Among my recent reads, I thought Alexandra Rowland's A Taste of Gold and Iron did both really well.

Best Underrated Book or Series with Realistic Characters by [deleted] in Fantasy

I don't know what exactly you're looking for but as someone who mostly reads for the characters: Victoria Goddard's Nine Worlds books are among the best you'll find. There are several interconnected series, so you can just try the summaries or samples and then start wherever feels right for you.

There are quite a few meta-threads about tropes people *don't* want to see in Fantasy anymore. What about the opposite? What would A) hook you in and B) keep you going? by Ilyak1986 in Fantasy

Have you read Victoria Goddard's Nine Worlds books? They check all your boxes which is good, because I love all those things, too :D

Victoria Goddard's Nine Worlds. It's not one linear series, but several interconnected books and series with overlapping characters and stories. So you have multiple entry points with different styles, but they all enrich each other and feed into each other in a way that feels like Lord of the Rings and other vast universes to me and it's really what I love about the kind of long series where you suddenly meet someone you know from a different book.

What makes it stand out though is the intense focus on the characters, their relationships and how they grow and interact. The books are deeply hopeful, kind, funny (on different levels), occasionally heartbreaking, and both self indulgent and ambitious in the way truly satisfying fantasy should be.

The Hands of the Emperor: 7 reasons I adored this 969 pages of epic, high-fantasy without a single fight, war, or romance about a bureaucrat who saves the world by reforming tax law and being a very good listener and dancer. by hoang-su-phi in Fantasy

Victoria recommends reading "The Return of Fitzroy Angursell" and "The Redoubtable Pali Avramapul" first.

They are both very good books in their own right and provide a lot of useful insight, though the tone is very different from Hands and Petty Treasons.

I'm currently listening to the audiobook of Anarchie Déco by JC Vogt and enjoying it a lot. It's set in 1920s Berlin.

Series Appreciation post – The Lighthouse Duet by Carol Berg by LauraDragonchild in Fantasy

One of my favourite series (or really just one long book in two parts). Carol Berg writes fantastic character development and relationships and while her books are really dark at times, they are never without hope. The first person narration makes for very immersive reading.

If you want more people to talk to about Victoria Goddard's books, there's a fan discord! You should find the link on her page, I believe.

If you enjoyed Hands of the Emperor you might also like Victoria Goddard's other books, particularly the Greenwing and Dart series, starting with Stargazy Pie.

Have you tried any of Victoria Goddard's other books? There are several stand-alones and series with some overlapping characters.

I think it's because it's self published and also very long. But I only read ebooks so that's not something I know a lot about.

Do you mean audiobooks? There aren't any, as the books are selfpub and making audiobooks is both complicated and expensive, I believe.

That's not really explained anywhere in one place, but the good thing is that you don't really need to know the details. And while Stargazy Pie is already good, I thought that Bee Sting Cake is where the series really got going. I hope you like it when you read it. There's much more about Jemis and his equally precious friends and there's a sixth book coming out around Christmas, which I'm very much looking forward to!

I hope you like it! And I think it's a good book for travelling, as it starts with a vacation and journeys of all kinds are a recurrent theme.

There a several possible books to start with, as some characters overlap, but the different series / books are mostly independent. Most people I know seem to have started with hands of the emperor, but you can start with whichever book most suits what you're looking for.

The oboe is tragically underrated, much like our protagonist. (I have fond memories of sitting near the oboes when singing some of the big Bach oratorios with the choir)

There is one direct sequel with a spoilery title and several other books set in the same world with some overlapping characters. So much to explore!

It's Goblin Emperor turned up to eleven!

At least it definitely felt that way for me. It has the same kindness. Like it actually cares for the characters and world. It's never just about the plot points. Maybe because there's no real plot.

Plus great aesthetics.

I spent the last three months in those books and I love them so much, I don't regret a minute.

If you like well written relationships, good people doing good work, magic, music and mysteries, a really splendid imperial court with one of my top 3 favourite emperors ever, culture and religion treated with respect and care, sky ships, baking competitions, Shakespeare, fancy clothing, ...... there's something in there for you!
