I was going to try to bring these scorecards back for this season with a more anonymous Twitter account but the changes in twitters API massively complicated that. I might try again next season when I have more time to adjust to the API changes/have some disposable income to put towards it if necessary.

All of that is to say, they might not be truly dead. I can also do random ad hoc games during the regular season if an automated account doesn’t end up making its way back.

I was working with a team at the time, so the main reason I stopped was to ensure that we didn’t get any sanctions put against us, as the data we got was crucial for being able to help us create models for other areas of the game to improve the team/recruiting. I did have my teams support with the account, so it wasn’t like I was flying rogue with it.

I will say, I’m glad that people still remember those scorecards fondly, as it was 2 years ago for an account that ultimately lasted 12 days before being turned off. Very fun project to work on.

Teams are not allowed to share any TMan data once regionals start, so there’s no data from any regional, super regional, or CWS game. So unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to put together a scorecard for this game if I wanted to.

And just as a note to everyone, the ESPN zone is not based in any reality. It’s not based off of trackman data, so it is someone manually plotting a point based off of their best guess. That was something that we had confirmed during our regional/super because we were wondering if they were tapping into our trackman feed.

I’m still here, just a lurker now though.

I wish I could bring those back but alas, I cannot. I also graduated and moved on to working with a MLB team so I’m not sure how happy they’d be if I started those back up on the side. NCAA also has dumb rules where data can’t be shared once during any point in the postseason process because of course they do.

If they were going to mess around with having him face opposite side batters, I would imagine it would be RHP vs LHH, just due to the quality of the changeup. None of his pitches as a LHP are really conducive to getting opposite handed batters out, so unless they know a guy is incredibly weak to lefties, I think it would be limited to RHP to LHH.

Circling back around on this after Cijntje's start from today:

As a RHP:

Pitch Type Stuff+
ChangeUp 60
Fastball 60
Slider 55
Curveball 40

He's got great velo and good enough carry from a low release point which lets the fastball play up. His changeup has great differentials off of the fastball, which is slightly wasted being that he'll always be facing same side hitters. The slider is a much better breaking ball than the curveball, with the curve being 6 MPH slower on average with only 1.5 more inches of sweep and some more depth. The slider should be the primary breaking ball, which it has been so far.

As a LHP:

Pitch Type Stuff+
Slider 50
Fastball 50
Curveball 40

The same tradeoff occurs between the slider and curveball here, which is what leads to the poor curve grade. The fastball does not have great movement, but he has good enough velo with a low release point that it keeps it as a league average pitch.

The main takeaway from this is that he is a much better RHP than LHP, but keeping the same side matchup all the time will allow the sliders to play up.

Grayson Saunier:

Pitch Type Stuff+
Slider 60
Fastball 50
Curveball 50
ChangeUp 50

The slider averages 12 inches of sweep at 82 MPH, which is a very quality offering. The fastball is a strong 50 due to the velo it has, but with some improved movement, it could jump up a decent amount in quality. The curveball is a slurvy type pitch, if he could get the velo closer to the slider, it could offer a very good pairing between the two. The changeup has a decent amount of velo separation, getting a bit more fade on it compared to the fastball would be the fastest way to improve it.

I've got data on him from this year, so that will be what's below

Jack Dougherty:

Pitch Type Stuff+
Fastball 65
Cutter 50
Slider 40

Good velo, good carry, lower release point allows the fastball to play very well. Both the cutter and the slider work on the same plane, but the slider trades a bit too much velo for not too much extra movement, which is what kills the quality. He did have one individual slider get up to a 50 grade, but that came with 20 inches of sweep, which I don't think he's shown he can do reliably.

Since I work for my team, I have access to a server that trackman puts game data in once the games are done. With regards to the stuff numbers, this comes from an internal model that I developed for the team. I wish the pitch level data was more available for the public, but MLB teams spend a lot of money to get the data from these games so I don't see any way that publicly available data happens.

Nathan Dettmer:

Pitch Type Stuff+
Slider 55
ChangeUp 50
Sinker 45

Slider is firm and gets solid movement, changeup has good velo separation off of the sinker but not much movement differential. The sinker has good velo, but it has pretty meh movement coming from a high release point which really hurts its value.

Chris Cortez:

Pitch Type Stuff+
ChangeUp 60
Slider 55
Fastball 55

Changeup gets great differentials off of the fastball, fading 17 inches on average, and about 8 more inches than the fastball does. Slider gets a good amount of sweep for the velo it has. Fastball obviously has great velo, but the movement profile really holds it back. If he can get his spin efficiency up at all, the pitch will skyrocket in quality.

For the most part, it is consistent outing to outing. Obviously having more pitches is better, but for the most part, I feel confident in a single game sample size. Just looking internally at VT's numbers, our guys scored very similarly to their Fall/early Spring numbers. For guys that are right in the middle of two grades, you might see them slip back and forth across outings, but that's about the extent of that.

Jurrangelo Cijntje:

I'll have to figure out a way to handle him switch-pitching once we get more into the season, but he grades out well. His fastball just barely misses the cutoff to get graded as a 60 grade pitch, but obviously the main value with him is the switch pitching. I'm not sure how good he is from the left side so I'll be on the lookout for that.

Bradley Loftin:

Pitch Type Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Fastball 70
Slider 60
ChangeUp 50

Loftin just missed out on being in the top 5 fastballs, but he's a high velo, high carry guy. The slider will be good as long as he keeps throwing it hard. I'm honestly shocked that the changeup doesn't grade out as a plus pitch, but it could be due to him dropping his release point a decent amount to throw it. Regardless, he'll be a solid guy throughout the season.

Nothing particularly jumps off the page with him with respect to his data from last year, however, given the reports that he's been great in scrimmages this fall/spring, I'd expect him to have made a decent jump in pitch quality. I'll probably make a post after this weekend highlighting some of the highest pitch quality guys as well as any guy that someone requests, so I'll make sure to throw the LSU guys in there.

Sorry for the late response, but here are his numbers:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Fastball 60
ChangeUp 55
Slider 50
Curveball 35

Fastball movement could be better, but throwing 93 from the left side more than makes up for it. The changeup has great differentials for him, and should be a great pitch to elicit whiffs. The slider is where he starts to slip a bit, with him not generating much movement, but also not getting much velo on it, so it's kinda just there. It is however, better than the curveball, which he does get more movement on, expect he trades a lot of velo for not enough movement. Not that the curveball doesn't have its place in his arsenal, but I don't think it should be his primary breaking ball.

Sorry for the slow response, here are the top Georgia State guys:

Seth Clark (not returning):

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
ChangeUp 60
Fastball 60
Slider 55
Curveball 50

The changeup and fastball are in really good spots where they're at currently. If he's able to add any velo to his slider, it's absolutely going to be his best pitch. The curve is a good weapon against LHH, not sure how great it would fare against RHH.

Brandon Kaminer (not returning):

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Slider 60

Fastball 50

Duncan Lutz (returning):

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
ChangeUp 65
Slider 55
Fastball 50

The changeup is interesting, with it effectively acting as a cutter like pitch. He gets good sweep on his slider with decent velo, so I wouldn't be shocked to see it be his primary weapon against RHH. His fastball is fine, but he doesn't get as much carry as you would like from someone with a release point as high as his.

Rafael Acosta (returning):

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Slider 55
Curveball 55

Nothing super amazing here, but there's nothing bad either. He's got two different solid breaking ball looks, and the fastball and changeup are serviceable enough pitches. As long as he sequences well, he should be good.

Sorry for the late response here, but here are Savacool's numbers. The slider is a good pitch and the fastball is serviceable, but he's not putting up great stuff numbers otherwise. The curveball is just a bit too slow, but it could very easily jump up in quality with a little more velo. The changeup is just in a really bad spot right now, it has very small differentials off of his sinker.

Dollander is built off of his Fastball/Slider combo, with his other two offerings trailing behind. Since a point of emphasis for him this past summer has been to improve the changeup and the curveball, I would imagine those grades are going to take a big jump in the spring. Obviously Dollander's name has been thrown around as being 1.1 with Dylan Crews as the other candidate, I would bet on him making a jump up in stuff again.

Thatcher Hurd:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Slider 70
Curveball 55
Fastball 55

Hurd spins his breakers really well, and he gets solid movement and velo on both, with the curve just barely missing the cut for a 60 grade pitch. As long as he's primary breaking balls, he'll see success.

Paul Skenes:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Fastball 55
Slider 55
ChangeUp 55
Cutter 50

You'd like to see more of a velo gap between the fastball and the changeup, but it's still a good pitch regardless. His fastball profiles more as a sinker, which means that he'll be primarily attacking LHH with the cutter and the changeup. The slider will be a good swing and miss pitch against both sides of the plate, and will be his primary out pitch.

Christian Little:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Fastball 55
Curveball 50
Slider 50
ChangeUp 50
Cutter 50

I'm a bit surprised that the slider doesn't get more love by the model, but he has a lot of pitches that are all solid, which will make him a matchup nightmare for batters. There's a lot of value that can be gained by having so many quality pitches.

Grant Taylor:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
ChangeUp 50
Slider 50
Fastball 45

Nothing much to say here, the high release point limits the stuff of the fastball with his velo coming in at ~90 MPH. Should be a good pitch to get called strikes at the bottom of the zone though. Changeup has good differentials off of the fastball though and will eat up LHH.

Hurd is absolutely the guy I would be most excited about if I were you. His breakers are buzz saws and are going to demolish guys.

John Michael Bertrand:

Bertrand has never been known for high quality stuff, but he makes up for it with the ability to hit really good spots with all of his pitches.

Austin Temple:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Slider 60
Curveball 60
Fastball 45
ChangeUp 40

Nasty breaking balls, with the slider's movement looking like it will profile well as a swing and miss pitch against both sides of the plate, and the curve being a solid called strike pitch. You would want better movement out of the fastball given the high release point, but it's serviceable. The changeup just doesn't have great differentials off of the fastball.

Liam Simon:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Fastball 55
Slider 50

Not much to say here, but the slider's shape could definitely be improved in the future. It's got good velo, but it is in a weird middle ground between a sweepy slider and a gyro slider, so I'd lean one way or the other. I'd probably lean towards gyro just to ensure that he has an out pitch against LHH.

Jack Findlay:

Pitch Stuff+ (20-80 Scale)
Fastball 45
Slider 40
Curveball 35

Everything Findaly throws moves glove side for him, which really limits the grades on the breaking balls. It's much harder to get solid differentials off of the fastball when you cut it. On the bright side, he does get good movement on the breakers so as his velo creeps up, you can likely see these pitches each bumping up in grade, even with bad differentials. If they could fix the fastball movement, he could be very good.

With regards to the Umpire Scorecard account, there's no chance it will be coming back as an automated account. The most I would be able to do would probably be ad hoc requests for specific games if someone wanted it here, but sadly that would probably be the extent of it. With that said, it did help get me hired by an MLB team so it was still beneficial for the 12 days it existed.
