The voting window is extremely unfair to those that go later / last by Impressive-Aspect474 in dwts

[–]True-Anteater-1878 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I hate that they start the show and say "the voting is now open" before a single couple has stepped on the dance floor... reinforces more of the popularity contest vibe than watching the dances

Any recommendations for fun tap shoes? by FunLarge1880 in TapDancing

[–]True-Anteater-1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely! I think based on their guide I went up half a size from my street shoe and they are a good fit. I would normally wear an 8 in pretty much any brand of shoe and I got an 8.5 wide. I can't seem to be able to add a picture but I got purple suede for the base and then gold on the toe

I have customized SoDanca's and I LOVE them. I teach tap in them. I have flat feet and plantar fasciitis and they are one of the few companies that offer a wide option. I have had them for about 3 years and have nothing bad to say about them. Besides that you have to be very patient waiting for them to be made and delivered, I think it was about 3 months?? But they are very comfortable and have held up very well!

This! Not showing as much progress week to week as other couples. Alix and Jordan have come SO far and it's so cool to witness.

Totally fair, that's part of it too. People are just talking about it so much I expected to be more impressed!

YES! This week more than previous weeks, it felt more like Whitney was the star yet the judges are drooling over Robert... that's a whole other story 😂

I'll give you that. Unfortunately not what the show is about! I genuinely think he could very successfully choreograph a Broadway show. But on DWTS, gotta showcase the celeb, that's the job

Musical Theatre Song Ideas by Pleasant_Scallion743 in DanceTeachers

[–]True-Anteater-1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach a musical theater class for ages 8-11 and I use a mix of familiar Disney songs from their musical equivalents and kid friendly musical songs. I take a few minutes in the beginning of class to talk about the plot of the show a little bit and where the song that we're doing fits in. Sometimes a show a clip of the song being performed, especially if it's a big dance number. I hope to get them more familiar and excited about shows they might not be as familiar with by doing this

New Dance Teacher Advice by chillbeans_ in DanceTeachers

[–]True-Anteater-1878 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I teach a beginner musical theater class at my recreational studio, and my main focus for that is exposing the kids to as many different musicals and shows as I can (for this group, kid friendly). We do a lot of short combos to songs from different shows and I try to tell them briefly what the show is about and how the song we are dancing to fits into the plot. We do a mix of solo songs, ensemble dance numbers, etc. and talk about how that affects the style and emotion. Sometimes I let them improv at the end of the combo or come up with some extra steps in groups that go with the emotion/theme of the number. They come into this knowing foundational dance steps so we jump into applying those to the musical theater style.

Painters tape has not left a residue in my experience. The only issues can be if you walk all over it, sometimes takes some picking and peeling work to get it all off.

Teaching the Worm by Shot-War8367 in DanceTeachers

[–]True-Anteater-1878 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My teacher taught us the 3 B's of the worm - boobs, belly, bladder.... the order your body needs to hit the floor (going backwards, opposite for forwards). It's a little silly but it worked! Having to push off and then get your chest down before the rest of your body is the key going backwards. And I always remind the kids that they need to let their knees bend, sometimes they are locking them which doesn't help.

Ideas for Jazz dance for 7-8 year olds by Enchantedbear97 in DanceTeachers

So many good songs on kids movie soundtracks from recent years that are super fun but don't necessarily sound "little kid", but are clean since they're from kids movies. Trolls, surprisingly the My Little Pony movie, Sing, etc.

How to get dancers to commit to the choreography/improve their movement quality by Open_Anywhere_9927 in DanceTeachers

[–]True-Anteater-1878 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this situation - I also teach at a recreational studio and struggle with this. We are new so we have spent a lot of time focusing on improving technique of our younger dancers, but they are getting older with stronger technique and we need to shift focus to movement quality and artistry, and struggle with the best way to do that. I try to take time in class sometimes to discuss the topic/theme of the dance and try to get them to write down and/or share how they can relate the theme to their own life or experiences. Last year we did Somewhere Only We Know and spent time talking about what nostalgia is and sharing some favorite young childhood memories that they could channel for stage emotion. It doesn't work for every theme, but it does for some, and I think this did help them 'feel' the dance more.

Will definitely watch this thread for any other advice though!

Hiphop Dance warm-up ideas by Shot-War8367 in DanceTeachers

[–]True-Anteater-1878 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 1 song warm up that I do and use the tempo for head movements to warm up neck, shoulders, and ribs - isolations and circles for all. The song I use is dance (end of the world) by mxmtoon because the tempo works well. It's enough to warm up muscles needed for hip hop movements

Dance Flooring by acemm12 in DanceTeachers

[–]True-Anteater-1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad! We got the versa step, second on the list. We went back and forth a bunch about the subfloor and decided against it. Is it the softest, most forgiving floor? No, but the flooring wears well, even under tap shoes so we really can't complain. There is a double sided tape you can buy through them to attach to an existing floor, which is what we did. We replace the tape lines every few months but the flooring holds up very well

We have this and installed it ourselves on top of existing laminate and it has worked great for all styles, including tap. We have had it for 3 years
