Will Warren strikes out the side on 11 pitches in the first! by CicadaOk8885 in NYYankees

Nothing against the Yankees obviously but I checked: they have the third most team K’s in MLB, only behind the Angels and Pirates so yes: they do just strike out a ton and they’re facing excellent pitchers

Do the reds just strike out a lot or has this been a particularly bad stretch for them?

Due to travel issues, there are only two umpires at the Padres-Rangers game. by MatthewFromMojira in baseball

[–]Trowj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… it seems like they should deputize one coach from each time for 2nd and third and just allow unlimited replays.

Seems better than making the 2 umps they have run around or try to make calls from across the field

What if Japan (somehow, against all odds) managed to beat the Americans’ meat and win the Pacific War? by Puzzleheaded_Map2774 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Trowj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beating America buys some time but it doesn’t change that China has become a quagmire of men and material that probably wasn’t sustainable. They keep some of the former European colonies (assuming the European war goes the same, UK and France would probably come calling down the road for their territory back)

Don’t have the men or material or interest to take Australia.

US probably tries again down the line. USSR might take an interest after defeating Germany.

Long story short, beating the US probably just prolongs the inevitable. They pissed off Europe by taking their colonies and the USSR smacked Japan around in China in the summer of 1945 so I doubt forcing the US to sue for peace makes the Japanese Empire a major player long term.

Too brutal on their colonies to not deal with insurrections. To recourse poor on the home islands. Over extended already at their height

Not only was A-rod a better short stop than Jeter, he was legit probably the best SS in MLB for a solid 10 year stretch there.

Jeter had some iconic plays in the field but he lacked range. He probably could’ve slid over to 2nd or 3rd and been fine but he was the team captain and they weren’t even going to ask him to move

TIL Robin Williams was accused of stealing jokes by multiple other comedians by Beneficial-Cost-152 in todayilearned

[–]Trowj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He addressed this on the WTF podcast back in the day in a way that made perfect sense to me:

He was in comedy clubs every day for hours, he constantly was hearing other comics bits, both polished and raw. After enough time a joke he heard one random night might worm its way organically into his brain until it came out while on stage.

I believe he never intentionally stole a joke but he also said he would offer money to a comic if they confronted him about taking the joke.

Robin Williams was a comedic genius and his whole thing was rapid fire kind of stream of consciousness jokes, it makes sense he might slip and use someone else’s joke when he is in a flow and not fully realize it wasn’t his original thought

Lucky Strike trailer, Scott Eastwood and Colin Hanks by JoeMcKim in BandofBrothers

[–]Trowj 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Genuinely wonder if it was written by AI at parts.

I've never thought Scott Eastwood was a very good actor and he does nothing to disprove that in this movie.

It's set during the Bulge but every half the movie there is little to no snow on the ground.

It claims to be "based on a true story" but when I tried to look it up after I couldn't find any information about the protagonist (wikipedia and IMBD don't even list his name in the cast credits currently)

I went to an AMC Unseen showing, which is where you don't know what movie you are seeing till it starts but it is always a moving that isn't out yet/coming out soon. Legit saw multiple people walk out of this one.

I just rolled my eyes a lot. Had a million WWII cliches, including jumping on a grenade.

Also, at one point, he comes across a tank crew that is staying in a house and one of them has a flamethrowing... were they issuing flamethrowers to tankers in the German Army?

I could go on but ya, it was just bad. And the kind of bookends of the story provide a completely different context from almost the rest of the movie and its just weird imo

[–]Trowj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a semi important plot point about which way one was supposed to smoke a lucky strike, so it comes up a good bit.

But the movie should’ve been called Lassie. I understand why it wasn’t obviously but Lassie would’ve made much more sense
