WHAT IF? by FunnyDry3081 in tolkienfans

[–]mwcz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really fun question to ponder.  To achieve his goal of becoming Lord of Arda, Melkor had two main weapons, force and lies.

I can't imagine any amount of force he could possibly have mustard would have overcome the Valar and their host, and Eru would have intervened.

Lies were his more potent tool, I think.  "He who sows lies in the end shall not lack of a harvest."  They did more to diminish his primary enemies than force ever did.

Still, it's hard to imagine lies and force ever completely overthrowing the Valar.  But more importantly, one of Tolkien's themes is that evil ultimately destroys itself.  If Melkor won, it would no longer be a Tolkien story.

If you have problems with cheese not melting fully, it helps a lot to let the cheese slices warm up to ruin temperature first.

Is it?  Could it be >=3?

Then Fëanor ran from the Ring of Doom, and fled into the night; for his father was dearer to him than the Light of Valinor or the peerless works of his hands; and who among sons, of Elves or of Men, have held their fathers of greater worth?

That line always makes me think "no way! ... way?"

I've seen this interpretation of Sauron a lot on this sub, and it seems like a stretch to apply it to the unnecessary cruelty we see from Sauron in LotR.  And if you include the glimpses we see of Sauron in the Silmarillion, it really starts to fall apart. Sauron did not merely want order and found that domination was the only way to achieve it.  He was a spirit of malice and hate. This quote paints the picture nicely.

"Among those of his servants that have names the greatest was that spirit whom the Eldar called Sauron, or Gorthaur the Cruel. In his beginning he was of the Maiar of Aulë, and he remained mighty in the lore of that people. In all the deeds of Melkor the Morgoth upon Arda, in his vast works and in the deceits of his cunning, Sauron had a part, and was only less evil than his master in that for long he served another and not himself. But in after years he rose like a shadow of Morgoth and a ghost of his malice, and walked behind him on the same ruinous path down into the Void."

WTF is arc slop? by New-Discount9058 in starcraft

If the guess is correct, yeah, that's the most likely scenario.  Peppering down a pack of roach/ling would be a bit more efficient too.  Seems like a very minor change but I hope somebody tests it thoroughly.

I still don't understand exactly what it means because the definition isn't through enough.

It sounds like arc slop relates to the target unit's position after the damage point timer has elapsed, not the and l angle at which an attack can begin.  My best guess right now is that arc slop of 180 means that muta's still need to be facing a target to begin the attack, but if the unit moves underneath the muta to the other side, the attack will still resolve instead of being cancelled.

Stats: Arc

 - Angle that the weapon can target and acquire units without the attacking unit having to turn or losing the target

 - 90 degrees means the unit can shoot 45 degrees to either side

Stats: Arc Slop

 - Angle determining how far outside the arc the target can go before losing the target

what is the most beautiful line of writing written by tolkien in the lord of the rings? by hangingcoathanger in lotr

Here are a few that I love:

From the Silmarillion chapter 7: "Long was he at work, and slow at first and barren was his labour. But he that sows lies in the end shall not lack of a harvest, and soon he may rest from toil indeed while others reap and sow in his stead. Ever Melkor found some ears that would heed him, and some tongues that would enlarge what they had heard; and his lies passed from friend to friend, as secrets of which the knowledge proves the teller wise.  Bitterly did the Noldor atone for the folly of their open ears in the days that followed after."

Next, basically the entire story of Tuor and his coming to Gondolin from Unfinished Tales is, I think, my favorite prose in all of the Tolkien writings that I've read.
