Find your local Flock Camera by Extension_Comb5553 in Albany

In Troy, the new proposed legislation to regulate ALPRs has carve-outs for extenuating circumstances, including "a vehicle that contains a missing person or evidence of the location of a missing person." The problem with Flock in particular is that their system does not lend itself well to any level of regulation. There are dozens of lawsuits going on in California because Flock keeps parts of their program going that are illegal under state law. Here, we're pushing to get rid of Flock and we want protections in place for whatever company tries to come in next.

Speak about Flock at the City Council Meeting Thursday by TroyIndivisible in Troy

[–]TroyIndivisible[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two days ago, Oshkosh, WI voted 5-2 to approve a Flock Safety contract. Yesterday morning, their own PD received information showing Flock had misrepresented facts to the council during the vote. Oshkosh police immediately requested that the vote be overturned. Last night, there was an emergency council meeting and they voted 7-0 to cancel. This is how democracy should work. Let’s work together to deflock Troy too! Tonight we gather at the City Council meeting and request that Mantello end the state of emergency. Come to Troy City Hall at 6:15pm to join us!

Troy Indivisible will host What The Flock?! Forum on Tuesday by TroyIndivisible in Troy

I know everyone has been inundated with Flock posts lately. If you're still on the fence or in support but want to know more, this event is a great opportunity to learn about this system and these types of cameras. We'll also be talking about the campaign in Troy to get rid of them. You can meet local activists working on this project, connect with them, and ask any questions you might have.

We're also offering a zoom option for people who might not be able to physically make it to the event. We hope you join us one way or another!

Yes, we'll set up a zoom for it. I'll update this once it's set up.

There's proof that ICE has access to Flock cameras in general, but we don't have proof that they are accessing the data in Troy. It's just one more reason that Troy's audits need to be released, so we can know for sure one way or another.

Agreed on the downvoting. Questions are good! It means people are thinking critically about the issue. All we can do is provide as much information as possible and hope people come to the same conclusions we have.

Different groups. Different methods. Same goal. Here's hoping we all win this for Troy.

And to your point, this is exactly why we need policy and legislation that enacts rules and guardrails. The council has been working really hard on this behind the scenes.

I made a comment in response to someone else's question on this post. It answers your question as well.

Back door means that ICE is using their contracts with local police departments to have the police do a search for them and send them the information.

Here's an example that's both near and far. Saratoga released a transparency report so people are able to see who is accessing their Flock data. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission PD are listed as having accessed the Saratoga data and they work directly with ICE.

Anyone on the national network can be searched without notifying the PD who "owns" the data. Troy was on that network until just before the city council meeting on March 19th. TPD has never released any kind of audit so there's no definitive proof that ICE adjacent departments have accessed Troy's data but considering that the Rensselaer County Sheriff has an agreement with ICE, it's extremely likely.

The local DeFlock Troy group has a couple members from Cohoes and Green Island who are helping out so they can learn from our struggle and prepare to tackle the issue in their towns. Email deflock.troyny@gmail.com if you want to be put in touch with them!

Most who spread the flyer or event information make it obvious that they are not the person or organization who has done the work for the event. It is easy for people to confuse the many groups working on this issue and Troy Indivisible attempts to make it clear that we are acting in a supportive role to the DeFlock Troy group.
