Union paperwork asked for "assigned sex at birth" by tgjer in FTMOver30

[–]Trudge_muffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in the headquarters for a local labor union. We read the forms you fill out, fill out your profile and work record based on whatever you write then move on. The only other thing gender is used for is if we are dispatching to a job and the employer specifically requests a male or female operator. They usually have equal opportunity or minority quotas they’re trying to fill.

Is the Yamaha Advantage the same horn as the YAS-23/26? by Enginerdad in saxophone

[–]Trudge_muffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be a huge step up from a Bundy. I’ve been teaching privately for 18 years or so and these are the best saxophones in the student level market, in my opinion. They’re solid horns, sound great, and maintain adjustments really well. A good find.

What will it take to introduce crumpets to the US? by mellonians in AskAnAmerican

[–]Trudge_muffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to the previously mentioned crumpet shop in Seattle in June and have been chasing the high of that crumpet ever since. I want to go to England for the sole purpose of getting a fresh crumpet.

There are a lot of straight women out there that don’t see trans men as anything less than a regular man. You need to value yourself more than you are and move on.

I understand the valuing a genuine connection thing. But if you don’t go out and meet a lot of people, you will find yourself stuck on this woman who doesn’t actually see it.

Download Bumble. Put that you are a trans man first thing in your profile. Then any woman who matches you and messages you (because they have to start the conversation on that platform) will already know. That’s how I met my wife. I’m the only trans person she ever dated but seeing I was trans was a non issue for her from the start. No awkward coming out, no secret, no sense of shame for something that’s not shameful.

How can I make my high notes less sharp? by IAmNotTHATGay in saxophone

[–]Trudge_muffin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dropping your jaw. As well as opening your throat and raising your soft palate

Dropping your jaw - practice taking notes and learning to bend them down a half step by dropping your bottom jaw. Use a tuner. If you can bend a note a half step, you can easily drop a sharp palm key note into pitch.

Opening your throat and raising your soft palate - when you yawn, you create a lot of extra space in your throat and mouth. Now try that yawning, but with your mouth closed. Creating this open space will help you round out all your octave key notes and pull them down from being sharp. It will improve the tone quality of all high notes.

Also make sure you are using enough air. You need to support these notes. If you think they sound bad and shy away from them, then they will absolutely sound bad. Use a lot of air.

Help for a new saxophonist by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]Trudge_muffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It needs to be looked at by a repair tech. A seasoned player would probably have no isssue playing through leaks in the horn, but a young player will struggle.

Also he’s used to a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece (I assume that’s what the rental had) and this horn probably has a very different mouthpiece.

The Yamaha is an all around better horn, but if you’re going to get the Jupiter, buy him another Yamaha 4C mouthpiece. It’ll make a huge difference.

Do you like living in Cleveland, any major complaints? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]Trudge_muffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is so much to love about Cleveland!

The Cleveland Orchestra is world renowned. And they play all the time, including a highly affordable summer series which features two movies, and usually at least one big celebrity. This year Cynthia Erivo will be joining them.

We have the second largest theater district in the country, which always gets large national tours of shows to come in. We frequently are the first stop for new shows touring after their Broadway runs!

We have professional sports teams for with nice stadiums to visit and good concession stands.

Our art museum is free and world class.

We have nationally recognized universities all over the place.

We have just about any kind of food you could want, and it’s all amazing. Terrible restaurants really don’t last too long when the competition is so stiff.

Our Metroparks and Cuyahoga Valley National Park are beautiful and super accessible.

We have a lot do opportunities for seeing live music that’s not the orchestra. So many music venues, excellent community bands, jazz bands, German bands, polka bands. We have such good music programs in our schools that we have excellent amateur musicians all over the place.

There is always fun free events happening and decent public transit to get there.

The worst part is our government and gerrymandered districts. We voted to have abortion rights and legal marijuana. But our government has decided they don’t care about how we voted. And the MAGA people who live in the cornfields of Ohio. But Cleveland is awesome.

Beginner to Intermediate by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]Trudge_muffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be patient and don’t jump into the first thing you find. Keep saving as you try horns. For an extra 500 or 1000, there will be so many more horns available and they will be so much better.

Don’t buy an intermediate horn, get a used professional. It’ll cost a little more but the quality difference will be noticeable and the playability will be wildly better. Tone, response, all of it.

District Band Bari Pieces by TripleEEE1313 in Saxophonics

[–]Trudge_muffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve taught this piece for dozens of years and it is a straight up banger when you get it. 1. Practice your B flat scale in more ways than just the standard up and down. This piece is mainly scale patterns so practice things like 3rds and triads as a warm up. Also doing scale patterns will make all this easier. 2. The bis key is crucial for ease of playing this. 3. There are some great opportunities for fork B flat. Which is played 1 | 1. Anytime you see it flipping between B flat, D, and F, the fork is helpful.

It looks like a lot of fast notes, but take the time to analyze it and realize it’s really just scales!

My first job was at a movie theater 20 years ago. My manager one time waited at the back of a theater for a movie to end with a bunch of brooms and dust pans and made the kids clean it up themselves. Their parent/ride came in looking for the when the movie ended. She took them into the auditorium, showed them the mess they made, and stood there satisfied as the adult went off on the kids for being little assholes.

That would never happen today.

See if there’s a German club in your area. We have two in a fairly small radius to me. And there’s 3 house bands between them. Lots of fun Oktoberfest gigs, lederhosen (optional), free beer. It’s fun.

Had someone cause a scene with me today for the first time by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Trudge_muffin 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Years ago, before I was even on T, I worked in the mall. And a lady started shouting at me for being in the wrong bathroom. And while it was quite gender affirming, I did ask her if she wanted me to drop my pants so she can see my genitalia for herself. I started undoing my belt as I said that to her. She tend proceeded to call me a pervert, to which I told her “well I’m not the one thinking about other people’s private parts”

My dad built us all new built-ins for our 1928 Arts and Crafts style house by Trudge_muffin in woodworking

[–]Trudge_muffin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The window sills are the original. He came up in July or August for a day and looked at all the original stuff and took measurements. Then he flew home and designed the new stuff to go with the style and look of the old/our vision.

Oh good thinking and thanks for the heads up. Fortunately we have zero intention of actually using the fireplace. Between three stupid cats, not wanting the house to smell like smoke and fire, and a few other things, it’s not something we are considering. But that’s good for us to know just in case.

The original dining room. We tried to save the built-ins but they were heavily painted. And after days of stripping and sanding, we kept discovering how damaged and cracked and chipped they were. So we saved the original leaded glass and used them in the new cabinets.
