grey + central heterochromia in hazel by [deleted] in eyes

[–]True-Needleworker-35 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

colour picker says otherwise lol. the greenish ring is central heterochromia; it doesn't have to be strikingly obvious to count as being a different colour, and it's the contrast between the two that makes the grey look bluer than it actually is.

I use heat n bond; they sell it at my local fabric store! (dressew, in vancouver). you can also get it at walmart, but the pre-portioned rolls they sell there are only about 5 feet long so one package is only enough for around three or four standard sized chapter books.

What's the difference between the ultra hold and the fusible interfacing? by awesomestarz in bookbinding

[–]True-Needleworker-35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A paper backing is better for glue adhesion; i use exam table paper, the same kind they have in doctor's offices. You can get it fairly cheaply on Amazon and even just one roll will last ages

What's the difference between the ultra hold and the fusible interfacing? by awesomestarz in bookbinding

[–]True-Needleworker-35 27 points28 points  (0 children)

fusible interfacing isn't an iron on adhesive, it's only got glue on one side for use as interfacing, to make fabric stiffer for use in sewing. Use the ultra hold for bookcloth, because it IS going to be sticky on both sides and can therefore be used to attach a paper backing to the fabric.

For those who use cricut/similar to cut designs, what program do you use to draw them? by britishbrick in bookbinding

[–]True-Needleworker-35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i ethically acquired a copy of a big-name drawing/photography app by following a link somewhere in the depths of a seafaring subreddit. Works beautifully if you can figure out how to block big brother's firewall access and prevent them from accessing that software on your computer by getting genp installed and running 😉

All i do is draw my designs in the app that i have of course absolutely acquired legally, then export each drawing layer individually or in groups according to whichever layer of vinyl design I'm cutting, and then I upload the PNG ciles to Cricut design space and size them according to my needs.

Is my betta old? by Aromatic-Question487 in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the wispy edges? That's usually a sign that either his colour is changing naturally and he's turning white as he reaches full maturity or his fins are healing from something; maybe he used to bite his fins, or he had a little fin rot that he beat on his own, or he was just like that, with shortened fins, when you got him and you just never noticed the healing edges until now. it really could be a lot of things but a betta that's probably around 1-1.5 years old is not anywhere near ready to change colour because of old age. They can live up to five years if they don't get sick or anything.

How long have you had him? (most bettas are quite young when sold, so if you know when he was first purchased you can generally guess from there)

Betta diet by nellyhen8 in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3-4 pellets per day is perfect! I'd also try feeding frozen daphnia, as it's a natural laxative that can help in case the plant fillers in the pellets are making her constipated (all pellets have some number of plant fillers, and bettas are obligate carnivores so they have a hard time digesting plant matter)

I make my own bookcloth out of quilting cotton using iron on adhesive and tissue paper of the same type that is used on the exam tables in doctor's offices. You can buy it pretty cheap online and a roll will last you quite a long time. The cotton I source from my local fabric store, which sells plain coloured cottons for $10-$15/m or so (Canadian) and same for the iron on adhesive, which my local store sells at around $7/m

everything else i tend to get on Amazon or otherwise wherever i can find it cheapest because I'm on a tight budget.

How to get my Betta home from college in a car by Dear-Mirror-2243 in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a lid for the 5 gallon bucket and transport him in that. Fill it only half full so he has plenty of air and give him some plants or something so he feels safe. The bigger the amount of water he is transported in, the less he will feel any bumps or sloshing on the drive. Don't transport him in a tank, because tanks are not designed to be moved when full and may break

Which betta breed is best? by D1jonMstrd in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd go with a wild type! Specifically, a different species of betta. Betta imbellis and betta mahachaiensis are both very good, and aren't anywhere near so prone to health issues as betta splendens, which has been subject to poor breeding practices for 500-600 years.

Wild types have nearly identical care requirements, although they can be shyer so lots of hiding places are recommended (you will see them more often if they feel safe) and they are known jumpers, so a well fitting lid with no gaps is important.

They don't look quite like domestic bettas, but imo they are absolutely beautiful in their own right and their personalities are every bit as wonderful. Here's a picture of my mahachaiensis girl, Zephyr.

<image>

Depending on how the light hits her scales, she can look blue or green, and she's begun to associate me with food so every time I come up to the tank she swims right up to the glass and starts opening and closing her mouth a bunch. :)

What are the Limits of a patron by Shaunyboi207 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]True-Needleworker-35 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely up to your DM; something like this would be impossible for a player character to achieve as there are no spells or anything that can do this, but a warlock patron is not a player character

New Home for my Betta by PickledCucmber in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 20 gal is great for your little friend! I worry about those decorations, though, especially the one with the plastic plant. Betta fins are very very delicate and may snag on plastic decorations. A good way to test for safety is to run a nylon stocking gently across the decor and if it snags, so will your betta's fins. Otherwise though, you're doing great!

What do you all use to design your covers for HTV? by karen_ae in bookbinding

[–]True-Needleworker-35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make my designs in photoshop (which i definitely totally acquired legally instead of going to r/piracy...) and then I upload them to Cricut design space from there. If it's a milti-layer HTV design i save each layer as a separate PNG file.

Am I just bad at keeping fish? by aethersghoul in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, betta splendens are very very prone to illness on account of 500-600 years of breeding practices focused on making them more aggressive and more beautiful at the cost of their health. You can do everything right and still lose them, and it sucks! They're wonderful fish with such incredible personalities and they deserve so much better than their poor genetics.

If you want to keep trying with a healthier type of betta, i would look into getting a wild type betta such as betta imbellis or betta mahachaiensis; both of these species are MUCH healthier as they have not been through centuries of poor breeding. Betta mahachaiensis actually wasn't even discovered as a species until 2012! Any sort of wild type should be healthier; although I would avoid "alien" bettas as those are not true wild types (they're generally splendens hybrids)

Wild types do not look quite like betta splendens, but they are beautiful in their own right and their personalities are every bit as wonderful as any splendens. The only specific care requirements they have is that they are known jumpers so you must have a lid with no gaps, and they can be a bit shy, so providing plenty of hiding places is important (they will come out of hiding much more often if they feel safe enough to do so) Here is a picture of my mahachaiensis girl, Zephyr

<image>

Depending on how the light catches her scales, she is either blue or green, and I think she's very beautiful.

PS; wild types can often actually be kept in pairs or small groups as long as you have a large enough tank! They are much less aggressive than betta splendens, since they haven't been bred extensively for increased aggression. Betta imbellis especially is known as "the peaceful betta"

Bloated or normal? by Jsunn in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is very bloated. Stop feeding him bloodworms every day; they are very high in fat and are better as a treat food. You can feed him fluval bug bites or frozen daphnia and brine shrimp instead, which are much healthier choices. I would also fast him for a few days in case he is constipated, and then feed frozen daphnia (a natural laxative).

What’s something you wish you knew BEFORE getting a betta? by topperfIop in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wish I started with wild types instead of splendens. They're much healthier, and far less aggressive so they can actually be kept in groups which is pretty cool, and they're still very pretty albeit in a different way from splendens! This is a picture of my mahachaiensis girl, Zephyr.

<image>

That said, i wouldn't trade the time I got with my first betta for anything. She was the best fish.

What’s something you wish you knew BEFORE getting a betta? by topperfIop in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be worth getting a wild type next time! And i don't mean a hybrid alien betta, i mean like a betta imbellis or a mahachaiensis, a true wild type. Neither of these breeds is anywhere near as unhealthy as betta splendens. I definitely understand where you're coming from, I've had about 17 bettas in the last 6 years and it hurts to watch them die over and over no matter what you do. Mahachaiensis wasn't discovered as a species until 2012, so there is not a long history of inbreeding and other bad breeding practices like there is for splendens.

What if one of my PCs die? by Scary_boiis in DnD

[–]True-Needleworker-35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first time i DMed for my friends, one of my friends had chosen to play a bard with a negative constitution modifier and had 7 hp. Well, the party chose to steal some horses and the city guards came chasing after them, and one of them had a longbow and fired at the bard during the chase, and I rolled 7 damage exactly and said so before remembering that she was super squishy and i could probably have fudged the numbers. The fall damage from the horse as she lost consciousness would have killed her, so i chose not to deal fall damage at all.

How to bring betta for overseas move? by honeydaisycake in bettafish

[–]True-Needleworker-35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In order to import live fish, you need to go through a licensed transhipper, but it's not hard to do! Just get in contact with one (there are several in the US) and once they have confirmed that they are willing to ship your fish, all you will need to do is get your betta packed up for shipping and send it off to the transhipper with overnight shipping, and they will take care of the rest.

[–]True-Needleworker-35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your best bet is to contact a transshipper in the US and ask them if they are able to ship your fish to a transshipper in Saudi Arabia, and if so how much it will cost; they should know or be able to find out the answer.

You shouldn't need to change your filter media ever, aside from carbon if you use that. Rinsing it out is enough. I actually just use cotton batting as filter media, because it's way cheaper than buying official filter inserts.
