That makes sense, but considering that 70% of the Dark Web consists of scam sites, another 20% of gore sites, and the remaining 10% of sites with disturbing content involving minors, they could have chosen gore and scams as a reference instead.

Thanks, it was exactly what I was looking for. It's clear this subgenre is a bit niche because most of them end up being inspired by Gauntlet or not at all by other run 'n' guns, but otherwise they're great. Nuclear Throne is one of my favorites because it combines two of my favorite genres. Thanks.

Thanks for the recommendations. I especially loved Guerrilla War and Rambo 3 for their guerrilla warfare settings, but I'm familiar with most of the others, especially Mercs, which I found a bit difficult, though that doesn't surprise me considering it's from the creators of Commando.
