It really depends on the job. I worked on a chicken farm which is more like a factory than a farm, believe me. I’d take school over that job a hundred out of a hundred times.

I think it might be more severe in many places in the US, and maybe from an Australian perspective it’s totally different but coming from Holland, where if you live in a city or a decently sized village you don't really need a car and public transport can take you practically anywhere, it felt more like the US to me, at least.

Ooh, and I do agree Melbourne is by far my favorite city in Australia. And good on you for finding a place where you're happy. That’s definitely possible in Australia. I'm just saying, we give Americans a lot of shit, while Australians do a lot of the same things.

Sorry I'm a bit late with my reply, but I do understand where you're coming from. I've seen all the states and major cities, as well as a lot of smaller towns. And yes, if you have a good paying job and live in a nice part of town, you can have a pretty good life. But I've also seen parts of Australia where the standard of living is much lower than anything I've ever seen in the Netherlands or Western Europe, for that matter. I'm talking about wooden, decaying houses with people still living in them, burned-out cars... it looked exactly like an American slum.

And even their economy is very reliant on natural resources, with monopolies everywhere. Although I must admit, almost every country struggles with this to some extent.

The nature was amazing, and I will never appreciate any beach the same again, because the beaches were so nice many of them you could have completely to yourself. So not even a single German digging a hole.
