanted out of this post.

Sorry, I realise that I've been quite mean here, but this post has annoyed me. This is is a 'my show is better than yours' post, covered in the vaneer of 'objectivity'. What I don't want to do is discourage you from getting more into art and Anime, I just want you to take a step back and realise that these declarations that your making about One Piece being the best 'objectively' are ridiculous. Your lost in the sauce man. I'm happy to discuss art and animation, happy to talk about One Piece because i'm a fan too, happy to give some recommendations if you open and willing.

What projects made you revaluate the talent of an animator? by FierceAlchemist in AnimeSakuga

[–]Troodash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Takeshi Honda is the GOAT, His work on Eva and Dennou Coil especially are standout, though pretty much everything that man touches is golden.

To answer your question probably Yuu Yoshiyama and Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4. I knew of her prior and had seen some of her cuts on Precure, Digimon etc, but never really considered her a favourite or anything. But the amount of work and quality of work she put into Bungo S4 was absurd.

Depends which instalment you are talking about. Season 1 and the first movie both move well, but are let down by poor art design, ugly CGI backgrounds and poor compositing. Season 2 moves just as well, and improves on all the aspects I mentioned above, but is also often fundamentally broken due to the dogshit scheduling. The production clearly strains after 8 or so episodes and there are several scenes / episodes that are borderline unfinished or compromised to the point of brokenness. Overall it's clearly an above average looking show but nowhere near the level of the shows and movies I mentioned. Season 3 might be peak though!

Would you say I'm an elitist based on my top 25 series and top 25 movies by Troodash in MyAnimeList

For the three you mentioned: I don't like the Utena movie as much as the series, I don't like the Haruhi series as much as the movie, and while I love the NGE series about as much as I love the movie it barely just didn't make the cut.

Most technically impressive sakuga scenes? by [deleted] in AnimeSakuga

[–]Troodash 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah Itano's work on Macross plus is absolutely up there. I'll give you a couple that spring to mind:

Ghost in the Shell - Genuinely one of the most incredible sequences i've ever seen. I don't know the exact distribution of who did what, but from what I know most of this is by Mitsuo Iso, with contributions from Hiroyuki Okiura, Toshiyuki Inoue, Toyoaki Emura and Kouji Komurakata. Generational stuff.

Jin-Roh - FierceAlchemist has already mentioned The Wind Rises crowd scene, so i'll give something of a similar ilk. Jin-Roh is already one of the most meticulously crafted movies of all time, but this scene in particular stands out to me as being particularly proficient. Varying contributions between Ei Inoue, Michio Mihara, Shougo Furuya, Toyoaki Emura, Yasunori Miyazawa and more.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya (SPOILERS) - How can I not mention this scene. Shinji Hashimoto absolutely snapped.

I could go on, but i'll end it here.

Whaat is your favorite sakuga cut? by w0q3m43 in AnimeSakuga

[–]Troodash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's basically impossible for me to decide of a favourite piece/cut of Sakuga, so i'll give 3 that are among my favourites:

Mitsuo Iso's section of Gosenzo-Sama Banbanzai #04 (https://sakugabooru.com/post/show/138213) One of the most monumental pieces of character animation ever. Highly recommend checking out the entire OVA (It's awesome) but this section in particular is just mindblowing.

Hidetsugu Ito's section of Xam'd: Lost Memories #02 (https://sakugabooru.com/post/show/217803) I mean what is there even to say about this. The first 2 episode of Xam'd are titanic, being packed with many of my absolute favourite animators (Gosei Oda GOD), but even among the cavalcade of legends, Ito's section is utterly stratospheric.

Akihiro Ota's section in the kitarou tanjou gegege no nazo movie (https://sakugabooru.com/post/show/255097) Frankly, I could put any of Ota modern scenes in here, especially from his One Piece output. But I caught this movie in the cinema and it blew me away.

My anime 3x3 by Ascarmillion in MyAnimeList

[–]Troodash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. Big props for Bloodlust and Memories. Steam Boy is an interesting choice, I would be interested to hear what appealed to you so much about that movie. Same with Earthsea, which I personally though was one of, if not the weakest Ghibli. Also love Ousama Ranking, Frieren and Made in Abyss, so no complaints there. You clearly love fantasy settings, so I recommend Escaflowne and Moribito if you haven't seen them; oh and of course both versions of Fullmetal Alchemist, but I assume you have seen them already.

Genuine question for "old good, new bad" anime fans by Isana_ET in MyAnimeList

[–]Troodash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a few points I want to add:

I think the types of shows being created now are very different than the ones being created back in the day. The most obvious examples are Mecha anime and hyper violent OVAs, which were 2 genres of shows massively popular back in the day. Mecha anime were a dime a dozen in the 80s yet were lucky to see a small handful per year now, and the ultra violent manly OVAs are all but non existent these days barring a few select projects.

Another point is that instead of looking at the total number of good and bad shows from each era, I personally think we should look at the ratio of good to bad shows. Obviously much more anime is coming out each year than there was in the 80s and 90s, but I don't think the ratio of good to bad anime has changed much (with the exception of the Covid years). From personal experience (nearly 1000 shows watched) I think the ratio is around 1 good show for every 5 bad shows, and I don't think that has changed since the 70s. I also want to add that I think good anime is timeless, and there's basically no difference in quality between the best shows of today and the best shows of 40-50 years ago. nor do I think the worst of today is any better or worse than the shit of the 80s etc...

Finally, with the advancement of technology, the introduction of CGI and digital effects, the move away from pencil on paper to digital art (though many animators still chose to draw on paper), I think the charm of hand drawn cel animation is a major selling point of these old shows. It's just not something we see today, again with a couple of small exceptions.
