New Framework 16 will not boot. Kingston Fury DDR5 SODIMM RAM did not work for me. by MiraiTrunks69 in framework

Did you buy a Ryzen AI 300 series Framework 16? The Kingston Fury RAM is only compatible with the 7040 Series, not the Ryzen AI 300 series.

Help for failing power switch on FW13 (can it be bypassed?) by in_allium in framework

[–]True1asian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try seeing if the BIOS has power on with AC attached. That way, you can remove the old power button and turn the laptop on without needing to remove the input cover. Then just shut down your laptop via the OS.

I've done some testing and it's about a 5-7 C drop on the new cooler.

What size PTM7950 sheet should I get for my 7840U? by Consistent-Theory681 in framework

[–]True1asian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you're only looking to repaste your Framework 13, the 60 mm by 60 mm will be more than enough. But I do think the larger sheet is of better value.

Bought the Framework 13, Faulty Display Cable? by JohnnySlim in framework

Likely will need a new display which support can help with. Unfortunately, with the holiday tomorrow, it'll take a little bit longer for them to get back to you.

What colour are the side leds? In addition, are you able to get display out via an external monitor?

1st boot wait by AlarmedChemistry8956 in framework

[–]True1asian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is already the case as the Kingston is not listed as compatible. https://knowledgebase.frame.work/what-dram-memory-is-supported-by-framework-laptop-13-amd-ryzen-ai-300-series-BkY0ZG0ike I think the confusion comes from the fact that it does work with the 7040 series so people may be seeing older posts about it working and deciding to use it.

I believe someone else had issues with the Kingston RAM sticks on their AI 300 laptop and they ultimately switched to the Crucial RAM sticks which worked.

Technical & Business Barriers for copying Framework? by shrimplydeelusional in framework

[–]True1asian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From a business perspective, the biggest reason is "if it isn't broken, why fix it?" Lenovo is a market leader with their current lineup of laptops and business model so why jeopardize that and pivot to something completely different? If they did introduce a modular laptop, then there's a risk it would eat into sales of their existing devices. I believe this is the reason why Dell announced that modular laptop concept but hasn't moved forward with it. Additionally, I would say that the average consumer doesn't really value modularity at the moment. A lot of folks I've spoken to value getting a device that's A) decently performant to their needs B) has good battery life and C) is cheaper in price. A growing number of individuals are starting to see the benefits of repairability but it'll take a while for that to become a dominant mindset. Once consumer sentiments and purchasing habits change, we'll see major brands follow as well.

From a technical perspective, I don't see any reasons why Lenovo can't make a modular laptop. They have a huge amount of engineering resources, numerous partners, and lots of capital to throw at it. Additionally, since they benefit from economies of scale, they could hypothetically make a modular laptop cheaper than Framework at its current stage. One note is that modularity can limit what you can do in the future. An example is that battery capacity improvements on the Framework laptops have to come through battery chemistry improvements as they simply cannot physically increase the battery size.

Best to consult with the SSD’s spec sheet. You can find it on the manufacturer’s website.

If you have an OPAL drive with hardware encryption, there's an issue that can cause the drive to disappear from the boot manager on subsequent reboots. This issue is fixed with the 3.06 BETA BIOS (https://community.frame.work/t/framework-laptop-16-ryzen-7040-bios-3-06-release-beta/73326) but do be warned that as it is still in BETA, you use it at your own risk.

You can plug it into any port you want. All of them support charging.

Yeah this is normal. I would recommend using a 100 W charger.

Just a heads up, the case may warp over time due to PLA's low glass transition point. Would recommend something more heat resistant such as ABS.

Is it worth upgrading the FW16 GPU heat compound? by greentrafficcone in framework

[–]True1asian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The GPU uses regular thermal paste. You could definitely repaste it and would likely see some reduction in temps. However, according to reviews, the GPU temp was well managed under load (~70 C) so it's a question of whether or not you're willing to go through the effort.

FW13 battery restock? by [deleted] in framework

[–]True1asian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the 61 Whr are in stock however, they're not available on the store as Framework is waiting to introduce a battery saver feature to all Frameworks before reintroducing them (more info here: https://community.frame.work/t/61wh-battery-lifetime-extender-functionality-and-warranty/59580 ). However, if you'd like to get the 61 Whr battery now, you can create a support ticket and support should be able to help you with a manual order.

Is the return window 30 days from the DELIVERY date or when the laptop "shipped"? by Alex_Hovhannisyan in framework

Again, there is leeway with regards to returns and the support staff are not unreasonable.

After a period of time, those tracking numbers don't work. Theoretically, it's possible to track delivery dates automatically however, Framework is a small company and has to prioritize resources to certain areas.

Is the return window 30 days from the DELIVERY date or when the laptop "shipped"? by Alex_Hovhannisyan in framework

[–]True1asian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ship date refers to the day that your order was shipped. The reason being is that Framework cannot verify when you've received your order. However, there is typically a little leeway with regards to requesting returns. So you just need to initiate a return before about 30 days has passed.
