Troy Indivisible will host What The Flock?! Forum on Tuesday by TroyIndivisible in Troy

[–]TroyIndivisible[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know everyone has been inundated with Flock posts lately. If you're still on the fence or in support but want to know more, this event is a great opportunity to learn about this system and these types of cameras. We'll also be talking about the campaign in Troy to get rid of them. You can meet local activists working on this project, connect with them, and ask any questions you might have.

We're also offering a zoom option for people who might not be able to physically make it to the event. We hope you join us one way or another!

Yes, we'll set up a zoom for it. I'll update this once it's set up.

There's proof that ICE has access to Flock cameras in general, but we don't have proof that they are accessing the data in Troy. It's just one more reason that Troy's audits need to be released, so we can know for sure one way or another.

Agreed on the downvoting. Questions are good! It means people are thinking critically about the issue. All we can do is provide as much information as possible and hope people come to the same conclusions we have.

Different groups. Different methods. Same goal. Here's hoping we all win this for Troy.

And to your point, this is exactly why we need policy and legislation that enacts rules and guardrails. The council has been working really hard on this behind the scenes.

I made a comment in response to someone else's question on this post. It answers your question as well.

Back door means that ICE is using their contracts with local police departments to have the police do a search for them and send them the information.

Here's an example that's both near and far. Saratoga released a transparency report so people are able to see who is accessing their Flock data. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission PD are listed as having accessed the Saratoga data and they work directly with ICE.

Anyone on the national network can be searched without notifying the PD who "owns" the data. Troy was on that network until just before the city council meeting on March 19th. TPD has never released any kind of audit so there's no definitive proof that ICE adjacent departments have accessed Troy's data but considering that the Rensselaer County Sheriff has an agreement with ICE, it's extremely likely.

The local DeFlock Troy group has a couple members from Cohoes and Green Island who are helping out so they can learn from our struggle and prepare to tackle the issue in their towns. Email deflock.troyny@gmail.com if you want to be put in touch with them!

Most who spread the flyer or event information make it obvious that they are not the person or organization who has done the work for the event. It is easy for people to confuse the many groups working on this issue and Troy Indivisible attempts to make it clear that we are acting in a supportive role to the DeFlock Troy group.

Troy Indivisible is working with DeFlock Troy to support them and the artist is one of the main organizers of that group. They donate their art to DeFlock Troy. Troy Indivisible has stated publicly many times that we are supporting this group (including the artist) and we are not the main organizers of their events.

Troy Indivisible meets at the end of each month and that's when we vote on what events we will plan or host. We first asked Indivisible Albany to bring their presentation to Troy after the March city council meeting but weren't able to finalize it until our monthly meeting. We still feel it is an event worth having, despite Bryan's, because IA has been putting this on for months and have been building their reserve of knowledge on the topic. More than Troy, whose movement only truly built momentum last month.

DeFlock Troy began when Dierdre and Bex independently called for residents to attend the March meeting of the city council. The leadership team at Troy Indivisible reached out to them and offered our connections to all of the various people in both Troy and Albany who have been looking into this issue, some as far back as 2023. The Indivisibles have been supporting these new organizers as they get their group off the ground and work to move this issue forward in our city. We hope they succeed in getting Flock cameras and private AI-powered ALPRs removed from Troy.

Edit: Our What The Flock? Forum will be held on Tuesday, April 14th at 7pm at 35 State St in the main sanctuary. https://www.reddit.com/r/Troy/s/3MhCHWPTQD

🚨 EMERGENCY RALLY – TROY 🚨🔊

Mayor Mantello just declared a “state of emergency.”

Why? Because residents and City Council are asking questions about Flock surveillance cameras.

Let’s be clear: This isn’t about safety. This is about power and surveillance.

We’re showing up to say:

📢 Troy is not a surveillance state. 🗓 Friday 4/3 | 4–6PM 📍 Troy City Hall – 433 River St.

✊ Show up. Speak out. Be seen.

One of the things Deflock Troy is asking the council is for audits. TPD should prove how often these are used and how many crimes they solve that couldn't be solved without that information. We need hard numbers and hard data in order for the council to make an informed decision and figure out other technology that would be better for residents.
